Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a symphony and noisy, and now it is time for you to post until the symphonic cows come home.

George, I really appreciated your comments regarding "1776".
I watched it with a group of friends the other night, and we had the exact same conversation.
Am with you 100%.

Listening to the new master again, when I should clearly be in bed.  Oh, well.  I love the first score and the way it's presented and sounds - that's a world premiere release.  The second score was previously available on CD (but long sold out) and I love it, but I was not that happy with that older CD, but that's what we've got to deal with - a bit dry for my taste, but there's nothing to be done with it.  I did take the six source music tracks that were in a row on the original release and move them to the bonus section - they were one reason that I never played the CD again after the first time - too much inconsequential stuff taking me away from the score - now the balance is much better.

We had a bit of excitement last night.

It's been very hot and last night it rained, finally. It seems to have cooled things off for the time being.

After the rain we heard some noise that didn't sound like rain. We went out to check and there was a BFR!!!

That's Big Frikkin' Racoon, in case you're trying to guess. He was calmly ambling about the back yard, most likely looking for dinner. Even though it's a developed suburb there are still lots of wildlife around. We have seen rabbits and bunnies in the past as well as either feral or just outdoor cats in the area as well.

No harm done by Rocky Racoon as far as we can tell, but his eyes just stared at us in the dark like "What are you doing in my territory?"

Yesterday I piddled and twiddled with a few CDs, finishing up some listening I'd been doing on my little road trip the other day, and then where did my hankerings take me but to HELLO DOLLY which I hadn't visited or even revisited in quite some time.  I went directly to a nice fresh listen to the 1994 revival which now takes on all new meaning after hearing and reading the story of its creation.  I appreciate the recording now more than ever, and a nice fresh thanks must go out to MR BK for the effort that must've nearly kilt him.

Now to backtrack to the original cast for a couple of things.  I so clearly remember wearing out that first LP back in the day.  That copy, may it rest in peace, is long gone.  Its replacement (still the original gatefold LP, early pressing, etc.) is in excellent shape, but what I listen to now, since I don't have it on CD, is the reel to reel tape which is a bit kinder than that Dynagroove LP.  (I only have about 100 tapes, but I love them dearly.)  Then, on to Mary Martin and Pearl Bailey, both also on RCA Dynagroove LP.  Haven't spun these in many years, so they need a good cleaning on the machine, and new sleeves.  They should be in fine shape, but we'll see.  I think Pearl was issued on CD, but not Mary.  Or is it the other way around?

I then piddled and twiddled with the DVD/BLU player, but the only thing I watched all the way through was

(wait for it)

LURE OF THE SWAMP, for which the thanks goes to DR MBarnum.  I was definitely in the mood for a swamp movie, and I guess it starts more promisingly than it delivers, but damn it all, I enjoyed it to the end.  This could almost be a double-feature companion to Jean Renoir's SWAMP WATER.  Not that I am equating Mr. Hubert Cornfield with M. Jean Renoir.  Actually I just wanted to type the name Cornfield.  But:  Swamp movies.  Possibly my new favorite genre.  Or sub-genre.  Or sub-sub-genre.

Finally, I piddled and twiddled (do you recognize a pattern here?) with COVER GIRL and THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES, just to check the discs and enjoy a quick eye-candy preview of the eye candy.  Both look simply magnificent.  The Technicolor of the former is lush and wonderful, and the TODD-AO clarity and expanse of the latter are just beautiful.  I believe I saw this only once with the family on its first release, and never revisited it on TV or home video.  This roadshow-ish film deserves an evening devoted to a proper straight-through viewing.  And it will get it, soon.

I was so excited to hear about Twilight Time coming along a year and a half ago, and I think I'm appreciating them more with every passing month.

DR Jane (and anyone else), my niece (6) has turned into a big time reader. She is reading the Nancy Drew teen crew books. Daisy Meadows Fairy series. Fancy Nancy chapter book.   It is so cute to watch. She just loves to read!

So far this summer she's been to her library 3 or 4 times. And mine twice (different selections of books). And this is only since she finished school on June 22nd.

Good morning, all! I slept late and I shortly have to deal with an ugly situation at my corner bodega about the fact that they, or their vendor, are not keeping milk in this heat at a low enough temperature. This is the third day that a half gallon of milk, with an expiration date of July, has been sour when I opened it.  I am not amused.

The dreams about recording DEAREST ENEMY are kicking in with a huge explosion. My only memory of my last dream this morning is a pianist bitching at me about rehearsing singers needlessly. Hmmm . . .

Today, very little to do, which I like. I will continue with BONES Season 6.  I'm getting attached to THE MENTALiST, so I may start watching Season 1 of that,

I have been reading the history of the Radford Studios near Chez BK.......of course it was the former home of Republic Pictures.

I am happy to hear the DR CHAS SMITH has now seen LURE OF THE SWAMP......and of course he recently viewed ROBOT MONSTER in 3-D.....so I think REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS will help him understand the literature of cinema in a new way as well....however the education will be incomplete until he sees RUNAWAY DAUGHTERS.

So they have BFR's (Big Frikkin' Racoons) up north and we have BHS (Big Honking Spiders) here in the south.  What a world!

I wish I could have gone to the Vix Family party.  My mouth was watering when I read about the steaks and the mushrooms.

Hope you are feeling better, DR TCB.

That's O possum to you, sir.  I happen to like them.  They're so ugly they are cute.  And they don't carry rabies like raccoons do.  I've been able to pet more than my share here around the house and had their little rat tail curl around my finger.  So sweet.

I've been watching the first two episodes of THE HOLLOW CROWN on BBC TV which is a brilliantly made new filmed series of Shakespeare's plays; Richard II, Henry IV parts I & 2 and Henry V. It's obviously an expensively made series which was largely funded by NBC. Much of Richard II was filmed on location at Pembroke Castle which I visited recently. I don't know when it will be shown in the US but it's worth looking out for.

Just heard the edited version of a cue for an upcoming title - this is perhaps our oldest title, from the mid-1940 and from acetates, ninety percent of which sound amazing - in fact, people will be bowled over by how amazing.  But there was one almost ten-minute track which had horrible pulsing and wow, which was really irritating to listen to and just took you out of the listening experience - really bad.  And a twenty-six second cue that was even worse.  I decided to delete the twenty-six second cue since it contains no music we haven't heard.  And then, I created an edit of the almost ten-minute track that skillfully removed all the problems - it meant losing a little over two minutes of music, but the edits are very clever and you would NEVER know there was anything missing.  Sometimes I'm good at this stuff - had to do it on a few other scores, but this one is seamless.  I'm thinking about including the full-length version of the cue, damage and all, as a bonus or maybe a free download on the site.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back from Lima, where the Killer Brownies were a big hit.  I was a hostess with the mostest, which took some doing because I'd only had about 3 hours of sleep last night and had been awake since 2am.  There was a vestry committee meeting after coffee hour, so I cleaned up the kitchen and then took a short nap in the recliner in the lobby.

I woke up about fifteen minutes ago.  I didn't get to bed until two, and I thought it was around nine or ten so I just stayed in bed.  Then I glanced at the time on my iPad and who knew - noon!  Guess I really needed to sleep and I did.  See what happens when the Tree Trimmers aren't there - glorious silence and glorious sleep.

Last Sunday and today, it sounds like someone is just revving their motorcycle...for hours!  Today, it's been going on since about 11:00 am (it finally just stopped) and last Sunday, it started at 8:30!!  I think it's actually trees getting cut down due to damage or illness, but still...8:30 in the freakin' morning?? :P is what I say.

And now, I must be off.  I must shower, get dressed and spend the day at my parents' house with my aunt.  I'm sure that we'll play cards or Scrabble or something and then we're going to Applebee's for dinner.  Sounds good to me. :D

Have a good day all!

And who said opossums can't have rabies? My understanding was the opposite. I've also been told that if animals that are normally nocturnal are out "in public" during the day, that they are likely to be rabid.

Has anybody here tried YONANAS?

It's basically frozen fruit that you put in the machine and it comes out the texture of soft ice cream.

I got one this week and LOVE IT.  It is amazing especially if you like ice cream but don't want to gain weight.  Plus if you don't do well with dairy.

I showed it to my niece today. We made so many different flavors to test. We had banana/blueberry, raspberry, blueberry, with a bit of banana (this was super good). Also banana and peaches. And banana/cherry/blueberry.

I was definitely in the mood for a swamp movie.

I don't believe those are words I have ever uttered. Or thought.

I have often thought, "I'm in the mood for a good film noir."

Last night it was, "I'm in the mood for a black-and-white movie."

Of course, there could be entire worlds out there, just waiting for me. Perhaps I have no idea what I'm missing.

Re: conversations from nearby tables:
I've been to some restaurants where the tables are extremely close together. Several years ago a friend took me to an expensive restaurant for my birthday. The food was good, but not great, but the real problem was the noise level in the restaurant. We were packed in like the proverbial sardines! There were four people at the table next to us, in animated conversation, and I truly felt like I was sitting in someone's lap. I know this is a highly rated--and did I mention expensive?--restaurant, but it ruined it for me. I would have preferred to have gone out for burritos and an actual conversation.

John G, do you hear many complaints about this?

Raccoons are far more likely to carry rabies then an Opossum.  I've seen plenty of them (opossums) both in the day and the night around here where I live.  They are always cute/ugly.  Love the babies--when they are scared they hiss.  I've never had one try to bite me.  They climb up on the dogs cage from time to time and that's when I'll pet their tail.  It wraps around my finger and is surprisingly warm.  Anyway, I like them. :)  I'd be far more scared of a Raccoon.  I would never try to pet one of them in the wild.

John G, do you hear many complaints about this?
Noise is probably the largest complaint that diners have about restaurants, and yet the restaurateurs claim that the noise creates an energy that is desirable and highly valued. If a place is too quiet, people are afraid to  talk or won't stay, so they say. It has long been a problem. The San Francisco Chronicle restaurant reviewers take a noise reader with them and record just how noisy places were and include the number with their review.  Someone complained about a high reader, so the critics went back (anonymously) and reported even higher noise levels than before.

I, too, agree with you about the sardine atmosphere, especially at restaurants with a long banquette and tables sort of scrunched together. The table has to be removed for someone to sit on the banquette, which always makes people feel fat, regardless of what size they are. Then, you feel as if you're in somebody's lap, as you put it, because of the conversations going on. At a seafood place in town, very expensive and quite wonderful, my friend and I had to listen to the woman at the table next to us complain about every last detail. She was furious because she swore the waitress didn't tell her about a special that I had ordered that, of course, was better than what she got (the waitress had). Then she tore apart every last aspect of the restaurant before turning on her husband. I had no clue who she was, but I hated the fact that her bitterness, caused by something beyond the purview of the restaurant (like a headache or a cheating spouse or something) affected my meal.

Drat, I don't get that channel.

You know the main thing I remember about David Cassidy was the time he got tricked by some reporter into telling I don't even remember what about himself.  It was in all the teen magazines of the time, Tigar Beat, etc.  Anyway, I didn't really care for him (I was an Osmond fan) but I felt so bad for him that I wrote and in my stupidity said if he was in trouble I was sure my Mom and Dad would let him stay with us.

I got to talk to him a couple of years ago when he was on a local radio station.  I wanted him to say "Hi" to a friend of mine who was a huge fan  but was to scared to call (and both of us grown women).  Heck, I'll talk to anyone.  I don't care who they are.  :)

Sad to hear about Mr Borgnine.....never liked him much until I saw him on The Hollywood Squares one week, and he was such a soft spoken gentleman and talked a bit about his Italian heritage....he was certainly a good actor to portray those heels and villains and low lifes....

Finished the third Maria Wern film and have just ordered the rest of them - one more box containing four more films.  The one I just watched was the best of them.

And banana/cherry/blueberry.

http://www.yonanas.com/

It looks interesting.  If I had young children I would consider getting it.

It can be nice for people with kids who don't like to eat fruit. But i totally wanted it for myself. I like treats, but want them to be healthier.  It is delicious.

Just finishing "Young Adult." Not a great movie, but Charlize Theron is better than the script.

Oh, my - apparently my nap in the recliner at church was just a teaser for my longer nap in my own recliner here at home.  Woke up about 7pm, had a bite to eat, and read both Sunday papers.

I just went online and purchased a wedding gift for my cousin's daughter.  Sometimes you look at a registry and nothing goes until close to the wedding.  I suspected I should have done this a month ago (the wedding isn't until August) and I was right.  I still found a coordinating 3 item option I like though it wasn't what I single item I was originally going to get.

We had dinner on the 4th with the future in-laws of Leslie Odom Jr, the actor who plays Sam on SMASH.  We should rent the show and watch it.

Bruce, the future mother in-law is Maureen Baum.  Larry was also there with his wife.  Ronnie was elsewhere.

I am getting so deaf I can barely hear what is being said at my table

Question: Do opossums carry rabies?

Answer: Any mammal can get rabies. However, the chance of rabies in an opossum is EXTREMELY RARE. This may have something to do with the opossum’s low body temperature (94-97º F) making it difficult for the virus to survive in an opossum’s body.

Bryan rescued a baby opossum and while he was out it escaped from his room & somehow was walking around the house.  Keith would not pick up the little hisser and made me do it ;D
I've had a couple babies over the years but they have to go when they get older.  They turn mean.

many teenagers are like that - but, gosh!; you really shouldn't have thrown them out of the house!

DR ChasSmith, glad you enjoyed the movie.

Now that you have a love for swamp films, you really need to see STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP and that Mexican western-horror film SWAMP OF THE LOST MONSTERS. Those should send you over the edge, swamp wise.

And now, I must be off.  I must shower, get dressed and spend the day at my parents' house with my aunt.  I'm sure that we'll play cards or Scrabble or something and then we're going to Applebee's for dinner.  Sounds good to me. :D

Have a good day all!

I just got home from the parents' house.  Dinner at Applebee's was delish (I had their Fiesta Lime Chicken).  We played Phase 10 and Scrabble...and I won both!!  I've only won Scrabble maybe one other time in my life and now I've won twice! :D

And as I was driving home, I saw some lights flash in the sky.  When I got home, I went up to my skylight and looked out and lightning was flashing!  It was so cool!  I didn't hear any thunder, but it's exceedingly rare to see lightning (or hear thunder) in this part of the state.  I wish I had a camera that could take nighttime pictures.  That would be cool.

Ernest Borgnine has died.

He was one of the nicest people in the business.

I was with him in Dallas this past May at Texas Frightmare Weeked.

He will be missed.

That's sad.  I think that he was one of my dad's favorite actors.  My dad certainly liked a lot of the movies that he was in.  But wow...he was 95 years old.
