Title: THE DAILY GRIND
Post by: bk on August 07, 2014, 12:13:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were daily and did a bump and grind, and now it is time for you to post until the daily cows come home - they don't want to know from the word grind.

I drink very rarely (I know I know!  from my typing I am sure many of you have thought otherwise)  unless you count my weekly sip of communion wine (we use Manichevitz grape for those who care about such things)

however on occasion I have been known to have a drink or two ... I prefer sweet mixed drinks, heavey on the mix, light on the liquor  such as a very light  whiskey sour, or a Kaluha and cream,  or Fuzzt Navel

I will, when such things are offered at weddings and  dinner parties,  have wine with my dinner/  Again I prefer a sweet wine -- and if dessert wine is offered  a local Long Island vineyard, Duck Walk  has a Blueberry Port and a Ice Wine that are  beyond compare!!

BK  you would HATE  my neighborhood:
the trash trucks are here before 6:30 AM,  the lawn maintenance guys start by 7 AM,  my  house is the bu stop where kids start gathering by 7 AM , and the sound of people  going out to  work start  by 6:30 as people  rush  out to catch trans into the city  for work or to start their commute

In the winter when people have to clear the snow before they leave snowblowers will start as early as 5 or 5:30 AM  and snow plows will run all night long

Since everyone  needs to be at work by 9  7 am phone calls are commonplace

Good morning, all! The alarm rang at 7:00, and I decided to sleep in. I then had a long dream about THE GOLDEN APPLE, with Emily skinner, Judy Kaye, Kim Criswell, and others in the cast. All I remember now is a crew wheeling in a grand piano to the rehearsal. The clck said 8:30, so I got up to find my television service is out, but the Time Warner crews are working to repair it.

I think i am seeing Joshie today, but I've not heard anything from him to confirm it.

Good morning. I am staying home today; lots of work to catch up on.

TOD: My Birding Buddy brought a couple cans of Mudslides when we went on an out of town trip together. My goodness, it knocked us right out. Of course, we were tired. It is like grown-up chocolate milk.

I drink wine rarely. Occasionally I will imbibe a margarita. Most often in a restaurant setting, I will order a tonic water with bitters.

TOD:

I stopped drinking any kind of alcohol in my thirties.  I never had a problem.  I just decided that I didn't like how drinking made me feel.

But, when I was imbibing, I enjoyed scotch on the rocks and an occasional Manhattan.  I never liked martinis.

I think noise at 9am is totally fine. Maybe even 8:30am.  But I also think that noise should stop by 9pm.  I think phone calls anytime after 9am are okay. Although it depends on who you are calling. If you know the people wake up early then you can call them early. If you know they sleep late then don't be calling them at 8am.

I thought I had a luncheon date with my adopted son Joshie today, but we've moved it to Saturday so my day is wide open. I think I will try to accomplish some work on the Moross project, and  - if I finish it quickly enough - look over the Chee-Chee materials.

I like wine sometimes......and a gimlet....some other times.  I don't drink a lot.....sometimes in a social setting.

Right now I am not drinking alcohol at all because I am on a diet....and the body turns alcohol to sugar....so it can put on the weight

I think all campaign, sales, survey, scammer, charity truck pickup, sheriff children's party, and solar energy phone calls should be banned at all times.

I don't think my landline would ring more than once a week if that were the case.

TOD: I enjoy alcohol. Have since I had my first beers and wine at 7. We were in Germany, and it was no big deal for anyone at any age to have a beer with dinner or a glass of wine punch at a party. But then nothing until I was back in Germany a 15. Another lull until college.

In recent years, I have had to give up beer for the most part because of the carbs. My taste now leans toward dry wines, preferably rose' and sparkling wines, things that can be enjoyed cold in this 10-month heat cycle. But wine isn't practical for people who live alone, so I have started leaning toward favorite alcohols. Love a gin and tonic, as long as the tonic isn't too sweet, with lime, or a real martini with gin, vermouth and orange bitters. A real margarita (no sugar, syrup or sweet additive) or tequila and lime. Italian amari, or bitter liqueurs, in cocktails. In the winter: Scotch or bourbon on the rocks.

A Negroni (equal parts gin, vermouth and Campari) is a real favorite. It's got plenty of flavors without being sweet. Sugar just makes me hotter in the heat while a bitter drink is more refreshing. Plus, I love those herbal notes in all three ingredients, such as the juniper and botanicals from the gin.

I don't understand vodka. It's flavorless, odorless and just alcohol. When you add stuff to it, it just tastes like whatever you add to it. So, why add the vodka?

This morning I'm in that kind of good, lighthearted mood that comes from having made a better decision about something -- namely, my weekend plans, even when the original plans involved something I dearly love.

Last year at this time I went up to the small town of Rome, NY, to see the lovingly preserved Capitol Theatre, enjoy their annual "CapitolFest" film festival, and hang around with like minded film aficionados.  (aficionadi?)  (never mind.)  Up till a few days ago I'd been looking forward to returning for this year's event.  But with all the things going on in my li'l life right now, the fact that I'd be so much better off staying around here and making some progress on things that need to have some progress made on them, was weighing on me.  So last night I decided to cancel the going-away plans, the wisdom of which was immediately evident, as though a burden had been lifted.  I'll drive up there later for something a little less demanding of my time.

thank you DR JOHNG, DR CHAS SMITH, DR ELMORE, and DR SINGDAW.....we shall see what we shall see for our tech heavy show.

The director is the light guy from Guys & Dolls and this show is loaded with special lighting lots of FOG.....etc.

When I saw it Monday night, he asked me to tell him what I thought....so I told him it was a good show, but the complaint I had was the same as I had in G/D.....I can't see all the faces and the colors he uses washes out a lot of the set and costumes......

He said at the meeting on Sunday we need more lights.....well we have more lights than we ever have had.....and when we had real lighting people doing the work, we could see everything.

He lights everything from the back, so most of the light goes into the eyes of the audience....

Yes it is some plant....big!  DR SINGDAW we rented them from a puppet place in Vincennes, indiana.....Hastey Pudding.....cost us $1000 for the three sizes of plant puppets, and nobody has really taken the time to teach the guy IN THE PLANTS what to do, maybe he got a crash course in the last couple of days.

I will find out tonight.....I will also find out if the girls are wearing their BeeHive wigs for the finale......I hope so.

So BK , just out of curiosity, at what time of the morning  do you believe it is acceptable to begin phoning and making outside noises... (tree trimming , lawn mowing, conversations  etc)  and at what time of night do you believe all such activity should cease?

Sorry Bruce, I chuckled at this question knowing your response will be much later, at least in the morning, than most people find acceptable on a week day.

DR Vixmom I would not want to live in your neighborhood.  Not that I like noise at 7:30 in the morning, on a weekday, it is the time I consider acceptable.  Keith said 8:00.  I like noise to stop by 9:30 at night.

Gosh I like living in the country.  It will be difficult to adapt when we move.

If I did not like the taste of alcoholic beverages I would not have any interest in them.  I only drink what I like passing on everything else.  To me Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry or a good scotch or bourbon is like a quality piece of chocolate.  Red wines make me sick which is fine as I don't like them at all.  I also enjoy white wine.

My favorite mixed drinks:
A proper Old Fashioned
Mai Tai
Margarita with an extra shot of tequila, no salt, on the rocks

Fortunately I have more control when drinking than I do when eating chocolate.

TOD:

I don't drink often, so my knowledge of liquor is limited. I do not care for beer or wine. If I am going to drink I usually tend towards a simple Scotch/Bourbon on the rocks. I have tried a number of martinis, but find I don't really like them all that much...however, I always had vodka martinis. Recently I had one made with gin and enjoyed it much better.

I have had some colorful, fruity drinks that I liked, but I could not tell you what was in them/. I just know they tasted really, really yummy!

Back in my youth, when I would go out to special interest nightclubs and/or partying with co-workers, a Long Island Ice Tea was my drink of choice...mainly because it got me drunk good and fast! LOL! Now, I don't like even getting tipsy.

Sherry is served plain from the cupboard.  Bristol Cream is a sweet sherry.  Unless it is a mixed drink  it is the very rare (once every 10 years) occasion that I have ice in it.

And the hell continues. I liked the cover art but the Ass Man from Philadelphia did not, and rather than addressing it with me, he complained to New world, and I just saw the new cover that he approved two days ago. TOD - when I was approaching drinking age my Dad said, "If you're going to drink, do it right," and introduced me to the simplicity of Scotch and soda.  That remains my mixed drink of choice, along with an occasional Margarita, Manhattan, or one of our friend Doug's Cosmos.  I like most wine and a few swallows of beer once in a while.  All that said, I am not a frequent drinker and less now that I take several heart meds.

Dad also taught Mom to drink Scotch, a habit that I think has not done her any favors.  I blame her severe osteoporosis and, maybe, her macular degeneration in part on 70 or so years of what I consider heavy alcohol consumption.

Oh, yes, DR ChasSmith, Mom has Scotch every night and I have to admit that I'm her enabler.  In fact, one of the reasons she's dragging her feet over moving to assisted living is that she's afraid they'll take it away from her.

Back from a meatless Cobb salad and a bagel and picking up a couple of packages.  I guess I am seeing a show this evening but it's not too long from what I understand so I should be home by ten-thirty.  Listening to Ormandy conducting Prokofiev - several symphonies and some of the other popular pieces he wrote.  I really love this music and these performances.

I admit I have never put soda into my scotch but to me it seems it would ruin it.  I actually shiver at the thought of it.  Maybe the difference is I would be ruining good scotch were an average scotch is used with soda ;)

I'm sorry about your mother's heavy drinking.

I know what you mean.  To me a good scotch has too much flavor to water down with anything even though I like a good bourbon in an Old Fashioned.

Soda should only be sipped slowly for indigestion.  I think people drink scotch & soda too quickly ;)

TOD:

My drinking preferences are in common with a few others here, but rarely are two people alike on this:

Favorite cocktails:  Martinis (gin, which should go without saying, but it unfortunately doesn't in today's twisted world), Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Margaritas.  I also like Bourbon or Scotch on the rocks, and with soda occasionally for variety.  For me, Vodka only exists for Bloody Marys, and I do love those even if I only seem to think of having one once or twice a year.

Wine:  I love good reds and whites, but don't indulge nearly as much as my tastes would lead my wallet into attempting to pay for.  I don't care for sparkling wines, Champagne, etc.  On New Year's Eve I'll indulge the company I'm with by having half a glass, but however good the underlying wine might be, the effervescence isn't enjoyable to me.  Not to mention that many years ago, I discovered the punishment for overindulgence in sparkling wines to be unfairly harsh.  :)

Beer:  Pale Ales are a favorite these days.

What I'd find especially interesting on this subject are the questions of when, why, and how someone began drinking anything alcoholic -- and the when, why and how those who used to drink and stopped, did so -- only if they're inclined to share that kind of personal information.  And I don't ask it of anyone.

Those such as BK who never started have it the easiest in this conversation -- it was never attractive, there was no reason to ever attempt "learning to like it", and with that decision having been made there were never any of the pitfalls.  And I wholeheartedly respect that.

I think part of my hatred of liquor is having visited the bars my father owned - the people in them, the awful smell - even at his upscale steak house, the bar stuff made me sick, aroma-wise.  And the handful of occasions where I've let liquor brush against my lips, especially scotch and bourbon - well, I just don't understand how taste buds can like that, but that's just me.

I've only been drunk once in my life (when I was 22 and in college...and at my place with friends).  Mainly, I really disliked the feel of alcohol, more than the taste.  I remember as a kid going to church and after an early (my first?) communion, being so grossed out by the taste of the wine on the host, that I ran out of the church and threw up (probably an indicator of things to come ;) ).

There are a few or chocolate or fruity drinks that I don't mind, but I'm not really interested in getting drunk or paying as much for them as they cost.  The only drink that I've gotten more than once is The Rock Wood Fired Kitchen's Lava Lamp drink.  You get to keep the glass (made of plastic) and you can flip a switch under the base and it lights up!  What I like about is most is that you get to keep the (plastic) glass...and I can barely taste the alcohol AND I've never even gotten a buzz from it.  I don't remember what's in it, but here's a picture:

Lava Lamp
A liquor medley of vodka, white rum, triple sec, melon liquer & blue curacao, mixed with sprite and rockstar energy drink, add our famous orange jell-o shooter as lava and you’ll be flashin’ back to the 70′s.

Thanks to all for the Opening Night vibes.  The audience was most enthusiastic, and there were many new people there who then had questions about season tickets and auditions for next year....so that is good.

I also reserved MANY tickets for the next few performances....and the girls did wear their wigs for the finale.....so all is well.

Sorry that the link to the Little House on the Prairie photos did not work....I forgot my niece has her privacy settings not to allow people who are not friends to view her photos.

When are you going to move?

Didn't I see you drink a Cosmo in Portland?

Here is today's Throwback Thursday photo.  I'm on the right, chatting with James Roosevelt, Eleanor and Franklin's eldest son, and my friends Stefanie and Jenny:

I think that was really rude of him to sign his name on your wall!

T.O.D.

I think everyone here knows (or should know) that I don't drink anymore.  I am an alcoholic, and next month (September 14), God willing, I will be sober for twenty-one years.  Prior to that, I drank anything and everything.  The funny thing is I never really found any drink that I liked.  I suppose I drank wine more than anything, but not when I went out, because the serving size was too small.  Better to drink wine at home where I could use a big tumbler.

I do like the taste of beer -  but mostly I drink non alcoholic beer because I want the taste without the buzz

O'Doul's Amber is my favorite

This Prokofiev guy is the bomb.  I'd forgotten how much I love his music - every single piece I've heard today, and that's four symphonies and some suites are aces.

I volunteer at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts as an usher and concessionaire.  Four or so years ago, there was a performer (I never found out who) whose rider contract required that O'Doul's be provided, but the darned performer never drank any of them...they just required that some be available.  Well, after the performer's performance, the Center's people put the aforementioned unconsumed O'Doul's in concessions to sell to patrons AND THEY NEVER SOLD!  Not a single one!  They were there until sometime last year when someone FINALLY decided to dump them ALL.

So, good for you, Vixmom, but evidently Olympia arts patrons need their beer buzz.

;)
