Good morning, all! I have much to do here this morning before I head down to City Center. I've got to transpose about 40 bars of the schmidt-Jones song "Thousands of Flowers" from the printed key of D-flat to B major (down 1 full step) because, once again, the arranger didn't do his job of providing a prnted transposition (just an mp3 file; oh, joy!) and I discovered on Sunday that looking at D-flat and thinking in B works for the strings and flutes, but when I get to a harp in the scale of C-flat, horns in G-flat or F-sharp, and trumpets and clarinets in the key of D-flat, my head explodes with too many intervals to distinguish and mentally transpose. So, I need to write a piano transposition and see the notes in their correct tonality before I can think about the orchestration.
So, after this, I must head to City Center to drop off my IRMA LA DOUCE work, talk to Rob about tese Trinity Church concerts, and then head to my doctor for a look at this cyst/abscess/whatever on my chest at 3:30. I will be glad to get home.

I am very curious whiy the reviews on Barnes and Noble all say anonymous. On amazon you have to sign into your account to leave a review. I really enjoyed the first review (not sure who wrote it but i do not think anyone from here).

"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
Leo Tolstoy, "Anna Karenina"
I loved WAR AND PEACE, however, not so much "Anna Karenina". This sounds good but in reality is a bit silly to me.

Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice"

TOD:
"IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES, IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES,".
"Tale of Two Cities", Charles Dickens
I was wondering why it took so long for someone to say this. I believe it is considered the best opening of any novel.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.

Wishing the Vixter, who I have not seen since she was a wee young lass, a very happy 21st birthday!!! You are an adult now...now turning back!

Oskar Werner read the opening of "David Copperfield" in "Fahrenheit 451" while I was ushering the film.
Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.
I went from work to the bookstore as I could not wait to know how this novel ended.

Good
morn afternoon, all.
It's good to be back from the early morning high school musical with nothing to do for a few hours but ketchup, relax, then go out to the house where a few of us HTF'ers get together occasionally to watch new releases in a really nice "home theater".
Actually, I think I'd best try to include a LI'L nap in there somewhere, seeing as how I was so rudely awakened at 5:50 AM by both of the alarms I set.
-
FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS by Hunter S. Thompson:
"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold."
-
I forgot to say what the new release is.
"Oklahoma!" in Todd-AO, newly restored and released today in the new Rodgers and Hammerstein Blu-ray collection. We will also be sampling a few of the other films to see how they look, something that's already highly controversial out there on the internets. :)
-
But let not another moment go by before I wish
A most wonderful 21st birthday to

And I am home from my peregrinations. I've seen the doctor and have a referral to a dermatologist, I've had my meeting with Rob Berman, I've visited with my son Joshie, and i've transposed those 40 bars to B major. I can orchestrate in bliss now.

And they are using some songs written for the film but dropped. So that is why Howard Ashman has received a nomination 23 after his death.

But that is not so unusual receiving a nomination after your death. Oscar Hamerstein received one 36 years after he died and Richard Rodgers received one 17 years for State Fair.
Can anyone name the composer who won a Tony Award 66 years after he died?

On this date in 1636, Prince Frederik Henry occupied Schenkenschans. The very next day, Schenkenbaak was invented.
-
On this date in 1644, farm leader Li Zicheng became emperor of China and fled Peking. That was the first Peking Duck on record.
-
But that is not so unusual receiving a nomination after your death. Oscar Hamerstein received one 36 years after he died and Richard Rodgers received one 17 years for State Fair.
Can anyone name the composer who won a Tony Award 66 years after he died?
It's either Borodin or Tony Randall, who had been cryogenically preserved since 1961. I bet not many people knew that. Put that in your pipe. Drain pipe that is.
A yoke? Yes?
Randall died 10 years ago.
-
On this date in 1660, composer Matthias Henriksen Schacht was born. He was schacht that he was never nominated for a Tony.

But of corpse, he's decomposing now.

On this date in 1988, Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson married. Within the year, together they would cause the burn-out of half the plastic surgeons in Los Angeles County. Not even Grainger supply could keep up with the heightened demand for spackle.
-
BTW, some guy named Hitchcock died on this date in 1980. As far as we know, no birds or showers were to blame.

Or at least a new basement.

Shhh! That's DR Vixmom's Christmas present!
I'm sure she will appreciate never having to soak up water again.
I shall practice looking surprised - I am very much looking forward to Christmas!!
;D

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice"
Greatest opening sentence ever, and one of the most frequently referenced, I'd guess!
Along with "I am born" and "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and "Call me Ishmael".
"Call me Ishmael" is a great opening. I wonder though if it is only so because we know what follows.

Hello, everyone.
Thanks to all who sent me vibes the other day.
-
HAPPY 21st to
THE VIXTER!!
I hope you're having a GRAND DAY!
-
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to DR DRUXY and DS SANDY!
-
CONTINUED STAY-WELL VIBES TO BK!
-
CYST-BE-GONE VIBES to Larry!
-
Except, in this case - a little bug-a-boo of mine. It drives me crazy whenever "man and wife" is used.
It should either be "man and woman" or "husband and wife."
I've always felt the same way.
-
LA is in the midst of a mini heat wave. 90s today and predicted for a few more days. I hope we don't have a hot summer.

I have it
I don't think there's anything that you don't have, DR George. :)
Shingles?

DR Kate:
I, too, watch MR SELFRIDGE. Have you seen THE PARADISE? It's similar, but not so much repetition to spoil it. I think you'd enjoy it.

Ugh. Don't even want to think about that.

TTFN.

Just heard the principal Tony Award nominees. I have got to get to A GENTLEMAN'S GUDE TO LOVE AND MURDER!
I see that ALADDIN received a nomination for Best Original Score. Isn't this the Disney cartoon brouht to life?
It's been expanded and there is a new lyricist, so there are more songs than what the movie had.
I realize that, but how does that make it eligible for Best Original Score?
-
PAGE SEVEN DANCE!!

We have a winner!

The Tony nominations are big news here as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 'All the Way' was nominated for two Tony Awards. It was nominated for best play. We never saw it so I, of course, don't have an opinion.

Because it never played on Broadway?

Happy Birthday to the Vixter!

Happy Anniversary to DR Druxy and Sandy!

I was surprised to hear Daniel Radcliffe was snubbed again by the Tonys. On the other hand I'm thrilled that "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" got 11 nominations (the most of any show). I'm glad they gave a nomination to Bryce Pinkham as well as Jefferson Mays. They were both great in the show.

I'm getting enough for a Broadway show and maybe some pizza for dinner.

Browsing to see what favorite opening sentences I might have missed I found this site... http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0934311.html
There are a few I like and I haven't read the books. I just might now.
-
"We started dying before the snow, and like the snow, we continued to fall." Louise Erdrich TRACKS
-
"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." L. P. Hartley THE GO-BETWEEN
-
I have read this one but didn't remember the opening sentences as anything extra special.
"The towers of Zenith aspired above the morning mist; austere towers of steel and cement and limestone, sturdy as cliffs and delicate as silver rods." Sinclair Lewis BABBIT
-
I have not read the novel but am sure I read the quote many a time.
"He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet, powerfully built, and he advanced straight at you with a slight stoop of the shoulders, head forward, and a fixed from-under stare which made you think of a charging bull." Joseph Conrad LORD JIM
"He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet" is the part I remember and like.
-
Watching "Infamous." I really like the movie a lot. I know it got buried by "Capote," but the cast is excellent and I'm really enjoying it.

Tony awards, pardon the term, is. queer about these things. Yes there are songs from the film, songs cut from the film and new songs written for the stage. So it seems all the songs old and new were eligible.
When Rodgers and Hammerstein were nominated for State Fair they were nominated only for the songs that were NOT in the film.

Topic of the Day addendum: right now, I'm reading Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale" (along with BK's "Red Gold") and this is the first paragraph to the "WT" prologue:
A great city is nothing more than a portrait of itself, and yet when all is said and done, its arsenals of scenes and images are part of a deeply moving plan. As a book in which to read this plan, New York is unsurpassed. For the whole world has poured its heart into the city by the Palisades, and made it far better than it ever had any right to be.

The scenes and images in the book were very vivid. For this reason I am looking forward to the movie.

I'm only halfway through the book and I can't imagine how they're going to condense it all into a movie...or what they're going to choose to be in the movie. But watching the trailer, the woman who plays Beverly Penn is British and speaks with a British accent! The character is born and raised in New York State! What's that all about??
-
Let's move this along.
-
EIGHT!
-
I also want to see the movie, but it only got a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/winters_tale_2014/)...well, "The percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given this movie a positive review." On the good side, 46% of Rotten Tomatoes users have rated this movie 3.5 stars or higher.
I still want to see it.

Hello everyone! I know I haven't been around as of late- hoping to be on more soon with summer coming up.
I just wanted to say thank you for all the vibes and well wishes- This has been an amazing birthday, and you all made it even more so. I would say more, but all the excitement and stimuli Mom has thrown my way today/tonight has left me more than a little tired. So I will simply say thank you once more, for making me feel so loved. Vibes to you all, have a great night.
-
Also, Ginny? The card was so sweet, thank you. It's earned a place on my bullatin (I can't spell that) board next to my bed for all time. Thank you for thinking about me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO VIXTER~`~!~~!!!!!

Happy Anniversary to DR Druxy and Sandy

yes I know I birthed a blonde blue eyed child but by means of contact lenses and cosmetic trickery she celebrated this birthday as a raven haired, brown eyed beauty

Looks like a fun celebration!

Not been a great day for me. Crashed mid-day. Thankfully, I was working from home, so I could just go to bed for a few hours.
And I think I'm headed off to bed for more sleep. Good night, all.

Back from a rehearsal for Li'l Abner. I did get the big missing eight pages blocked so that was good. I made lots of little additions to the ballet, but did not block the remaining page and a half from act two because Marryin' Sam had food poisoning and wasn't with us. He'll be there an hour early at three tomorrow and we'll get it done then.
-
It really was a fun day
last night after she was abed I hung happy birthday banners all over the living room and brought in the bunch of helium balloons that were hiding in the back of my van and left them in the hallway outside her bedroom
this morning before we left for work we called her to wake up and come downstairs - so she sleepily walked out of her room into a bunch of floating balloons and then came down to see banners all over the living room
Vixdad and I had each gotten her a card and we gave her the present.
The we were off to work and left her to go back to sleep

And on that note (D-Natural), I'm off. Heading home and some TV watching...as usual.
Be back later!
-
She had wanted to go to the restaurant where she works for her birthday dinner and we invited her grandparents and aunt and uncle to join us
what she didn't know is that I called he manager and arrange to have a certain table set aside and obtained permission to bring in a cake and a bottle of champagne
I left work early and delivered the good before the restaurant opened for the day and it was secreted away for us
so she was really shocked when the dessert time came and instead of the dish of ice cream with a single candle as she expected an ice bucket with a bottle of champagne, a cake and the entire wait staff came to sing Happy Birthday
-
The tradition at Teh Texas Road house is they wheel over a saddle for you to sit on while they encourage the other patrons to join in a birthday Yeeeeeeehaaaaaaw!

GREAT pictures, vixmom. It's obvious a wonderful time was had.

Page nine? Really?
-
Really? Page nine?
-
Pretty damn good, actually, and I've enjoyed all those first lines of great books. I would agree that the first line of Nineteen Eighty-Four is genius.
-
Been eating some non-caloric junk like low-cal popcorn. Yucky, but I hadn't eaten since noon.
-
We're in that rather ugly period where actors are off book and forgetting every other word - I have never heard "line" called so many times in my life. When I was a young actor, I got off book as fast as I could and once off I was OFF.
