Well, you've read the notes, the notes were happy and rang in the month of July, and now it is time for you to post until the happy July cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: GOSSAMER!
-
That's a nice Happy Days picture, BK. :)
-
I was going to post this last night, but I couldn't figure out my own password to my own Photobucket account. I noticed that the HHW Photobucket account is 13% filled. Still a LOT of room, but evidently, there is a limit. When/if we reach that point, I think it would be much easier to just create a new account than to pay for more space. ;) We'll cross that bridge when it happens. Anyway, Here's what I was going to post last night (a little less than an hour ago)...it's a picture of one of my alarm clocks up in my bedroom:

Did I miss it? I thought bk was going to talk about June's posting statistics in today's notes.

My hat is off to you, DR George! I could not sleep without air conditioning.

It looks like the American Idol style of singing is now de rigueur on Broadway. :-\

Good morning, all!
I am off to Toyland to work on a Jerome Moross Ballet Ballad; "Susanna and the Elders," I believe. I have nothing else to report at the moment.
I was not crazy about THE PIANO; once was more than enough.

Good morning, all.
Cool vibes for all. And additional vibes for DR Danise.
I think I'd rather be asleep still than thinking about work.
-
They said it would be Monday again, and they were right.
-
TOD:
I'm sure there are many I can't think of at the moment, but one that comes to mind is Robin and Marian.
And though it's not a movie, the tape of "Sunday in the Park with George" always reduces me to a puddle.

:)
-
Good morning.
Good morning everyone.
Good first day of July.
;)
-
It's too darn hot.
Too hot to be outside yesterday, even in Ventura.

"Ordinary People" always causes me to sob for 15 minutes afterward. No particular reason. My mom is not anything like that!
-
Went to hear the Ventura Jazz Orchestra Saturday night. All music from the 40's.
The Ventura Dance Club was there, great dancers, all in their 70's.
And did they have fun. FUN. :) :)
-
Off to work.
Have a great day.
:)
-
Princess Diana would have been 52 today.

Stay cool today, everyone!

Kritzerland is very proud to present a 2-CD set – the world premiere release of the original film tracks, along with a brand new mastering of the original LP re-recording of:
THE MISSOURI BREAKS
Music Composed and Conducted by John Williams
Well, it seemed like a good idea: Pair two superstars coming off hugely successful films – Marlon Brando, whose last two films had been The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris, and Jack Nicholson, coming off Chinatown and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – add in screenwriter Thomas McGuane, a well-respected novelist turned screenwriter, with Rancho Deluxe and 92 in the Shade (based on his novel) to his credit, and top it off with the great director Arthur Penn, who’d made the brilliant The Miracle Worker, Bonnie and Clyde and Little Big Man. Then hire some of the best character actors working then – Harry Dean Stanton, John McLiam, Randy Quaid, Frederic Forrest, and a fetching, strong-minded leading lady, Kathleen Lloyd and how could it fail?
But fail it did, with both critics and audiences. But thanks to TV and home video, people have come to embrace the pleasures of the film. It looks great, thanks to the beautiful photography of Michael Butler, but even more importantly it has a musical score that just brings the whole thing alive, thanks to the great John Williams.
Williams had already done big, brash, outdoorsy Americana before with The Reivers and The Cowboys. But The Missouri Breaks wasn’t big and brash, and so required a different kind of score – smaller in scale, but one that would capture the characters and the drama as well as the period and the feel of the film. And, of course, Williams delivered a perfect score (albeit atypical for him during this period), mostly composed for guitars, harmonica, percussion, and a handful of other instruments. Williams never wants for coming up with an instantly memorable and beautiful theme and The Missouri Breaks has a beauty in its love theme – never overused, always right. His main title music sets the mood with tense bass notes, and off-kilter harmonica and guitar – it’s wonderfully evocative and haunting. There are up-tempo infectious cues and cues for Brando that are really off-kilter. It’s Williams doing what he did (and still does) better than anyone, and it’s a score that’s completely unique to him.
There was an LP release at the time of the film – that was a re-recording, and Williams, as he did frequently, arranged the music differently than the film, to work as a cohesive thirty-six minute album. That LP release was issued on CD, first by Ryko, who added three bonus tracks from the original film cues – the first time those had been heard outside the film (although, interestingly, those three cues contained no music that wasn’t in the re-recording) – and then by Varese Sarabande, which was a virtual clone of the Ryko CD.
For this CD release, we are really pleased to present all of the original film tracks for the very first time – their world premiere release – from the original superb-sounding session masters. It’s leaner and meaner than the re-recording, and a completely different listening experience. A handful of cues went unused in the film itself, but we’ve included everything for this release. We also are including the original LP presentation but we’ve gone back to the original album masters so we could be at the original source for the best possible sound. So, here, at long last, is the complete original soundtrack cues for The Missouri Breaks. They’ve been a long time coming, but we hope you’ll find they’ve been worth the wait.
THE MISSOURI BREAKS is limited to 1200 copies only. The 2-CD set is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.
CD will ship the second week of August, but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

-
Yes, awful awful news from Yarnell, AZ. We drove through that area once on one of our very early Freedom Day treks. It was a lovely place.
-
Will be ordering the CD shortly.
I only saw THE MISSOURI BREAKS once, at the Writer Guild Theater which I used to walk to and pay one dollar (or was it two?) for second-run double features. I was probably there for whatever else was playing, because all I remember is being bored and/or mystified by it. Sadly, I've heard in recent years that my reaction today would probably be much the same, even though with its credentials you'd think it would be something with much to rediscover and appreciate.
But this sounds like an excellent release and I look forward to properly hearing the score!

Forgot to mention the stats but will in tomorrow's notes, but June was a comeback month for the board and site, but board especially (the site always has great traffic). 2013 until last month has been the slowest in over five years. But May was why I was ready to shut it all down because that was the worst month almost ever, with under 2,000 posts and 258,000 views. To show you just how bad that is for this here board, in June we had close to 8,000 posts and over 750,000 views. That is, in fact, more like a normal month, but I'm just glad we're back and let's keep it that way - 2012 was a great year in terms of stats and not sure why this year has been a trial but hopefully June's busting out all over, some new blood, and the new, improved site and board will keep us healthy.
-
Actually, looking at it, 2012, in terms of page views was our biggest year ever, or close to it. Almost eight million page views.
-
Almost eight million page views.
And the spambots account for what percentage? ;)

Were they possibly there to prevent people from passing? That would be a sight to see. When we lived Michigan a small town near us, Birmingham, had policemen on horses. I still remember the first time Echo saw them :)

I cannot believe I posted that William Norris was in DEAREST ENEMY! It was Charles Purcell who played over 1000 performances of the title role of THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER.
William Norris was the star of BABES IN TOYLAND, 1903, at the age of 33, and his last role was Merlin in Rodgers & Hart's A CONNECTICUT YANKEE of 1927.
I also forgot Helen Morgan in SWEET ADELINE, the most glorious of Jerome Kern scores!

60 years-wow.

Saddest film I've ever seen:
I AM LEGEND - When Will Smith has to kill his dog.
Never saw "Ole Yeller", eh?
LOL

And the word of the day is: GOSSAMER!
And The Song Of The Day Is: IT WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS
(What Else?)
What else, indeed. One of the greats.

Like the new avatar, TCB.
So do I.

Found this elsewhere...it certainly sums up my weekend in Oakland...and the next couple of days, as well!
Gale Storm sings "Heat Wave" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIcpFXkXWZc&feature=player_embedded)
Note the shot of Zasu Pitts ("Nugey") and James Fairfax ("Cedric"). This was from an episode of "The Gale Storm Show: Oh, Susannah".
That was fun-thanks.

Also in consonance with the heat wave out west and in the pacific northwest (of all places!), here is an offering from Cole Porter and Ann Miler:

Thank you. I wish I could have seen more of her footwork.

DR Ginny, do you mean the actual date, or just the year 1953?
Is it even possible to find out day/date for books of that vintage?

According to wikipedia: "First published in 1953 by Ballantine Books, Fahrenheit 451 is twice as long as "The Fireman". A few months later, the novel was serialized in the March, April, and May 1954 issues of Playboy."
I Googled the book title, selected the wikipedia page and the information was therein.

Yeah, it's almost futile to point out one celebrity or otherwise famous person's birthday .... as though they're the only one.

Right. I'm just wondering whether or not the actual day/date of release is known.
-
Wikipdeia has a section that reads:
Publication history[edit]
The first U.S. printing was in October 1953 by The Ballantine Publishing Group. This first edition was printed with asbestos binding. The second U.S. Printing was in April 1991. In January 1967, the Revised Bal-Hi Edition was printed and in March 1967, the Special Book Club Edition was printed. The first Canadian printing was in October 1953 and the seventh printing was in October 1972.[16]
The book has also been adapted into a 4.5-hour-long audiobook.[17]
The novel was released as an e-book in December 2011.[18][19]
I don't know if an actual "numerical date" is findable.

How did you do at the booth this weekend, DR MBarnum? Did you convert lots and lots of people? ;D

It was a very hot weekend, which I spent as a volunteer at the India-US Friendship booth on both Saturday and Sunday.
Despite the horrid heat, it was a lot of fun and I made many new friends.

Yesterday I remembered to take the camera to the pond when I went to watch the fish. After many tries I captured a good school of them.

Speaking of Ms. DeHavilland, her performance in The Heiress is one of my all favorites

Even more difficult was capturing them eating. Some of the fish get very excited, make lots of bubbles & ripples & come partially out of the water. If you look closely you can see the fish on the top left is partially out of the water.

DR SlipShod, we did get a lot of people signed up for Sneha's free Bollywood dance lesson. She was trying to see if there was enough interest to begin regular lessons. A lot of people signed up!
Despite the friggin hottness, the World Beat Festival was quite well attended. We had way more volunteers at our booth then we needed most of the time, so it all become very social for us, just sitting around chatting and (for me) getting to know other members and/or getting to know those better whom I already knew (I am one of the newest members). Majority of group's members are from India (the group begin in the late 70s), a few are Britains, and then there are a smattering of American's.
We only had one tiny little fan in the ten, and all of us were huddled around it most of the time. For awhile there were so many members of our group (either volunteers or those just stopping by to say hi) in the tent, that there was no room for any of the festival's attendents to come in and view the movie posters or see the movie clips playing on the TV.
I am going to suggest that for next year we have all the displays sitting outside the tent, so the social time can go on inside the tent without detracting from people seeing the goodies.

There was one very nice Middle Aged gal that I was chatting with for some time on Saturday. Turned out she was an actress in Hollywood during the 80s and 90s....SEINFIELD, KNOTS LANDING, HEAD OF THE CLASS, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER...her name is Noor and she was great fun to talk to...although she was quite embarrassed when someone revealed to me that she was an actress as she never had much of a career (her words, not mine).
She lives here now and has an agent in Portland, but has found that there is very little work for a brown lady in her age bracket in the Pacific NW, let alone in Hollywood.

I suspect my brain has repressed some of the movies that really, truly, always get to me.
A very short list, then...
THE MIRACLE WORKER.
The I AM LEGEND scene -- I've only seen the film once, but yeah. (I don't remember anything about OLD YELLER.)
And for something that no one else has mentioned: TOY STORY. The first and second films had their moments, but three is a killer.

Now they're profiling Bruno's in Tacoma. Have you ever been there, DR TCB? They say that patrons often lurch into impromptu renditions of the Chicken Dance.

When Craig was born the hospital was out of hot water. I had two roommates, both with short hair, who couldn't understand why I refused to get in the shower with my long hair. The morning I left a nurse finally walked me around to a "secret" shower with hot water where I had a nice shower and washed my hair.

LUNCH IN A JAR:
LUNCH IN A JAR..... Make ahead lunches, totally portable!
Great for on the run or taking to work as well...And you can change up the ingredients for variety very easily.
The arrangement from BOTTOM to TOP:
Dressing
Shredded carrots
Cherry tomatoes
Sunflower seeds
Hard boiled eggs
Baby spinach
DIRECTIONS
1) Arrange ingredients in a large mason jar
2) Store in fridge for up to a week
3) When ready to eat: shake jar, place on a plate, and eat!
You can make any arrangement you want… you can add red onion, cucumbers, radishes or peppers. Always remember to put the dressing at the bottom and the lettuce at the top.

Well, I'm leaving work. I need to get something to eat, but what. We'll see.
Until later!

Yesterday I saw the weirdest thing on my bike ride.
On the bike path (the one on the side of the road) there were 2 horses. And they didn't move to let me by. :)
Even more weird they were police horses. I've never seen police on horses here before. I can't really imagine what they could accomplish. I have occasionally seen police on bikes they ride the bike paths and go thru the bike paths in the park.
Were they possibly there to prevent people from passing? That would be a sight to see. When we lived Michigan a small town near us, Birmingham, had policemen on horses. I still remember the first time Echo saw them :)
Nope they were galloping down the street (but on the bike path). They probably just couldn't move!
-
Fireworks were very nice tonight. My favorite part is right before the fireworks start the mayor gets up on stage and sings the national anthem with the whole crowd. And then everyone cheers. And then the fireworks begin. It is actually quite moving.
-
Nice 80 degrees here tonight.

Watching an early Busby Berkeley movie, "Flying High," with Bert Lahr and Charlotte Greenwood. The numbers are great, but Lahr is really hard for me to take. I don't know if I have ever seen him outside of "Wizard of Oz."

I need the strongest excellent vibes and xylophones - I woke up with a scratchy throat that I'm hoping is just from not enough sleep - I cannot afford to be sick for this show or just in general. I have no time for this. I'm popping Coldeez and Airborne, but the scratchy throat just needs to disappear by tomorrow or I am screwed.
Sending lots of healing vibes, xylophones and marimbas your way. Feel better, BK.

This is one of those days when I could sure use a patty melt.
I had a patty melt for dinner last night, with fries and brown gravy

Yesterday I saw the weirdest thing on my bike ride.
On the bike path (the one on the side of the road) there were 2 horses. And they didn't move to let me by. :)
Even more weird they were police horses. I've never seen police on horses here before. I can't really imagine what they could accomplish. I have occasionally seen police on bikes they ride the bike paths and go thru the bike paths in the park.
um... isn't Canada the land of the Mounties.... Canadian Mounted Police? Mounted on horses.....:)

Like the new avatar, TCB.
So do I.
Thanks Jane.

Yes, I was openly weeping in Toy Story Three -- and in Toy Story Two the "When She Loved Me" song sequence has me sobbing, every time
Steel Magnolias , Sleepless in Seattle, Gone With the Wind, West Side Story, Romeo & Juliet(1968)

Today the hot water boiler in my apartment building was being worked on so there was only cold water for my shower. Although DR Elmore thinks I need one, I just couldn't do it. So I went over to the YMCA to shower.
And 50 naked men ran screaming down the street.
sorry, that was my fault...

Vixmom, was that salad yesterday from Panera?
it was!! The strawberry salad with blueberries, mandarin oranges, pineapple, chicken, pecans and poppyseed dressing -- it is wonderful!

TCB - I like your avatar as well-- something about the cropping makes me feel like I am glimpsing you through a window

I was going to complain about my day at work - and then I heard about those poor firefighters in Arizona -- how terribly dreadful
My prayers are with those that loved them
-
well I better get some sleep tomorrow is another (loong) day

And why should I be so tired? Wait, look at the time. What in the HELL have I been doing all evening?

What this means, of course, is: Good night! :)

And then inside, there will be room for the beds and the cots.

Tell her to go to Vancouver (B.C., not WA)

Oh, I forgot....................
T.O.D.
Pia Zadora in BUTTERFLY
Makes me cry every time.

Now they're profiling Bruno's in Tacoma. Have you ever been there, DR TCB? They say that patrons often lurch into impromptu renditions of the Chicken Dance.
Nope, never heard of it. It is south of Tacoma in Parkland near Pacific Lutheran University.

Oh, dear, I appear to have been sitting here like so much fish, when in fact I have:
-Thoroughly enjoyed the Bradbury program
-Taken a shuttle bus back to The Loop
-Attended a meeting at the Donor Forum of Chicago
-Shopped for gifts at Fannie Mae Chocolates
-Dropped all my stuff at the hotel and picked up Richard
-Gone to the Marquette Inn for dinner
-Walked back to the hotel
-Started packing for our train trip back to Normal tomorrow
since my last post.
Fannie Mae Chocolates!! Thank you, Ginny!

Moving vibes for Bryan & Kate.
DITTO! :)

Finished with my viewing and listening to a new Japanese import CD of one of the albums that made me love show music in jazz - Warner Bros. record Flower Drum Song performed by the Morris Nanton Trio - never thought it would see the light of a CD release and certainly it won't here. But here's the really weird and irritating thing: The first track is You Are Beautiful - imagine my surprise to hear an LP transfer (clearly, and not a good one) AND in mono. I was really annoyed, but then track two began and it was obviously the master tapes in glorious stereo sounding great. So, if that first track's tape version is damaged, why on earth wouldn't they do an LP transfer that a) was good (there Warners pressings on LP were superb) and b) was stereo, for heaven's sake. Even I have a copy of the stereo LP sitting here like so much fish.

Well, time to pretend that I will be able to sleep tonight. The low temp early tomorrow morning will be a brisk 63 degrees.
G'night!
-
Well, I'm leaving work. I need to get something to eat, but what. We'll see.
Until later!
I went to Red Robin and had the Wolverine movie tie-in burger, the Berserker burger. It was pretty darned good. AND I had enough point on my Red Robin rewards card that it was free!! I didn't order a cola, so I paid NOTHING! Except $2 for a tip. The burger would've been about $10, so that's a 20% tip. :D
-
I came home and watched the pilot episode of "Under the Dome." I was going to watch tonight's second episode, but I got distracted and didn't.
-
It's still quite warm here in my place. :P
-
I'm just trying to get to Page 10!
;)
-
Well, since we're so close...
