Well, you've read the notes, the notes were about obsession, and now it is time for you to post until the obsessed cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: WHELM!
-
Hi
-
DD Ben and I have our own room now. It will take some getting used to
-
Tonight I saw the National Tour of Anything Goes. It was very good. Rachel York was great as was Fred Applegate (Moonface) an olf friend played Luke, one of the Asian men. I love the show and I still do. It didn't disappoint. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the lighting design. But whatever, I don't really have the credentials to comment on the lighting design. I know it wasn't my favorite thing about the show
-
It's really quiet in our room. I'm trying not to lose my cool about all this.
-
Good morning, all.
Need the chance to catch up with yesterday's posts.
But I had fun at the competition, then dinner with friends and finally a couple of hours of dancing.
Vibes for all in need.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Why am I underwhelmed by today's word?
-
Great photos, Ginny.
Ben, thanks for the post to Mia's Peter Pan. I may have to give it another watch.
-
Watching one of the biggest pieces of jaw-dropping pieces of WTF ever captured on celluloid, Al Jolson in blackface singing "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule."
Here's an excerpt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jIVuuNcg3w

Elmore, how was "I Capture the Castle"? I love that book.
-
Sunday morning greetings! Fr. Richard is on his way to Lima, but told them earlier in the week that I would not be there today.

That was something. But all I could think about that it must have taken a long time in makeup to get all the people in blackface, that there were a lot of yound children and that Al read a Hebrew newspaper.
-
You know, sometimes I wish I could make some of this stuff up. I got the move, "Wonder Bar," recently and the entire number, with the pickaninny introduction not included in the clip just adds to the whole experience. Even the preview for the movie, included on the disc, calls the number "startling" and refuses to show all but a second or two of it.
-
Good morning!
-
Watching the last half of The Awful Truth. Irene Dunne never fails to make me laugh.
-
Good morning, all.
Plans for today are being heavily influenced by the threat (or is it a promise?) of wintry mix tomorrow afternoon and evening. Have to get some errands and things done now, then stay in. It definitely screws with plans for being out tomorrow evening....naturally, the one evening all week I'd planned something.
-
I think this is the first I've ever heard about the Sims.
-
Sorry to hear the Cathy Rigby DVD is going to suck. Of course I'll watch it just to get the idea, but I know exactly whereof you speak and can already visualize the canned aspect of it, having suffered through other examples of same. I wonder why there have been so many instances of people having no idea how to capture the spirit of a Broadway show, sometimes even a segment of one, for TV or home video.
-
Thank you to DRs Cillaliz, George, and John G for the compliments on my England photos!
-
It's really quiet in our room. I'm trying not to lose my cool about all this.
{{{{{Hugs}}}}} to DR Matthew!

That clip of Al Jolson is astounding, DR John G. A whole different world.
But that was the 1930s. I was touched by the remnants of that world in the early 1960s, when the men in the (all white, naturally) First Christian Church of Fort Lauderdale would put on the occasional minstrel show. I kid you not. I also kid you not that a certain young church pianist/organist (age 12 at the first one of these) was blackfaced along with the rest of them. I still have the programs, but I don't remember us ever having any pictures of it. Believe me, I wish there was one somewhere.
And we thought nothing of this. Even then, it was obviously still considered a form of entertainment that was all in good fun. There were two of these put on while we were there -- in 1961 and 1963. One little sidebar event augments what little memory I had of them. The JFK assassination happened on the day of the show, and the church tastefully rescheduled that Friday evening's minstrelsy to the following week, holding a little memorial service/vigil instead. I am not making this up.
-
I've never heard of the Sims.
-
But yesterday I did play an interesting game with my niece. It's called Guess Who Mix N Mash.
You have to make a face out of monsters/people/animals. And then you ask questions trying to guess who you are. My niece is obsessed with it.
http://www.amazon.com/Guess-Who-Mix-and-Mash/dp/B0036RIOV6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1359297816&sr=8-5&keywords=guess+who+board+game
-
I tried to post the picture but for some reason it just wouldn't work.

I am hungry!

Tonight is the SAG awards. And the SAG red carpet.
In the Eastern time zone it's on from 6-8pm and then 8-10pm.
-
here is another un PC scene from WHOOPEE with Eddie Cantor. The set up he was hiding in an oven and it blows up. The Sherrif is looking for a white man. Since he has black on his face he gets away.
Also in the film is Ethel Shutta who years later was in the original Follies belting Broadway Baby

And the word of the day is: WHELM!
And The Song Of The Day Is: UNDER THE SEA
-
I loved seeing all of DR GINNY's London photos yesterday. Most excellent!
Hearing GOOD singers vibes for MR BK....hopefully it won't be ALL American Idol yowling and growling and sliding all of over the place.....until 30 seconds into the song when there is a key change and then the screaming starts....
-
One thing that ALWAYS bothered me about the Mary Martin PETER PAN.....besides Mary Martin.....is that she comes looking for her shadow....and before she finds it....her shadow is over the wall of the room.....
-
Tonight is the SAG awards.....
-
As regards today's notes, I must admit that I do play video games now and again. I particularly like games where I can go around killing Nazis! I did try a Sims game once but soon gave up, finding it pointless and boring. I also still enjoy playing board games like Monopoly at Christmas.
-

...
Thanks, DR JRand!
-
Good morning, all! It's is warmer today, and I am very happy for that fact.
I did not go to the reading last night. At 7:00, it was too cold, my shoulder ached too much, and I was too uncomfortable to take several different subways down to City Hall and wander about Park Row until I found the correct building.I had no idea how long the trek would take and my mood would not have been one to enjoy a new work. I owed my friend Peter more than that.
I had dinner, watched the oriignal 1962 BBC telecast of the Royal Ballet in Frederick Ashton's La Fille Mal Gardée with the original cast. It's a wonderful, funny ballet with a charming score, and it cheered me up. David Blair, Stanley Hlden, and Nadia Nerina were excellent, and at the end of the storm Alexander Grant as the simpleton-fiance is flown off with his umbrella, so we had a bit of Peter Pan and Mary Poppinfs to close the act. Very funny.
Today, I will clean house and work a bit on liner norws for DEAREST ENEMY.
-
DR George, I worked with Stephen Terrell at Goodspeed on REDHEAD. You have more pleasant memories of him than I do.
-
More coffee!
-
Maybe he wasn't playing Peter Pan there.....
-
I'm up. Looks like it's been dribbling rain again.
-
There's nothing wrong with playing board games or any other games every now and then. But The Sims players, at least many of them, become obsessed with the world they create and the family and the story. The write fan fiction (another curious thing), pages and pages of it, and have their own Sims discussion boards online where they are the only ones posting - it's curious.

Good point. That's another one.

I am very grateful to NBC for 4 hours of figure skating this afternoon - show from 1-3, competition from 3-5.
-
Yes I watched the ladies free skate live last night.....and would have reversed the first and second place skaters.....but unfortunately, Gracie Gold had such a poor short program that it was impossible for her to catch Ashley What'shername....who fell on her backside TWICE during the free skate....and still got first place.
-
Gracie Gold was robbed!
-
Amen.

I will have to watch that in its entirety. What's interesting is that Fifi D'Orsay, in the same "Follies" sequence with Ethel, was in "Wonder Bar."

Tonight on TCM they are showing a few EARLY Alfred Hitchcock films.....British films from Britain.....
-
I watched a cute dvd from the library this morning. It was with Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake. It's called Trouble With the Curve.
-
My library finally got the US version of the GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. I am looking forward to seeing how it compares to the Swedish movie.

Two flat routines for the men so far....

From DR Cilla:
My mom gave me a Crazy Cat Lady sign years ago.
I could have had one since I was 18. After I worked my way up to my dream of 4 cats I remembered the saying, "Be careful what you wish for". ;D
-
It's really quiet in our room. I'm trying not to lose my cool about all this.
Sorry.
STAY COOL VIBES!!!
-
We watched COMPLIANCE last night.
An excellent, albeit disturbing, film.
Ann Dowd, as well as the rest of the cast, is terrific.
-
Delighted that ARGO won the Producers' Guild Award last night as Best Picture.
-
Sunday morning greetings! Fr. Richard is on his way to Lima, but told them earlier in the week that I would not be there today.
I figured you wouldn't go. I hope you are feeling better today.

Elmore, how was "I Capture the Castle"? I love that book.
Unfortunately it isn't available as an eBook.

I'm finally getting around to watching last Sunday's Downton Abbey so I'll be up do date for tonight's episode.
-
Great win for the US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS for the men!!!

It looks like a cute game.

Thanks, DR Jane. A little better, but I'm glad to have a previously-scheduled appointment with my doctor on Tuesday. Otherwise, I'd have tried to see him on Friday, because my ears are still plugged up and the right one hurts.
-
Great win for the US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS for the men!!!
I agree, DR JRand! There sure were a lot of empty seats in that arena...
-
I finished my first draft of DEAREST ENEMY history, and now I have some tidying up to do. The temperature has dropped quite a bit: it's suddenly freezing in here, and I am starving. I did not make my planned trip to the bank, so I will do that tomorrow morning on my way to Toyland.
So, what's for dinner?
-
I rarely watching ice skating anymore. :o
-
DR Ginny how do you clean your Vera Bradley purses?
-

Yes....yes there were. I think DR JANE is right....there is not much of an audience for skating anymore.....maybe come February and the Winter Olympics, that will change.

It does taste good. But there is a lot of liquid in the pot.
-
What cut, or whatever, are you using for the pork? Or did you go out on the farm and pull some yourself?
-
DR Ginny how do you clean your Vera Bradley purses?
Wash them on gentle in the washing machine. I turn them inside out and put them in mesh lingerie bags. Also, adding a quarter cup of white vinegar sets the colors. Hang to dry.
-
DR Ginny--I enjoyed the photos you posted here. Unfortunately, I can't see the ones on facebook.
-
So, what's for dinner?
Chicken, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and vanilla pudding.
-
Hello, everyone.
Continued get-well-soon vibes to DR Ginny and anyone else who needs them.
-
I spent some time this morning going through my closet, as several garments that had been tight are now quite comfortable. "Ooh, this fits," or "Not yet." Some of my jeans are positively baggy now, giving new meaning to the phrase "Big happy pants."

i didn't realize I had so much on which to catch up.

That sounds good too. I like tilapia because it's easy to cook and you can do most anything to it.
-
What cut, or whatever, are you using for the pork? Or did you go out on the farm and pull some yourself?
LOL. I just used the 3 1/2-pound shoulder roast that the recipe on the packet called for. The liquid doesn't matter. I can have pulled pork soup one day this week for lunch.

I have slowly watched less ice skating since Keith retired. At night I watch tv with him and then prefer not to watch during the day. When we had a treadmill in the bedroom I would watch while I was walking.

Most of my purses have been denim and I wash those in the machine. I fear the fabric on this purse will shrink in the wash & I'm not eve sure I can get it to turn inside out because of the size and style. I will give it a try because it needs to be cleaned.

The mesh bag is not a requirement, just an extra precaution. If your bag has a cardboard support in the base, be sure you take it out before washing!

It sounds lovely for you. We had snow flurries this morning. It gave everything a pretty dusting and then melted by late morning.

Oh no, I'm Lady Edith Crawley :-[

I really was clueless how to answers most of those questions.
-
Oh no, I'm Lady Edith Crawley :-[
me too!!
-
So today was a busy day
-
Oh no, I'm Lady Edith Crawley :-[
me too!!
;D
-
got up at 7 and made a dozen sandwiches -- 6 ham and swiss and six chicken salad with cranberries
-
they were for the annual congregational meeting - we have a luncheon before hand every year - soup and sandwiches - all the ladies bring sandwiches and some of the ladies make a soup - this year it was a wonderful chicken noodle
-
This is also our Super Sock Sunday - we collected new white tube socks to give to homeless - this year we had 304 pairs - and a number of people told me they forgot them at home and would bring them next week
-
Our annual meeting went quite well - everyone was in agreement - and we voted to move forward with getting a associate Pastor. There is a candidate that was approved by a search committee and now that the budget was approved we can move ahead- The Council will meet the candidate on Tuesday and if we all agree then the candidate will preach in a couple of weeks time and go before the congregation for a vote
-
Oh, dear, I'm Isobel Crawley...
-
and the ticket sales for this year's chili contest began today - this year's theme is US Presidents - we have to decorate our booths - I was first in and got Lincoln - there are 11 other cooks signed up already
-
The night before the wedding the father of the groom hosted a nice dinner and party on the beach. I almost fell over dancing with a little heel on my sandals. Once I removed my shoes I danced the night away.
During the evening Craig got up and rapped to one of the songs. He was great and the hit of the evening. Those who saw it wanted a repeat & those who missed it wanted to see what they missed. One of my niece's best friends was using my niece's camera to take photos. After a few pics she realized he needed to be recorded.
My niece said all of the photos on her camera are gone. :(
People were still talking about him at the wedding.
-
I was so busy I never had a chance to try that recipe John G found for me I will have to try it this coming weekend for practice
-
Poor Vixdad has wrenched his back
-
Oh, dear, I'm Isobel Crawley...
She is one of the nicest people out of the "royalty" even if she can be annoying. ;D

there seems to be a lot of that going around!! LOL!

thank you

He is watching the "Carrry On Laughing " dvd set I bought for him for Christmas
-
when I got home from church Vixdad wanted pizza so I ordered one and the Vixter went to pick it up
-
she was hardly gone when she was on the phone - she lost the steering in the car!
-
She was calling from the Knights of Columbus hall around the corner - went over and lifted the hood (she was driving my dad's old station wagon) and discovered that the sepentine belt had snapped - it happened right next to the nearly empty parking lot and she managed to wrest the car in and park it
-
Dinner: My first ever Coronation Chicken Sandwich.
At least as I understand it to be. Chicken Salad with Thousand Island on bread? The bread was "Pane di Casa" from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.
It totally works as a combination and I was reminded that Thousand Island is similar to various "sandwich spreads" that go with many things. I found that you mustn't slather on too much of the dressing because it can overpower the main event. I corrected that on my second one. Oh yes, there was a second one.
-
The chicken salad with cranberries sounds wonderful. I'm putting cranberries on my shopping list as we type.
-
the kind lady bartender at the KoC allowed her to come in and use the phone and wait for me - she also wrote a note to the people in charge explaining that the car was disabled so that it wouldn't be towed away
-
SAG Awards should be starting about now, I think.
-
He is watching the "Carrry On Laughing " dvd set I bought for him for Christmas
I haven't seen a "Carry On" movie in years and years.
-
Vixter was very lucky had she traveled another 2 blocks she would have been on the main road of town and almost certainly would have been in an accident
-
Oh, dear, I'm Isobel Crawley...

DR Vixmom before you said you were Edith. Who are you, Edith or Isobel?
-
Vixter was very lucky had she traveled another 2 blocks she would have been on the main road of town and almost certainly would have been in an accident
Scary.
-
The chicken salad with cranberries sounds wonderful. I'm putting cranberries on my shopping list as we type.
I used "craisens" sold by Ocean Spray - if you make the chicken salad and let it meld for an hour or so they plump up nice and sweet. I got the idea from a sandwich I had from a deli near my office - in their version they also had walnuts - I didn't have any walnuts though
-
She was calling from the Knights of Columbus hall around the corner - went over and lifted the hood (she was driving my dad's old station wagon) and discovered that the sepentine belt had snapped - it happened right next to the nearly empty parking lot and she managed to wrest the car in and park it
I would have no idea what this belt is called. Thank goodness she was near a parking lot.
-
Oh, dear, I'm Isobel Crawley...
there seems to be a lot of that going around!! LOL!
DR Vixmom before you said you were Edith. Who are you, Edith or Isobel?
I am the annoying but good-hearted mother of the heir - isn't that the same as you and Ginny or am I being dense?
-
Yikes - I'm glad The Vixter is OK!
-
DR Vixmom, Edith is the middle daughter and Isobel is Matthew's mother.
-
She was calling from the Knights of Columbus hall around the corner - went over and lifted the hood (she was driving my dad's old station wagon) and discovered that the sepentine belt had snapped - it happened right next to the nearly empty parking lot and she managed to wrest the car in and park it
I would have no idea what this belt is called. Thank goodness she was near a parking lot.
I knew what it was because the exact same thing happened to me in my old station wagon (also a Ford Taurus) before I got my van - that time I was on a main road BUT I was also right next to a parking lot and was able to get off the road safely

AH! I am Isobel then.

Yikes - I'm glad The Vixter is OK!
thank you -
-
maybe this driving thing isn't working out for her - she took my car and the brakes went out my dad's and she lost the steering ....
-
on the other hand - she handled both situations with aplomb and no incidents or accidents!

That's great.
The 2nd time I drove on my own something died in the car and I had just enough time to pull it into the station my parents used for repairs. I was very lucky to be near it.

Violet, Dowager Countess here

The 3rd time I drove the car I was driving past the golf course when I noticed a golf ball flying straight at me. I figured it would be best to slow down & let it hit the front window vs flying in through the open side window & hitting my head. I was very grateful to see it bounce off the front window leaving only a big crack in the shape of a golf ball.
I was hesitant to drive a 4th time-lol

At the Screen Actors Awards:
Julianne Moore just thanked all the cast members of Game Change (about Sarah Palin) and I thought I heard "Sandy Bainum." Sure enough, I looked at imdb and saw that Sandy played Cindy McCain!

Last night we took my Dad out for his birthday dinner - we went to a local seafood restaurant as he loves seafood -

Oysters Rockerfeller as an appetizer and a 2 lb whole lobster , served with baked potato, stuffed clam and veggies for an entree
he was in heaven

My first time out I drove into Beverly Hills. I had never done that with my temp license. Nothing happened except that it was my first time dealing with major traffic and drivers who kept cutting in front of me & honking. You would have thought I was in NY ;)

the traffic here (and our aggressive drivers ) is why the Vixter hesitated so long before she felt ready to try her hand at driving
-
I just never wanted to drive and for the most part still don't.
-
I didn't hesitate at long as the Vixter. I got my license when I was around 17, shortly before or after.

I've started watching a BBC mini-series called "Injustice" with James Purefoy and Nathaniel Parker. It's from the creator of "Foyle's War." Good, but it could be better.

Got that on reserve at the library. Can't wait to see it.

It will get easier, Matthew.

Did I say I started THE LADY VANISHES? That was last night, right? How it all runs together sometimes. Anyhoo, I finished it this evening. I'm loving this return to the early British Hitchcock films. It's long overdue. THE 39 STEPS will be next, then I'll have to branch out from Criterion Blu-rays to the Criterion laserdisc of BLACKMAIL.
-
Yes, DR Jrand62, these were shown on TCM tonight. 39 STEPS, LADY, and SABOTAGE. It's: a sign. Couldn't help but watch a few minutes of them there, too.
-
But the Blu-rays are a revelation.

Today, my sister and I saw "The Hobbit, part 1." I saw it in the 3-D 48/fps showing, but she didn't want to see the 3-D. I actually wanted to see the regular version to compare the differences and I liked seeing both versions. I'm now watching the extended DVD of "The Fellowship of the Ring" to see how they did the Bilbo Baggins flashback. I don't remember which movie it's actually on, but I'll find it.

Wow...just wow...certainly not in the good way. :-X

Yes, George. Certainly not in a good way.

My understanding is that that scene was filmed for this movie, it was not from any of the previous ones

I think this is the first I've ever heard about the Sims.
A friend of mine had one of the first releases of "SimCity," about 20 years ago. He showed me what he had created and I just didn't get it. That kind of video game never appealed to me. I preferred the Super Mario games. :)
-
DR George, I worked with Stephen Terrell at Goodspeed on REDHEAD. You have more pleasant memories of him than I do.
Do tell! :o

SAG Awards should be starting about now, I think.
I didn't realize that they were on. I started my DVR to record it about 10 minutes after the rebroadcast started, just as they were announcing the first category. I didn't get the beginning, but at least I'll get all the winners.
-
Jane, I enjoyed "Injustice." It wasn't in "Foyle's" league, but what is? It was a good exploration of the gray surrounding moral issues.
-
One more.
-
;D
-
Eight!
-
Laundry is done, dishes are done, just need to put it all away.
Oh, yea. My Sunday evening.
:)
-
Listened to Aaron Copland today.
;D ;D
-
Oh, yeah. Forgot to put away the laundry. Thanks, Sam.

Went to a great party this afternoon.
The salad I made had yellow cherry tomatoes, red seedless grapes, blueberries, edamame soybeans, vidalia onion summer tomato dressing, and baby spring mix salad greens.
YUMMY

You welcome John.
;D

Pot luck parties are the best. Always more food than anyone can eat. And as different layers of the guests arrive, the food table changes. To try everything, you must eat during the entire party. And I do.
And of course. The table we stay away from, pies, cookies, cakes, homemade treats. NOT.
:)
-
Stayed till the end. Took 4 bags of fudge, peanut brittle, cookies, etc., home for the boyfriend and his son. All home made.
Now I'm tired and very very full.
-
Goodnight everyone.
Vibes for sweet dreams.
:) ;) ;D 8)

It was so hard to keep my trap shut about tonight's Downton Abbey but I did because I didn't even want to hint at anything, and that's all I'm saying about that.

Tonight's DOWNTON ABBEY. :o
oh yes, I agree.
Me, too.
I was quite surprised

The show went pretty damn well if you consider that a week ago there was no show at all. She went up on the first song, as she has done at every rehearsal, all four of them. She just couldn't retain it. But I gave her a line to say if it happened and told her to say that and then embrace the fumfer wholeheartedly - as soon as she went up, she said the line and it got a huge laugh and the audience was completely with her - then she started the verse over and finished the number. Second number was fine, but the third number, which was designed to do something very specific in the show - well, she started off great and they were totally entranced with it, and then, unfortunately, she skipped an entire verse and went to the end, and the pianist was totally thrown and she stopped and went back and still didn't do it right, so that the whole point of the second song was totally gone - tomorrow at the post mortem she will understand that the audience will forgive the first one but not the second, and you could visibly feel the tension in the room because they got really nervous she'd keep doing it. Fortunately that was the last time that happened. She did very well on my song, When You're Waiting For Love, got all the laughs - then she screwed up the set-up to the next song so much that it completely threw the pianist who then screwed up the opening of the song - my favorite arrangement in the show. She did the song okay, but the fumfer was kind of fatal for the mood. But then she hit the number that I knew would be the audience favorite - and she really took the direction I gave her yesterday and she KILLED it - they totally loved every second of it - she belabored one joke beyond its humor point, but otherwise it was perfect. And from then on, pretty much everything worked. She was too dependent on taking drinks of water - nobody needs that much water - it's a total crutch - but it all worked rather well and we'll probably keep about two-thirds of it and then build the rest of the act around that.
