Well, you've read the notes, the notes had faeries and pipes, and now it is time for you to post until the faerie piping cows come home.

And the word of the day is: RAVELMENT!

Topic of the Day (the best in alphabetical order):
Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Royal Albert Hall Celebration
Hey, Mr. Producer
The 10th anniversary concert performance of Les Misérables (I have the 25th anniversary concert, but I haven't watched it yet)
Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall (a friend of mine said that the COMPLETE show was released on laserdisc...has anyone ever heard this or knows if it's true??)
Those are what I can think of right now. :)

I hope that's sooner than later.

Good morning, all! I got home last night around 7pm. and by 9 o'clock I was ready for bed. I got a lot of sleep last night, so I hope today's mixing session goes smoothly and speedily and we're finished ear;oer tpday. The difficult number is the opening of Act Three, which was recorded in segments over four days, three days last August and the choir boys in February 2012. Yesterday, we got through all of Acts One and Two, as well as everything in Act Three except for the Opening and Finale. After the Opening of Act Three, we have the Finale Ultimo and the six Appendix numbers to mix, listen to the whole thing and tweak or freeze.

This is a fridge/freezer saga for the history books. Someday, school children will be learning about it.
Refrigeration Vibes to Doug R!

TOD:
Evening Primrose
Follies in Concert
Company: Original Cast Album
Black and Blue
The Irving Berlin 100th birthday special
The Jule Styne 80th birthday special
What I've seen of the Ed Sullivan tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein

Recording vibes for Elmore.

My turn: Up way too early this morning. No particular reason, but I have things that must be done today, so might as well suck up the coffee and get on with them.

TOD
Best:
I remember thrilling to a Bernstein birthday special ca-1988.
Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall, perhaps. (I have the laserdisc, but don't recall how complete it is.)
I know I've missed a lot of great ones.
Worst:
Star Wars Holiday Special, anyone?
-
I missed DR John G's list above.
"Company: Original Cast Album", good lord, yes. Never saw it on TV, just had the VHS and DVD.
"West Side Story - The Making of the Recording"
"A Little Night Music" - PBS/NYCO

In honor of that worst status, here's Bea Arthur from that special. It's been posted here in the past. Didn't someone say Maury Yeston wrote the song?

About two weeks ago, I received an offer from Sears to renew the lapsed protection plan on my eight year old washing machine. The following weekend, the washer broke down.
Let's just say I've played a tricky game with Sears...

TOD:
Mary's Incredible Dream
The Anne Bancroft specials
The infamous Petula Clark/Harry Belefonte special
The Lily Tomlin specials
The Pee Wee Herman Christmas Special
Liza With A Z
Almost all of the Bob Hope, Jack Benny and Bing Crosby specials
I didn't appreciate them when they were originally shown (I don't really recall even watching them), but I loved the dvd that was released last year that showcased the TV specials of Mitzi Gaynor. Now those were TV Specials!
-
Last night I re-watched the first fifteen minutes of the Tony Awards and spotted another funny bit I missed Sunday night. I won't spoil it for anyone--all I'll say is to pay attention during the opening BOOK OF MORMON number when James Earl Jones opens his dressing room door...

Today I get to impersonate Ginny.
One of my "goals" for 2012 is to work in the library for 6 hours. Today is my first session. I will be in the Foundation Center Library (with a trained librarian) from 11 to 1 assisting the patrons as they come in to use our resources. I don't have a clue how it will go but I'm working with a nice woman and I will let her take the lead.

TOD:
Well, when I was growing up - TV specials were looked forward to with great anticipation......they always had a special BOX of information in the TV Guide giving a cast/song list. And most of them were in COLOR....especially on NBC, although CBS and ABC finally caught up.
Favorites:
Julie & Carol at Carnegie Hall
A Midsummer Night's Dream - probably on Kraft Music Hall, maybe not
Ann-Margret - I forget the exact title
A couple of Judy Garland specials....before she had her own show....and of course all of the Lucille Ball Specials!
Those that I didn't finish watching:
a couple of Frank Sinatra shows that weren't so hot....and Nancy Sinatra: Movin' On....which was not very much fun

I've never been one for television specials, but the one that I do remember aired back n the 1950s...and I don't believe it's available on home video.
I don't even recall the exact name of it (Ford?), but it featured a terrific duet with Ethel Merman and Mary Martin.

Hurray for DR DOUG R. Ice cubes for everyone!
And some gin to go with them.
-
With the few examples already posted, it's obvious there are more great specials than I'll ever remember I saw, not to mention those never seen or known about.
And thanks to DR Jrand61 for the memories of the TV Guide treatment of same. TV Guide was, itself, special.
-
TOD 2:
I'm sure to remember more as the day goes on, but I just dredged up a memory of several very funny Bette Midler specials, including one with Dustin Hoffman.
In the worst category, I'd put a Liberace special I once saw a little of. I was not a fan.

Worst:
Star Wars Holiday Special, anyone?
I've mentioned this before, but trivia points if you know who wrote the score.

Hmmm....might have to give the TOD some extra thought. I know I saw TV specials back in the early 70s, but at such a tender age I am not sure what they were, or who was in them....other than the Christmas specials.

Tuesday morning greetings! It's very humid here in SW Ohio today and our soon-to-be-replaced AC is not working. Richard called the HVAC guys and they said we'd be put at the top of the list...

DR Jrand61, have you watched DETECTIVE DUEL or FOUL PLAY yet? DETECTIVE DUEL stars the gal who was in COSMETIC SALES COMPETITION. FOUL PLAY is just darn fun...although I kept getting the Japanese baseball players mixed up.
-
They are next on my list DR MBARNUM. I just finished CLAUDELLE INGLISH and JUNGLE HEAT on Sunday.

Ooh, Claudelle Inglish was good! I enjoyed that one. Had never seen it before. One of these days I will get to Diane's interview and see what she said about that movie....one of these days....

Correction, the plumbing is still in tact but most of the dirt around it has been dug. Keith has dug out a ton of dirt so far and is still digging. He is definitely not happy.

I just had a thought. I hope there is enough water for him to take a shower after all that digging. Poor guy if not.

And I m home from the mixing session. The final mix is finished and ready to be mastered. The Act Three Opening took us two and a half hours, and we assembled it in seven sections: orchestra openng and piper, first half of the choir boys, second half, the big dance, Dinny's Serenade, Lady Maude's solo, and the chorus response and playout. Everything else went smoothly and finished quickly. Then we ran through both CDs, timing spacings between the humbers. I have some liner notes to work on, and then I will veg out.

I must say, I really don't want to go to this thing tonight, but I said yes and I guess I must. It's excerpts from two musicals - one is Inside Out, which of course I already know and have seen, and the other is a new musical version of - wait for it - Hazel. Since my friends are involved I'll just say I think this is an awful idea for a musical and so I'll be interested to see the point of it.

Umm...good luck. Hope it's at least sort of worth it.

If anyone's interested, the Kristin Chenoweth's duet with an audience member is on youtube:

I'm off, too. Tonight will be a Titus (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/254967) production meeting and then a TAO (http://www.olytheater.com/) board of directors' meeting.
Until later!

Zach's Language Arts teacher, who is incredibly cool, held a "coffee house" today where all the kids read their poetry. He started it out with this amazing video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk)

I ordered a CD yesterday from CD Baby and got this amusing email:
Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.
A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure it was in the best possible condition before mailing. Our world-renowned packing specialist lit a local artisan candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money can buy.
We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in our private CD Baby jet on this day, June 11, 2012.
We hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. In commemoration, we have placed your picture on our wall as "Customer of the Year." We're all exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Sigh...
We miss you already. We'll be right here at http://cdbaby.com/, patiently awaiting your return.

I'm pleased to say I was mistaken, only the outside water is turned off.
I hope some one returns Keith's call & can come out tomorrow to fix it. Without rain or irrigation the lawn & plants won't do very well.
I am just glad to know that you have inside water.
So am I!!!! :D Thank you.

OK. So, it's not "My Mother the Car." But, geez. Perhaps Debra Messing will be Hazel. That would certainly make it worthwhile.

Of course because I purchased a couple of books to read the book I have been expecting from the library finally became available. I think I will stop reading the very long book I just began & read the library book.

My keyboard sounds super loud these days. ;D

Hello, everyone.

My fridge/freezer saga drags on. The insurance company have agreed a replacement product and the suppliers will phone within 48 hours to let me know when delivery can be made.
Doug, you have a service contract on the fridge/freezer or is it a warranty? We usually have warranties. Whatever it is, sheesh! I'm glad you're finally getting a new one!
-
Hurray for DR DOUG R. Ice cubes for everyone!

TOD
I've never been one for television specials, but the one that I do remember aired back n the 1950s...and I don't believe it's available on home video.
I don't even recall the exact name of it (Ford?), but it featured a terrific duet with Ethel Merman and Mary Martin.
It was broadcast in 1953 and it was the Ford 50th Anniversary Television Show
Boy, DR Ben sure has a good memory!

Was this part of the inspiration for Dame Edna?

Finally worked out where my bathroom leak was coming from. The plumber has been round and fixed it within minutes. Another problem solved :)
After all you've been through with the fridge/freezer, I'm glad this one went well. You deserve it!

Prepare to hyperventilate, MBarnum Department:
A new film by Ross Patterson, 'FDR: American Badass,' starring Barry Bostwick and Kevin Sorbo, will be available on DVD and VOD this September 25, 2012 from Screen Media. 'FDR: American Badass' is a slapstick comedy that has the 32nd President of the United States riding a ‘wheelchair of death’ to stop the world from werewolves who carry the polio virus, including werewolf versions of Hitler, Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito.
Oh, my...this could either be very funny or absolutely horrible.
Sorta my thoughts, though I was leaning toward the absolutely horrible.

The word "twee" came to mind as I read that. Frightfully twee.

I just finished watching THE ARTIST on Blu-Ray.
Enjoyed it very much, though it probably could have been 10 minutes shorter.

Following a week-long recovery from having crammed in the trilogy, this evening was suddenly the perfect one for getting back into the Spaghetti, and so I have just watched ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Incredible stuff.

Back from the evening of excerpts - not well thought out - the authors of Inside Out opted to have a director at the theater put their excerpts together and that proved to be not such a good idea. The Hazel portion of the evening was very short - thirty-five minutes, four songs, and although I won't mention it in the notes, it's everything you'd think it would be - bad idea, bad execution and kind of pointless. The book writer knows how to write a funny line and there are a few, but the songs do nothing. My pal Jane Noseworthy was great as Mrs. B.

I only have a <ahem> pdf of the vocal score. It looks like it can just be sung by a soloist, unless you have that and need a different key.
