Well, you've read the notes, the notes reviewed the reviewers, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently writing some MOO-ray reviews.

And the word of the day is: SEMPITERNAL!

I haven't been the first post after BK in a long time.

My cousins will be in town from Pennsylvania, again for Cousin Ross trying out his comedy act.
Ross' brother Karl and sister-in-law Stephanie said they found the perfect house, so I hope they'll be there and I can hear about that.

Jane wrote yesterday: "Today my sister would have been 69. It is sad I went from her adoring little sister to being relieved when she was gone. I like to remember her like this, before the abuse towards me was the norm and she was more often than not a wonderful big sister."
Jane, it's interesting about sibling issues - my brother has been different in the last month to seven weeks or so, pretty much rewriting the past, and people are telling me they always saw that side of him all the years.
-
On my mom's side, the cousins near D.C. (the sister of the cousin who's now in Brooklyn) had a baby not too long ago and they got a new house too.

Thanks, DR FJL, for the parody lyrics.
Just one question: is the dance break for me, or for the 95-year-old? :)
-
The dance break if for everyone in the audience.

Hello from Berlin!
-
Well, tonight's the last concert. What a whirlwind! my friend Robin and I had a tour of Berlin by a local fan. We went to Checkpoint Charlie and remnants of the wall. The public transportation here is excellent but very confusing so it was great having Anke show us around.
-
Sorry I haven't been here. My wi-fi access has been spotty.
-
Speaking of Robin, she hit to go backstage and meet Barbra after the show! We call her SuperFan. I'm really happy for her!
-
I did see Mr. Barrett and his partner outside the arena before and after the show in Amsterdam. They both loved the show.

Lovely picture from DR JANE yesterday, even though the story to go with it was sad.
Sounds like the show MR BK saw last night was fun.
DR KEVIN H is still gadding about the globe.
Vibes for DR SINGDAW's performance this evening. I am sure it will be a birthday highlight.

Good morning, all!
I am off to Toyland to continue the printing and the taping. I have very little to report. Despite my trying to avoid trouble, I seem once again to be in it up to my butt, and there maybe more on this later.

Today is the Queen's Official Birthday (King's Official Birthday in the reign of a male monarch). It is the selected day on which the birthday of the monarch of the Commonwealth realms (currently Queen Elizabeth II) is officially celebrated in those countries. The date varies as adopted by each Commonwealth country, but is generally around the end of May to the start of June, to coincide with a high probability of fine weather in the Northern Hemisphere for outdoor ceremonies.
The sovereign's birthday was first officially marked in the United Kingdom in 1748. Since then, the date of the king or queen's birthday has been determined throughout the British Empire and later the Commonwealth according to either different royal proclamations issued by the sovereign or governor or by statute laws passed by the local parliament. The exact date of the celebration today varies from country to country and except by coincidence does not fall on the day of the monarch's actual birthday (that of the present monarch being 21 April). In some cases, it is an official public holiday, sometimes coinciding with the celebration of other events. Most Commonwealth realms release a Birthday Honours List at this time.

Greetings from Toyland!

Good VERY LATE MORNING, all.
Wow, did I sleep in, or what? All the way to 9:30 a.m., as opposed to the usual 7:00?
Coffee!
-
Oh my, this coffee's good. Emeril's Big Easy Bold.
It's big, it's easy, it's bold. What more can one ask for?
-
A couple of long dreams -- as per usual for a late sleep-in -- of which I can only remember bits of the very last part. Which is unfortunate, because they definitely lacked anything angstful or even irritating. There was just a bunch of goings-on at some large place or other with a bunch of people or other, and the one tidbit I can clearly recall just isn't worth much. Damn it to hell.

Waiting for thunderstorms to arrive. I can see them on the radar

We had storms yesterday too. I'm convinced there is a causal relationship between the trapper putting in fresh bait and heavy rain to dampen the scent on the fresh bait

Just read a wonderful one-star Goodreads review of the new Hofstetter book, won in the little giveaway I always do. I read with quiet fascination how the plot was boring, that no sixteen-year-old would ever call her mother mommy without irony, and that the other young characters were stereotypes, that Adriana as a journalist would embrace social media because it's, well, social media, that Adriana hates technology but has an iPhone and a Mac (the perils of coming into a series without having read the previous books, of course), and, to top it off, how I maligned and made mockery of this girl's favorite musical. Then I looked at the girl who wrote it - all of seventeen if she's a day and one would be quite certain that this girl does love social media, thrives on it, doesn't call her mother mommy, irony or not and probably hasn't for years, and, best of all, amongst the books she has read recently and loathed (she loathes a LOT of books) was Lord of the Flies, which she found not well written. I'm in very good company. :)
-
She also says that I say Adriana is "pretty" - it's funny, but other than her clothing and style I don't believe I've ever actually described Miss Hofstetter and I haven't done so on purpose. One is tempted to leave a little response, but Goodreads encourages one not to - in other words, why should a seventeen-year-old "critic" be criticized? Whether one agrees or not, I think all critics should be criticized if warranted and when you write a review like that I think it's all fair game. I think if William Golding were alive, he might just drop her a missive.

From DR Cilla:
My mom told me that a woman in our home town let in a raccoon as sort of a pet. When the DNR heard about it they called her and told her she couldn't have a wild animal as a pet. They asked what it was doing at that moment she said "Sitting on the couch watching TV". And it was!
Funny! :)
-
From DR TCB:
Actually, JACK REACHER is better than I thought.
I can agree with that.

Jane wrote yesterday: "Today my sister would have been 69. It is sad I went from her adoring little sister to being relieved when she was gone. I like to remember her like this, before the abuse towards me was the norm and she was more often than not a wonderful big sister."

Yes it is interesting. Keith never saw the good side of her and he met her when we were 15, which I find interesting. It got really bad after we started dating & things were really falling apart with my mother. My father was a mess and all she did was cause problems instead of helping. I would defend her to Keith and tell him about all the wonderful things she did for me when we were young. He only watched it get worse over the years until I finally stopped defending her-very sad. It is much easier to walk away from people who are not in your family.

I agree it best not to say anything. When I look at reviews I look at a variety of opinions to get a better feel for my personal reaction to a book. A poor review sometimes makes me more interested in the book than all the best reviews do. It is a combination of both really that helps me decide to read or not to read.

Well, today's going to be a day. I am going to my sister's in a bit (I must take a shower and get dressed first) and we're going to look for a birthday gift for our mom because her birthday is tomorrow! The same day as Father's Day. I got my dad a CD and I'm sure that my sister has something for him, also.

After we look and/or find something for mom, I have to usher tonight at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts for Masterworks Choral Ensemble: Pop Meets the Classics (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2013/6/15/masterworks-choral-ensemble-pop-meets-the-classics.html). 1 star is pretty harsh. And she said a lot of very harsh things. But at least it is obvious that she read the book. And at least she articulated exactly what she didn't like about it.

How ridiculous! Tells you all you need to know about this "reviewer."

Don't leave a response. People on goodreads have to feel like they can give their true opinions without the author commenting. There have been a lot of problems with authors and readers getting into battles. And most readers I know hate when authors do this.
It's interesting because I would never give a book 1 star. And while I always try to articulate my criticisms I still do it realizing that the author could read it.

I'm not leaving a comment, although since this little teen has a blog (where she misspells my name) if I did leave a comment it wouldn't be on the Goodreads site. My feeling is that if she's putting out her little teen thoughts for all to read, then anything is fair game. Her "review" of Lord of the Flies is most amusing - she doesn't believe the book, that children would not behave like that - I think we all know that that book is right on the money about how children would ape the way adults behave, but this girl thinks that human nature is "good" and never "bad." Maybe she's trying to win the Anne Frank award. But it's so obvious she's of her generation and that no one sixteen would call their mother mommy without "irony" (this current generation is all about the irony) when I just had lunch with two teens who absolutely call their mother mommy with no irony whatsoever. And to say I somehow soil The Music Man when the book is an obvious love letter to the show just shows how truly ignorant she is.
-
And I am home from Toyland! We ran out of paper about 2:30,with 6 numbers to go, and we ran out of tape around 2:00, so we reconvene next week when new products arrive.
Peter kindly gave me a ride to the Upper West Side, and now I'm thinking about dinner.
I do not know what Goodreads is, and I think I will stay that way.

I disagree. I don't think that just because she posts the review on her blog that it is fair game for the author. I would not comment period.
I'm not saying that what she wrote is right. It certainly wasn't very nice. But it's her opinion.

Busy day here, so just time for a quick ketchup and hello.

Tomorrow will be, too, as I've got an all-afternoon rehearsal. Tech/Hell Week commences.
-
This isn't difficult music (okay, a few passages to work out, but nothing extraordinary), but it's been tricky getting used to reading and playing it. It's a two-piano arrangement and I'm playing the upper part. What's weird is staying on the upper half of the keyboard with unrelenting treble clef and lots of "8va" and making sure both hands are in the right octaves. I haven't checked to see if this is literally the case, but the arranger might have created it with the possibility in mind of two people actually performing it on one piano.

I have tried to like Goodreads but I find it confusing and not that interesting. I don't need to track the books I've read and want to read - I wouldn't even know how to do such a thing, nor would I want to.
As to the girl, I'm not going to comment (although your post really makes me want to), but would have every right to do so once she makes it public on a blog. Many authors, of books, plays, films have written angry and/or pointed letters in rebuttal to critics, especially when the critics have been really stupid in their criticism. That's the thing about this girl - she is obviously like the girls Adriana doesn't care for - and is "reviewing" the book in that way. She levels certain objections that have no basis in reality in what's written in the book - that's not opinion, that's stupid. It's fine to not like the book, but not when it has obviously hit a nerve with her in terms of the "stereotypes" she's going on about. But that's the thing about this generation - just as with EVERY generation there ARE stereotypes. I have sat next to teenage girls and had to endure the conversations and they are exactly what's in this book - I don't make this stuff up, you know.
-
Why are we on page three?
-
I've written half of the commentary and will now take a break. I've packed and done everything I need to do.
-
I have tried to like Goodreads but I find it confusing and not that interesting. I don't need to track the books I've read and want to read - I wouldn't even know how to do such a thing, nor would I want to.
I sort of tried it once, several years back, and was mystified as to its workings and its value. To me, at any rate. Can't even imagine wanting such a "tracking" thing. But I do know other people who are active with it and swear by it.
-
We are not just on page three.
We are only half way THROUGH page three.

I am having a slice of pizza and pondering my evening. While we were working today, Peter played me the reading of his musical, "I Capture The castle," and I'm thinking I will watch the film again.

I m reading at my leisure Murder At The High School Musical and I don't know if I will finish it tonight or not.
-
After I finish it, I've got a ghost story, the title of which I forget, the new Mary Wickes biography, and a Jane Austen mystery, Death Comes To Pemberley. which will be a BBC miniseries next year.
I also want to reread Tom Jones and Robin Buss' translation of The Count of Monte Cristo.

As for tracking the books, DR Jennifer pushed it and then Keith also decided I needed to use it and transferred most of the books I've read onto their site. I admit I am really glad I'm tracking there.
I've been using Goodreads to search books since I discovered them and much prefer the reviews there than at Amazon.
If I read this review which is so low I would get a feel for the author and would see this is a book about an atypical teen who might be interesting. Basically I'm restating that a negative review like this could actually be a positive thing.
As for her blog, can't help you there and can understand why it is frustrating to you on top of the review.
-
I do believe Page 4 is too far away and I am not in a frenzied mood at the moment.
-
Gotta run. I'm having a treatment on my hair today to get rid of all the build-up from the pool. I don't know why this is an issue since I've never had a problem until I began swimming at the Y.

Page four is far and far is page four - that doesn't seem very sporting.
-
And maybe I'll just go to bed early and watch nothing.
-
I also need to win the lottery.

It was very sweet of some thoughtful dear reader to send today's notes to one of the reviewers I was talking about - I was, in fact, talking about several reviewers and this gentleman, a former dear reader, was one of them. You see, here it is again - it's okay for the reviewer to do whatever the reviewer likes but it's not cricket to review the reviewer. Because in case anyone isn't very clear on it - my notes are written by ME and reflect only my opinion, as it has every day since November of 2001. So, what the point of sending this day's notes to the reviewer is kind of beyond me - not hard to figure out who, but that's not really germane. It has resulted in a couple of pleasant e-mails back and forth, and that I enjoy.

NOT accompanying Fr. Richard to Lima, because I learned yesterday that our niece Rev. Amy is one of the guest preachers at our former church's Heritage Sunday. I will be attending that service and the festive lunch afterwards.

today the sun SHONE!!

The weather was warm but not too hot
-
a perfect day for the church yard sale
-
we didn't sell very much but it was quite enjoyable sitting in the SUN and chatting with everyone
-
The Vixter and I went in separate cars and we set off to head home -- I arrived home and the phone rang - the Vixters car wouldn't start - we think its the fuel pump....OY!
-
So I went back and picked her up ... her car is now living in front of the church
-
We were invited to a free dinner at The Texas Roadhouse tonight - we were given menu cards giving us the entree we were allowed to have - the Vixter had pulled pork and I had a 6 oz sirloin smothered in onions and mushrooms... we were allowed to pick our own sides, Vixter had a salad and baked potato and I had the green beans and loaded sweet potato
non alcoholic drinks were free as well... we also had a baskets of their delicious bread (made fresh every five minutes apparently!) which is served with honey cinnamon butter
they also had servers offering samples of the appetizers, I had some ribs, their version of the bloomin onion , I think they call it a catus flower, loaded cheese fries, and a hot boneless wing
I think I am going to get enourmously fat with the Vixter working there and I think I will enjoy every second of it

I came home a few minutes ago and am gobbling down leftovers from last night. It is even past my time to shut off the computer.
Sooo.... 'night

DR Ginny - that sounds like a lovely way to spend a day!
Yes, I'm looking forward to it, DR Singdaw. This is the Methodist church where Richard grew up, we were married (as we're his parents), and where Rob grew up. There's a lot I miss about attending there. It will be a nice family day. I hope the Lima folks forgive me for missing the 90th birthday of one of our parishioners. My staying in Middletown was actually Fr. Richard's idea...

I just finished "Murder at the School Musical" and I really enjoyed it. Not to spoil anything, but I liked how bk wrote this book and I like how the story ended up. When I get home, I'll do up an amazon review.

Very happy to hear it! And look forward to the review.

I buckled down Winsocki and finished the commentary - great to have that out of the way. I'm bringing it with me as I'm sure I'll add and subtract - I wrote it quickly, just to get it done and I'll definitely be adding some more humor to it - I never have the humor on the first pass - that always comes when I finesse.
-
I was going to try and be in bed by nine, but that just isn't going to happen - so I'll be happy if I'm asleep by ten-thirty. That will give me close to six hours of sleep, which is fine.
-
DR Ginny - that sounds like a lovely way to spend a day!
Yes, I'm looking forward to it, DR Singdaw. This is the Methodist church where Richard grew up, we were married (as we're his parents),
you and Richard are Richard's parents? Didn't that cause some kind of rift in the space time continum?!

Oh dear oh dear - our lowest posting day on the newly beautified board.
-
where did everybody go?
-
Since it si midnight here and I gave to get up in 6 hours I am afraid I will not be doing a lot of posting
-
Been running like crazy.
Fun stuff, i hope.
Or do you mean running for exercise?
Just back from a place outside of Austin that hosted a big barbecue fest. Wonderful western swing band played while we ate. Just loved hearing a western touch to the likes of "Sunny Side of the Street." The rains stayed away and it wasn't too hot, even with all the lit smokers and fire pits. Pork ribs, beef ribs, and, my favorite, the San Antonio barbecue place offered smoked pastrami with their rye saison beer, which tastes like rye bread. A perfect combination.

The birthday gal did not fall asleep. I consider this a success. :)
It turned out that many of the songs I picked had a personal connection for her, so she got very teary and it was all very sweet.
And my "Rose's Turn" killed. ;D
I'm sorry, but did you forget to match it with "Momma, Look Sharp"? Or "When You're Good to Mama"? Or "Mamma Mia"?

I think I am going to get enourmously fat with the Vixter working there and I think I will enjoy every second of it
They're not bad. I find the drinks a little overpriced and I don't care for the sweet bread or sweet butter, but I think the pork chop is wonderful. So, try that on a future visit.

Most excellent ~ ~ ~ TRAVEL GLOCKENSPIELS ~ ~ ~ for a safe and pleasant travel day for bk tomorrow.
A second helping.

So, I was shopping at Costco with my son, and out of the corner of my eye I see someone running toward me with arms open to give me a BIG HUG.
It was so nice to see DR Kerry today!
Sweet. But, where's the video?

And I am home from Toyland! We ran out of paper about 2:30,with 6 numbers to go, and we ran out of tape around 2:00, so we reconvene next week when new products arrive.
Peter kindly gave me a ride to the Upper West Side, and now I'm thinking about dinner.
I do not know what Goodreads is, and I think I will stay that way.
If you like to read then goodreads is an invaluable site. I love it and use it a lot. It allows you to track the books you've read and the books you want to read.
I'm not big on many of these review sites because I have no idea who these people are who are reviewing the books. Fifteen people could gush on and on about a book and it could turn out to be one of the worst books I've ever read. This girl didn't like "Lord of the Flies," and millions of others have (many besides her have not, I'll admit), but her review is part of the databank and those other readers' are not.

Waiting for thunderstorms to arrive. I can see them on the radar
Cilla, you have your very own radar?? That's pretty cool! Was it expensive?
;)
LOL, no, there is the Weather channel online and our local tv station has life radar online
-
After I finish it, I've got a ghost story, the title of which I forget, the new Mary Wickes biography, and a Jane Austen mystery, Death Comes To Pemberley. which will be a BBC miniseries next year.
I also want to reread Tom Jones and Robin Buss' translation of The Count of Monte Cristo.
I wish I had time to read. I did finish listening to Michael Pollen's "Cooked" in the car on the way to Austin and did start the new Harlen Coben mystery, "Six Years." But I was to be reading a lot of stuff that isn't on tape.
-
How was your weather today, Cillaliz?
-
Last night, I made the mistake of going into a Half-Price Books and finding 16 volumes of Balzac I didn't have. No lunches this week. And no room in the house for 16 new hardbacks.
-
We had a thunderstorm in the morning. Then it was humid and warm.
-
This morning, before 8 a.m., I was out at the Bountiful Baskets pickup area near the house to help fill the baskets and try the service for the first time. Have any of you tried this yet? You get a load of fresh fruit and vegetables for about $20.
I got some very good things and a few things I could live without (way too much fruit for my diabetes) and not enough vegetables. But the price was good.
-
I left for rehearsal for flute choir at 11:00. Then I was at the ice cream days Art in the Park until we played at 3:00. Got home about 5:00pm. Checked the traps...nothing
-
I was fine about the coon for most of the evening. But I had put a little fresh cat food in the trap by the window and was sure that it was going to come out at dusk and go in to the trap. No such luck. So I was a little stressed and that stresses the cats.
-
Then I went to the opening of a new farmers market on another side of town. Lots of urban hipsters getting their organic produce in the same way that the people at Bountiful Baskets were getting their conventional produce. And the prices were astronomically different. Still, I picked up some non-GMO corn to grill.
-
We're going to make page six.
-
I am extremely sleepy, but will stay up until my anxiety is gone....which it pretty much is now
-
In a moment.
-
Page Six!
-
Good night, all.
-
I can hear motorcycles again. I'll be glad when biker nights are over

I have a sweet tooth and I don't generally drink when I go out but I will have to see about the pork chop although right now I have my eye on the bone in rib eye

Vixmom, love your avatar

Time for me to get some sleep. Hope it's an uneventful night

Notes are written and I'm about to schedule them and pray it works. I won't know, of course, until I'm up in the morning.
-
What exactly is non-GMO?
-
I am very confused about some of the things that were said today. Why would a dear reader have to send your notes to some reviewer? I thought anybody could read your notes as well as out posts?
Also, I can't figure out why anyone would want to track the books they read? Books are supposed to be one of the joys of our world. All of this tracking and reviewing and scoring, and whatever else just seems strange to me. I have no problem if others want to do it, but I will pass, thank you.
-
Still, it seems that there was a lot of anger and disagreement in the living room today. And THAT stresses me out.

I spent most of my day hovering over my cell phone, waiting for my sister to call me. She and my brother-in-law are leaving very early tomorrow morning for Mexico. BK, please wave as your plane and my sister's plane cross (from a safe distance) over California. It is very weird to worry about not hearing from her, but since our mom was killed, neither one of us ever leaves town without talking on the phone together. I know it is silly, but it makes me feel strange.
