Well, you've read the notes, the notes had company, and now it is time for you to post until the company cows come home - they're currently doing a production of Cowmpany.
-
And the word of the day is: HABILIMENT!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
First! Again.
But it's pretty easy when BK is on the east coast.

Phone rings, door chimes.

First! Again.

Second - again!

BK, thanks for the great notes about COMPANY. I found your opinion very interesting.

G'night!

DRs can get an idea of the visual style of this production of Company by taking a gander at this here video:

Dittos are about all i can manage at 2:55am on my nook.

The notes were very entertaining and a relief from my boredom of a sleepless night.
-
DR Jane - sorry you did not sleep well. Hope you feel better as the day progresses.
-
Good morning to all

Vibes for a successful flight back home
-
Good morning, all.
Another oddly decent sleep here, for which I always feel grateful, as though it's such a rarely bestowed privilege. Why, oh why (oh why-o) is the perfect sleep such an elusive, special thing these days? HELL, we had them all the time in our youth!

TOD
Sweeney Todd with the original Broadway cast. I became obsessed with Mr. Sondheim and had to have every recording there was about Mr. Sondheim. I eventually got to meet him and he even gave me tickets to the opening night performance of Sunday In the Park With George.
-
Good morning, all!
I have nothing to report: I'm off to the bank, Pearl Art Supplies and Toyland.
-
Wednesday morning greetings! I'll probably be E & T most of the day because Mom and I have a shopping trip planned and we have an extra pair of hands - my sister! She and her husband decided to stop here on their way home from Washington, DC. They called late last night from the hotel and I'm to pick up my sister in a couple of hours.
-
And I like the change up today with a question/topic of the day.
-
Travel vibes for BK - you know what to do when you fly over Ohio...
-
A little disappointing, but certainly no surprise, to hear that COMPANY was so run of the mill in spite of the bright spots.
-
you know what to do when you fly over Ohio...
Parachute out? ;D
-
VIBES for a perfect flight back!
-
I love it when Dino at the piano plays his famed medley from Cowmpany.
-
:)
-
Good Morning.
Glorious Wednesday vibes everyone.
;)

:)
-
TOD - my first Sondheim was probably the movie version of GYPSY. On stage, it was a COMPANY tour that came through Ann Arbor when I was in college, in which Tandy Cronyn played Amy. In NYC, I've seen A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, SWEENEY TODD (closing performance with Dorothy Louden as Mrs. Lovett) and the original SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE.
I've seen FORUM twice, most recently at Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park, and longer ago as the opening production at our local dinner theatre La Comedia. Our very own DR Elmore was in that cast!
-
Sending out vibes to everyone-- because it's Wednesday, and you just never know when you'll need them.
-
TODAY'S RANT:
I just read in the morning paper that WOODSON BLASE, a warrant officer from Leander, TX, shot a THERAPY DOG...in its own back yard. And, as is often the case, he had come to the wrong house. (Thankfully, the dog is expected to survive...though it will be lame.)
It seems like almost every day I'm reading about some cop shooting somebody's pet dog. What is the matter with police these days?
I have always respected the police and the difficult job that they do, but these trigger-happy cowards who cringe when a dog simply barks at them should be fired. They are a danger to the public at large.
And, the police chiefs who back up this kind of behavior should be fired also.
>:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Travel vibes for MR BK this lovely summer day.
-
I also enjoyed reading the COMPANY notes today.
It is a most entertaining and lovely show. I would like to do it someday, as a director, but that is unlikely.
When it was done at the only Professional Theatre that I work at, the director chosen was living with the only musical director in town who would really do the show justice, so she was chosen to direct the show.... I was directing a show downstairs during its run, and we could hear it going on above us.....but I didn't really want to SEE it.....
-
Like DR GINNY, my first exposure to Mr Sondheim was probably the movie version of GYPSY.....and I later saw WEST SIDE STORY on television, although I heard many songs from both on television variety shows. And I think the Jack Paar Show, the hour version on Friday night, had "Everything's Coming Up Roses" as its theme music.....
I was 11 or 12 years old when I saw GYPSY, and it was marvelous. I loved the songs, and I wanted the soundtrack - which I finally found for ninety nine cents in a bargain bin! It was a cut out and had a little brass ring through the top left hand side of the album.
-
I'm up, I'm up - no treadmill today, but jogging will resume tomorrow.
-
The Amy in last night's show was terrific.
-
TOD:
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Shubert in Los Angeles w/Jean Simmons and Margaret Hamilton.
-
I first came to COMPANY when PBS was showing the Making Of....documentary..... When I turned it on, they were going through "Another Hundred People", and I was fascinated. I immediately purchased the OBC and LOVED IT! Still do....have it on CD....and play it a LOT. Also have a couple of revivals on CD....one with a pink cover and one with a blue cover....both of which I have played once or twice. I also have the DVD version of the Raul Esparza version....which I have watched....once.
I keep going back to the OBC and the documentary - both of which are fantastic.
-
I have appeared in stage productions of WEST SIDE STORY (a few times), INTO THE WOODS, GYPSY, and A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (my favorite)......
I have a photograph of Mr Sondheim that he sent to me when I wrote him a letter, he also answered a question that I asked..... The photo is a couple of decades old, and I can tell now that it is a computer printed photo....but it is still very nice to have and is in a frame next to Frances Farmer and Carroll Baker. Good company, indeed.
-
Good morning, all.
Safe travel vibes for BK.
-
TOD:
My first big exposure to Sondheim was the cast album of "A Little Night Music," which I think I loved initially because our minister's daughter hated it. Too morally loose for her. Yet those words, just tumbling out of those people's mouths. Streams and streams of beautiful words, many of which I heard for the first time. Played that album from the library continually. Got my own copy for my birthday, then a copy of the libretto, then a copy of Bergman's original screenplay. It was an obsession.
First production of one of his shows was a tour of "Side by Side by Sondheim" with Hermione Gingold. Loved every second of it, though all I really remember of it was Gingold singing "I Never Do Anything Twice."
-
I guess my absolutely earliest exposures to Sondheim were the cast album of GYPSY, the WEST SIDE STORY soundtrack LP, the WSS film (life changing, etc.), then the GYPSY film (and soundtrack) on a re-release. Oddly, I can't remember a single live stage production of anything Sondheim till many years later.
COMPANY is probably the purely-Sondheim show I know better than any other. It's certainly the only one I learned to play from beginning to end, to play for a tiny and horrible local production some twenty years ago (fragmentary evidence of this exists somewhere). I sure wish I'd seen the original, or a reasonable facsimile. Saw the Roundabout, my first brain-numbing disappointing experience with the (then-new?) dumbing down of classic, genius orchestrations. The Pennabaker documentary is priceless. I've been thinking lately it's time for a good watching, as it has been several years.
-
RE: the TOD. I absolutely love all of the Sondheim musicals I have listened to and seen. But I'm really not sure what is the first.
I know I've seen: Sweeney Todd, ALNM, Forum, Putting It Together, Company. There are a bunch I've seen videos of and a lot I've listened to.
-
As far as anything actually performed -- that first COMPANY on solo piano; a later COMPANY with another keyboardist and drums; FORUM on piano with another person on keyboard and drums; WEST SIDE STORY, once filling in for strings in a pit; another time on pit piano but doubling some other stuff they needed; A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, piano/conducting a six-(count'em)-player group. Oy! Is that it?
-
Like many DRs here, my first exposure to SJS was the movie of West Side Story on television. In albums, it was Company - which was strangely in the collection of my parents - they had a lot of cast albums, but no other Sondheim. Anyway, I pulled it out at a fairly early age for the cover. Then I listened to it. And listened. And obsessed. And soon, I was grabbing everything the public library had on Sondheim and devouring it.
My first stage Sondheim was the original production of Sweeney Todd on Broadway. By then I was old enough to be able to travel into NYC on my own.; I must have seen the production 3 or 4 times in its original run.
That is nice that he wrote back to you, DR Jrand62. He was known for that early in his career. I wrote him a letter in the early 80's about Follies, and he was kind to reply promptly back. I don't know if that is still the case now.
I can think of no artist's entire corpus of work, other than classical composers, that has given me so much concentrated pleasure over such a long span of time. There is always something new to discover in these scores, no matter how many times you listen to them. They are witty, intelligent, sophisticated, and massively entertaining. And I am eternally grateful.

Something I always wonder about the cast album of COMPANY is whether there's any possibility for a remixing/remastering to better present its complexity -- such as in Another Hundred People in which the richness and detail of orchestration are kind of overwhelmed.

Wouldn't that be amazing? The current version on sale has supposedly been "remastered," but I don't know how much it helps in this case. And you can hear some of those details, to varying degree, in the many other versions on CD. But none of them have that incredible original cast.
-
Got Christopher Priest's latest book THE ADJACENT today. He's my favorite writer. I bought his debut novel in 1970 and I've bought all his subsequent books immediately they've been published - 13 in all, not including short story collections.
-
TOD:
This has not happened to me yet.
-
Greetings from Toyland! I have been to Pearl Art Supply and purchased the tape. My colleague Curtis sent me the tracking number for the paper; it will arrive tomorrow. I've dropped the vocal score at Kinko's for 5 more copies to be run off, and I believe that's all I will accomplish here today.
My goddaughter's mother, who has apparently dropped me as a friend along with her husband, is the first voice you hear on the OBC of COMPANY. In the Making of documentary, she's in a purple minidress. I'm weeping no more over the two of them.
-
Oh, DR MBarnum. You know you'll buy a ticket when Mr. Sondheim's next big Bollywood extravaganza opens on the Great White Way.

bk, too bad you won't still be in DC next Tuesday, when this opens:

Someone on the Times chat box section suggested that PSYCHO would be a good idea for a musical.
I let them know that BK already did it.

Susan - Re Psycho the Musical - This short comic film by Bruce Kimmel's Outside the Box group (Brad Oscar as Norman) might scare sensitive people from showering in the middle of rehearsal halls. The joke numbers from the PSYCHO musical in rehearsal start at 2:10.

Very sad, even tragic story, DR Druxy.
I read stories like this a lot, as well, and I always wonder how accurate the reporting is...for instance, was it truly a therapy dog, or was it acutally a mean, gnarly dog and the angry citizen just wanted sympathy from the reporter (and you rarely ever read an update).
There are always two sides to every story, and then there is the truth. Maybe it is just that I can't imagine anyone shooting a dog unless they honestly felt their life or someone elses life is in danger. On the other hand, it is certainly possible that some officers aren't as upstanding as I expect them to be.
Very, very sad either way. And if it ever turned out that the officer had no real reason to kill the animal, then I would throw the book at him/her!!
-
Good Morning All,
Special prayers for BK for a safe trip home!

Oh, DR MBarnum. You know you'll buy a ticket when Mr. Sondheim's next big Bollywood extravaganza opens on the Great White Way.
His next...did I miss his first? Or are you just pulling my leg, DR SteepleJack?

Saw Cher on The voice last night.
She is amazing. She still has it!
-
She moved a little slower and maybe was lip-synching but so what.
I give her credit for doing it.

The last weekend of this month is Salem's World Beat Festival. I recently joined the India-US Friendship: Salem Division group and they have asked me to help them out with their booth...this year's theme for the group is: Bollywood! (2013 is the 100 year anniversary of Indian cinema.)
Attended my first meeting last night with Dikshant and Kahtyia and have another meeting next Tuesday with the board of directors. I am looking very forward!

Thanks BK for the review of The Company.
I hope Brother Kevin liked it!

BLACKENSTEIN is now available for your viewing pleasure.
I wonder, though, if "pleasure" is quite the right word. :)

TOD: My first encounter with Sondheim was his lyrics for "Gypsy", a movie I saw in 1962 in a theater. Then came "West Side Story", on the LP album (I didn't see the film until decades later), with his lyrics.
My first encounter with music AND lyrics was the movie of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."
The next, and most dramatic, encounter was the cast album to "Follies". Played it and played it and played it and played it. Next came "A Little Night Music", which I love more than anything. Subsequently, I acquired all things Sondheim. He's who I turn to when I need an emotional jolt!
-
Apparently, it is well nigh impossible to put the new board into "Widescreen." ;D

Brother Kevin, Sister Kate just happens to be the title of my next play.

And where, praytell, are the photos of last night's HHW DC repast?

Lupone Piano Mishap
A piano malfunction twice threatened to derail Broadway star Patti LuPone’s show last night at the Leicester Square Theatre. When the piano pedal stuck after her opening number, Don’t Rain on My Parade, Patti moved into chat mode as technicians stripped the baby grand on stage in front of 400 fans.
After the problem appeared to be fixed, the piano made it through one more number before Patti called for an interval and a second piano was hauled onto the stage. My man in the stalls said: “It didn’t seem to throw her. She got three standing ovations.” A replacement baby grand is due on stage tonight. Let’s hope it behaves.
I am thinking that DR FJL could have a ball with this one! :)

Speaking of old emails, does anyone else have the problem of having 100s of emails they just don't know what to do with?
I have never been good at organizing my old emails, those that I don't delete. I really need to get around to making folders for them. I believe my AOL account has a total of 591 emails sitting there like so much fish, smelling up the place.

And one more very exciting (to me) DVD release...this from Sony...TEEN AGE CRIME WAVE! This 1955 films is one of my all time favorite juvenile delinquent flicks!
I interviewed one of the stars of this film, Frank Griffin, some years back. One of my all time favorite interviewees (he is the brother of Debra Paget, Teala Loring, and Lisa Gaye).

Tonight we are doing Act Two....two scenes.....

I understand Larry's pain and/or annoyance at being shined on by friends. As some here know, this incomprehensibly happened to me with the parents of Melody Hollis - just did a complete 180, no explanation, until I finally told all of them to take a hike. The mother wrote me twice after that, and both times I tried to get things back on track, but alas, they have gone to some weird land that I want no part of - and I'm not the only one they've done this with, and Melody is the one who suffers - I had been VERY good to that little child, giving her fourteen Kritzerland shows in a row, an act, a CD, challenging her with harder and harder material - and her mother took it all away from her. Bravo mom.

What I would love is if someone could take the quadrophonic mix of the album (I have a not-so-good copy), and mix it into surround sound! That would be cool!
The original London cast recording of "Into the Woods" was recorded in actual "Surround Sound." I remember reading at the time that that was the very first cast album to do that. :)

Topic of the Day:
The first Sondheim (at all) I can remember experiencing is the movie version of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." I remember (a Sondheim reference!) my sister and I watching that on Saturday afternoons when we were kids.
The first album that I remember listening to was "Sweeney Todd." I don't know why I remember this, but I was in eighth grade and had to do a report on geothermal energy. My mom took me to the local Timberland library (where I now work, but not at that specific branch) and I checked out a couple of records to listen to while I was copying writing my paper and I happened to check out a couple of Broadway cast albums. One was "Ain't Misbehavin'" and the other was "Sweeney Todd." I listened to ST a couple of times and fell in love with it. I fell in love with AM instantly. Both of these are two of my all time favorite cast albums and shows. I've seen a couple of productions of both and they're still wonderful!
The first Sondheim show that I actually performed in was "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." I played Hero and that was just over 21 years ago!
The first live tour that I saw was "Into the Woods." The national tour came to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts after the Broadway production and the whole family went to see it. The memory that sticks out the most was that both Princes were not very good.

Nice multi-media sound clips, DR Ron Pulliam! (I couldn't open the .ram file, though...)

Very cool, DR George, with the original album cover. It's very sad for Melissa, but glad that they had someone of Rebecca's caliber (and experience) to step in.

Santino Fontana, Santino Fontana...
Sorry; I just like saying his name. :)
We love Patti in all respects, so only do fun parodies of her.
But did I ever foist on castrecl the Santino-and-Laura Suite (Fontana and Osnes, that is)
Tune of Stepsister’s Lament (sung by random gay Santino fan or chorus member)
Why can’t Santino play a prince who’ll be / The guy’s and not the lady’s
Why can’t that Beane guy let the children see / The prince end up with me
(bridge)
Sure, it’s not in the tradition / Of the show that they’ve all seen
But was there a prohibition / Placed on Douglas Carter Beane
Why would that Beane guy make the prince prefer / A girl like Cinderella
Why couldn’t Douglas make his passion stir / For someone, well, like me
What’s the matter with a man? (3x)
(Tune of It’s Possible)
It’s plausible, for a great star like Laura to win raves for Cinderella
It’s plausible, for her mate with an aura like Santino’s as her fella -
To also get appropriate recognition, their talent’s getting suitable exhibition
It’s plausible
For the Great White Way is loaded with roles
That on the surface seem full of holes
But top-notch actors grab them anyway
And not just ‘cause they have to eat
And if all works out, they’ll compete
It’s plausible – Tony noms may come someday

Alvin Ing (the original Shogun's mother and so many other great parts in Pacific Overtures) was at a party we went to on Sunday and I told him about the "Chrysanthemem Tea Party" video I had done with our neighbor Sheree Sano. I sent it to him through the friend whose party it was - no idea if Alvin actually watched it, but what a nice guy and wonderful to meet him, and many other wonderful people.

DR George, I guess I'd heard about it at some point but had totally forgotten about that quad LP of COMPANY. Might be gimmicky as all hell, who knows -- but I'd sure like to hear it.
I can't remember what one needed to play those, besides obviously one of those lovely humongous Sansui (or other) receivers, and the four speakers. But if you have a surround system now, how would it -- or could it -- decode those into something or other?
Stupid question: It didn't also take a special stylus, did it? (I don't think so.)
-
HMMM.....I am not sure about a special stylus, but you certainly had to have a special receiver to separate the four channels.....
I am off to rehearsal for Act Two of ANGEL STREET.

I actually have a Bang & Olafsun (sp?) turntable that can play quad records, but it doesn't work. I might have to get it fixed one of these years. ;)
AND, if I remember correctly, I think I have an older receiver that can also support quad turntables.

Here I am, posting high in the sky on the nineteenth of June.
-
Fascinating, but on the last flight to be online for the DURATION of the flight was ten bucks. Today it's fifteen bucks for ninety minutes. I think I'll be telephoning the company that does this with some questions.
-
So far the flight has been very pleasant - a quiet lady next to me. I had a pastrami sandwich and one and a half potato pancakes for lunch and I just had the beef dinner - which looked to me like about three ounces of meat, maybe four tops, some string beans and that's it - it still feels like I ate way too much today.
-
We just hit some lovely turbulence. Hopefully we'll be through it soon or an entire plane full of people will all vomit on the ground.

I love being online in the air.

Great lament, FJL.

Thanks to BK and The East Coast Singer for a very nice evening. I had a delicious Panini at Busboys and Poets, the restaurant the group went to before the show. And I enjoyed Follies very much. It was the first time seeing it live. I've seen the Raul Esparza version on DVD.

Hopefully, they'll all grab their little barf bags in time and vomit in them and not on the ground! That would be MOST unseemly! :P

You should be! You've worked hard the past few days. Plus, traveling always takes the stuffing out of one - or does me, at least.

TCB: regarding my seat for Barbra. It was sheer luck. In London, at the "Ask Barbra" table a woman approached my friends from Scotland (they met on the Barbra forum, and later at a concert in Dublin in 2007 and got married two years later). She told them she was upgrading fans and since I was with them, I got upgraded too. We were in the front row center. Then, two weeks later, in Berlin, my friend Robin (who had met Barbra a few days earlier) and I were in the upper section of the arena , looking for a merchandise stand, when our friend from Poland ran towards us and said she had been upgraded. We went to see the woman (not the same one from London) and she gave us tickets and waited while we got our friends from Scotland (who were on the lower level) . When we looked at the tickets we couldn't believe that we were in the front row again! I'm not usually lucky, but I guess those experiences made up for it!

My memory is not what it used to be, thanks to events of the past many months. But IIRC, your name did indeed come up in conversation at the party, in great contexts of course.
But I did remember to link your PSYCHO musical at the Times chat when the subject came up today. One out of two ain't bad.

Lupone Piano Mishap
A piano malfunction twice threatened to derail Broadway star Patti LuPones show last night at the Leicester Square Theatre. When the piano pedal stuck after her opening number, Dont Rain on My Parade, Patti moved into chat mode as technicians stripped the baby grand on stage in front of 400 fans.
After the problem appeared to be fixed, the piano made it through one more number before Patti called for an interval and a second piano was hauled onto the stage. My man in the stalls said: It didnt seem to throw her. She got three standing ovations. A replacement baby grand is due on stage tonight. Lets hope it behaves.
I am thinking that DR FJL could have a ball with this one! :)
I heard she thought the piano was taking pictures of her.

T.O.D.
My first exposure to Sondheim was the film of WEST SIDE STORY, followed by the movie version of GYPSY. I loved both of them and I loved the music but I never knew the connection with Sondheim. WSS was a Bernstein musical and GYPSY was Jule Styne. When I saw Forum (the film) I thought it was horrible. So my first Sondheim revelation was EVENING PRIMROSE, but I felt like I was the only person in the world who watched it. None of my theater friends had stayed up to watch, nor had my drama teacher, so it was like I had seen this "miracle" that no one else knew about.
-
I have seen a lot of Sondheim shows, some community theater and some professional. I actually turned down the role of Bobby in COMPANY, because I thought I wanted to be in this production (a horrible horrible production) of SWEET CHARITY. The week after CHARITY closed, the director of COMPANY called and asked me if I could come in and take over the role of Larry in the COMPANY production, so I ended up in the show (a great great production), but not as Bobby.
-
FORUM has turned out to be one of my favorite Sondheim shows, but I still hate the movie version. I saw Nathan Lane and Mark Linn-Baker do it on Broadway, and I thought it was fantastic. I love SWEENEY, in fact I think I wore out my video. I like INTO THE WOODS, but I really think they should cut about twenty to twenty five minutes out of the first act. I have had major surgeries that lasted less time than the first act of INTO THE WOODS.
-
I don't think I have listened to PACIFIC OVERTURES enough to judge it; and I don't really care for PASSION, but I have never seen it performed. I have tried to like SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, because everybody else seems to love the show, but the first time I saw it I fell asleep in it, and the second time I just wished I would fall asleep.
-
Gee, I sure hope our one Guest is not Mr. Sondheim.

I must get rid of the 666 in my total. Ah, much better

Hello, all,
First time reader replying, finding my way. Forgive any missteps.
TOD - I fell in love with Mr. Sondheim's work through the album of COMPANY, yet to this day, I've never seen the actual show. I did see the Reunion Concert's only night before it's B'way showing, this one in Long Beach, CA. And I did the show three times, twice as Paul in the original version, once as Bobby with the added scenes and song.
My first full Sondheim show viewing was A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC's National Tour with Ed Evanko and company. By the time I saw it, I was already in love with the score. I fell in love with the show that night, and have been blessed with having worked in lots of Sondheim since.
Oh, and hello to the lovely denizens here.
