Good morning, all! Things go from not-so-good to dreadful in such a short time.

On top of my irritation over my mobility skills, December bodes ill financially, and I am - to put it mildly - concerned. It's certainly affectingly sleeping, and it would happen around the time one should be thinking about what  gifts will go to whom. To compound the mess, the reply to my email to the Man from Philadelphia, who can be obtuse and clueless, was utterly obtuse and clueless, more than usual. I'm still pondering my response. How did someone so clueless become so wealthy?

This morning I have physical therapy, but I may leave an hour earlier to make a run to my pharmacy at Lincoln Center before I head back uptown. Hopefully, this afternoon I'll see my super and the landlord's plumber to fix my kitchen leak.  When I get back, I can begin my Encores! work for LITTLE ME. It won't keep me afloat for Christmas, but it will at least keep me busy for a couple of weeks.

Good news about last night's show, BK!

Have a god day, everyone!

LITTLE ME!  Oh, my.  Very interested in that score.

I played it (small production, small band) about a decade ago.  Loved the piece, and our male lead in particular was wonderful.  But it was a nightmarish experience on several counts, one major challenge being getting a clean reading from our student musicians.  We were just talking about handwritten scores?  This was a case in which both PC score and parts seemed rife with difficulties in readability and accuracy.  I should take my copy out and look through it to see if I still think that, and to get back in touch with it a little.

Good question!

Love the original, and at this point I don't even remember what I liked or didn't like about the new version.  But I can say that one of my nightmares was being asked by the director to "take down" (is that what you call it?) (transcribe?) some sequences in the new arrangements.  Oh my god.  I will have to have a few drinks sometime before taking out my notes to see just what the hell I came up with.

In the first revival, the threw out the original ending. Then in the revival BK recorded, they cast only one woman as Belle, which wasn't nearly as funny as having two while one man played seven or eight.

Monday morning greetings!  I only thought I was tired yesterday - today I'm exhausted.  Slept pretty well last night until 2am, then was up reading until about 5, and slept in my chair until 8.  At least I'm now ready for Thursday's roundtable discussion of holiday books - re-read Christmas on Jane Street and the "rest of the story" article I'd printed from the New York Times.

I will watch a couple of more episodes tonight.....

About 3:00 this morning I woke myself and Keith up yelling "NO!"  All I can remember now is that it didn't seem such a horrible dream that I yelled so.  I felt bad waking Keith but fortunately we both went back to sleep.  This is far from the first time I have woken him due to my dreams.  Usually a dream like that gets my heart pounding and I have trouble getting back to sleep.

And I am home from physical therapy. Today the 15 minutes on the bike nearly killed me. I have no idea why.

The other day, DR TCB or JRand63, possibly another, asked who was alive from the FOLLIES original cast. On my bus ride home, I sat behind Mr John McMartin, so I can definitely report he is alive and listening to his iPod.

I've had a bit of lunch, and now I all wait for the plumber and the super.

And begin the Encores! work.

I just watched the MAKING OF THE SOUND OF MUSIC....and I beginning to feel the way DR JANE wrote last week.....seeing the kids in their auditions and sort of watching the process is making me more excited about the show.

.....I just hope they are really doing the musical script and not making a lot of fake build ups to commercials......

I gather they are performing the stage text with the substitution of "Something Good" for "An OrdinaryCouple."" My biggest fear is that it's directed by the vastly overrated Rob Ashford.

Happy Monday, all!

The Kritzerland show last night was such a wonderful evening for us all! Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes and good vibes.

TOD:
I would love to see two young boys have fun singing "Agony"  from INTO THE WOODS.
Other possible songs for the boys... perhaps "All I Care About is Love" from Chicago (or Mr. Cellophane).
"I Met a Girl"  (BELLS ARE RINGING?)

I'll think of more and add later.  :)

Library eBooks.  Barnes and Noble I can do either way but I get them faster if I use my Nook so that is what I use.  For both locations I do most of my searching on the computer.  When the library has something I want I go to my Nook and pull it up from either my wish or hold list to borrow it.  The process for getting books from both locations is really simple, it is connecting that can be an issue at times.

The Act Two edits for ROBERTA have now arrived. I just downloaded them all, and I can't wait to listen to them.

The plumber left me with an entirely new kitchen spigot and faucets. God alone knows what the contraption is called.

I have to go to Toyland tomorrow. I completely forgot!

If it makes you feel any better, DR Elmore, I found my 30-minute basement walk more taxing than usual today, too.  Hadn't exercised myself in more than a week.

If I went that long without walking or excising I would be extremely grumpy.  Of course I didn't have to work over Thanksgiving either.

I figured my 2 solid days of housecleaning counted as exercise, but they were followed by 4 days of mostly sitting around and eating a lot of the wrong things.

The only favor I asked of my friends after my shoulder surgery was to take me for a walk.  I think you and Richard need side by side treadmills with a tv & DVD player to watch while you walk.

Agh!!! Not Rob Ashford!!!! In "So Long, Farewell," the Von Trapp kids will be standing with their bodies facing right, while their heads face the audience and they'll slouch in faux Fosse poses and slink sideways. It's the only step he knows. He did it in "Promises," he did it in "How to Succeed." He must be stopped.

Amazon.com is offering Broadway in a Box: The Essential Broadway Musicals Collection for $52.74.  There are 25 shows, so that is about $2.00 a show!

I already own most of these.  The library where I work bought this set when it was first released.

Watching the "making of" special last week, I was thinking that some of the dance moves in the party scene were NOT in the right style at all.  They had lifts that even I know would never have been done at that time and by "normal" people (meaning not professional dancers).  Even in a rehearsal, it took me out of the moment. :-\

DR George. i saw the original national tour of SOM in 1962. The waltz in the party scene, which has Ashford's swirls and lifts, was a throwaway in the original. Completely unmemorable, although the music, based on "How Can Love Survive" a la the fantastic  Trude Rittman, was quite lovely. The important dance was the Ländler for the Captain and Maria.

Last night I began reading "In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods ".  Based on the title I expected to be quickly drawn into the book, and for the first few paragraphs I was.  Then something happened that was too yucky for me and I decided to read "Evening Class" by Maeve Binchy instead.

Returning to reviews of the first book I saw one reference to what I couldn't let go of but no comments that anyone was as bothered by it as I am.

Some think it's better than the original song.  I never liked the original much, but it's hard to write a romantic duet for a couple whose romance is so low-keyed and secondary. The Captain and Maria could never sing "Tonight" or "If I Loved You."

I once heard a minister preach against the song "Something Good" because it excluded the notion of grace and favored good works instead. I don't think I went back to that church. May have been the Methodist church in Middletown when I lived there.

So it wasn't DR JANE....well...maybe I dreamed it.

I agree with DR GEORGE that the lifts and dancing at the party is certainly unnecessary....

I am hoping they go with commercials during the scene breaks...but we shall see.  And the first couple of scenes with Maria and the nuns and the Mother Abbess go on FOREVER in the stage version....so I hope I can stick with it until she gets to the Von Trapp house.....and yes I know it's Audra MacWhatsherface....that is no inducement for me....more of a distraction.  Non-traditional casting gets into my hair.....what's next?  Unisex casting.....why can't a MAN play the Mother Abbess?

I don't really care that they are using Something Good instead of An Ordinary Couple....it's probably a better fit for the singers they have....  And I hope we get both of the Baroness and Max songs....they are both listed in the CD song list.....

I am totally immune to the dubious charms of Ms McDonald, who's had a good career but who deification, like that of Ms Clark, completely eludes me.

I look forward to Laura Benanti, whose casting puts "No Way To Stop It" back into the range Richard Rodgers wanted.   Yhe last revival cast the wrong voice, but the director of that revival is a joke.

I have begun decking our hall living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room.  Can't do more until I have some daylight, which means Wednesday.  I'll be in Dayton much of tomorrow lunching with the grantwriters.

I went a little crazy on Cyber Monday.  I started buying Bali insulated cellular shades for my house about 5 or 6 years ago. I have lots and lots of windows so over two years I covered maybe 1/2 of the windows.  Well today they were on sale for 50% and I could get 6 months same as cash and free delivery, so I bought all the rest.  It's a lot more than I wanted to spend, but they really do help keep the house warmer and I've been here for 7 years now.  Time to finish the window covering. I can't wait until they get here

From DR Jennifer:
Quote
Why can't you get it from your computer?  It would make sense that you could do it either on your nook or computer (the same way you can buy an e-book)

My original Nook downloaded all the library books from my computer and this one only from my Nook.  I was puzzled by that as well when I first got it.  I prefer the way it is so I can get my books if I'm not home.

When you buy books from B&N do you have the same issue?  I would really not like it if i couldn't buy the e-books from my computer.

When you say you can only download the e-books from your NOOK do you mean that you can only select them on your NOOK. Not sure i'm understanding.
I buy ebooks from BN on both my computer and my Nook.  If I buy them on the computer they are on my nook when I turn it on

That is because your wifi is better than mine. :)

If I buy a book using my computer it might be there when I turn on my Nook or it might take a very long time to arrive.

Exactly!  I was only going to get some of them but I realized that it would just cost me more money to wait. Luckily I know how to install them, so that won't cost more.   They'll be delivered to the office in 3 weeks. This gives me a new incentive to finish the room upstairs....still need to scrub and paint two walls and the wood work. It's my Christmas present to me.....well another Christmas present to me.....

But right now I need to get out the flute and do some practicing.   I had planned to do a lot of it over the break and didn't pick up the flute once   So much for Boo's quiet night on mom's lap, lol

I figured my 2 solid days of housecleaning counted as exercise, but they were followed by 4 days of mostly sitting around and eating a lot of the wrong things.

sounds like how I spent the last four years

I am looking forward to the Sondheim documentary since I have [free] HBO now.

The article in TV Guide, or was it Entertainment Weekly; said they were not interested in remaking the movie, but wanted to present the original Broadway version on film.

P. S.:  I have no financial or artistic control over this production, so don't blame me if they screw it up!

I am holding you personally and entirely responsible for the whole thing... if I don't like it I will be filing a paypal dispute!

Apple just told me that the ipad was the most wished for gift this Christmas.  That must come as a surprise to all those who wished for world peas.

I thought that was supposed to be whirled peas.

DR Jennifer while reading the 2nd Nadia Stafford book I was thinking you might like the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.  Have you read ONE FOR THE MONEY?

No (my mom has read them all). But I did see the movie. :)

I gather they are performing the stage text with the substitution of "Something Good" for "An OrdinaryCouple."" My biggest fear is that it's directed by the vastly overrated Rob Ashford.

I wondered about that song substitution - thoughts?

I once heard a minister preach against the song "Something Good" because it excluded the notion of grace and favored good works instead. I don't think I went back to that church. May have been the Methodist church in Middletown when I lived there.

well they were Roman Catholics, not Lutherans, so it makes perfect sense for them to sing that song

Came home to discover that UPS left my new 40-inch TV on the front door step. I guess I didn't have to sign for it. But they can't leave a box of alcohol without my signing for it. Go figure.

Usually UPS doesn't leave anything. I thought that they  needed you to sign something and put it on your door if you wanted them to leave it.  They certainly shouldn't be leaving a tv.

well alcohol has to be delivered to someone of legal age to drink - but anyone of any age can steal a TV

When I heard Ashford was directing, I thought, this could either be good or as bad as watching a major train wreck, but either way, it's going to be fascinating and a must-see!

Except I'm going to a pig roast that night and will have to miss it.

Stand by, perhaps George will be taking orders!

I will at least be watching it.  The DVD is available for pre-order.

Bless you, my friend. Here's my order.

You're on the list. :)

Be back later!

Does your sister have any idea how fortunate she is to have YOU as her brother?

Good to have a TV and DVD/CD player back.

Listening to Christmas with the Drifters, which arrived today. Santa Claus Got the Blues is really a fun song.

Enjoy.

Oy and vey, what a day.  I had a meal at noon - grilled cheese and bacon, then decided to go to K's Donuts - at one o'clock they had exactly one peanut butter chocolate thing left - I bought it, but I also found out the story of who is buying them all up each and every morning.  It will be in the notes.

Then I finished liner notes four, got them on their merry way, and did half of liner notes five, after which I had to be on my way to my editor's house to see his first cuts of the two Sandy Bainum music videos.  They were really excellent, and I only had one minor little change in each - so those are locked and done and I will post both of them in the notes.  I was there about two hours, then headed home.  Oh, and I picked up two packages - one contained the new book of Leonard Bernstein letters, the other Serpico Blu and Ray.  I put that in to see what it was like and what it was like was defective - a mass of digital blockage, so back it goes.  Of course, thanks to Cyber Monday, one can't even access the Amazon site.  I was intending to watch a motion picture and had started to do so, when I got a telephonic call that caused me to go absolutely ballistic.  I have been so good and nice about making adjustments in our show and trying things that I don't believe in at all - but yesterday I got a suggestion that I could not believe and I said no - via e-mail.  I said it was a number that was working perfectly at every run and every performance and that I was not willing to do anything to it.  And then I was asked again this evening - and I said no again and I mean it.  I would not even broach it with the actors involved and it's completely wrong-headed and on this one issue I'm not bending.  I have made a couple of comprises along the way, and now, I suppose, it's time for the compromise to come from the other direction.  I'm hoping we have no further discussion about it, because if we do I know Kay Cole will not be happy - she thinks it's just about the worst idea she's ever heard and she, too, dearly loves the number as I conceived it and will brook no changes to it - and believe me if you think I'm bad you should hear Kay Cole when she's not happy.

And that's what I've been up to - oh, and I spent the rest of the evening finishing liner notes five and getting them on their merry way.
