I know what you mean. To me a good scotch has too much flavor to water down with anything even though I like a good bourbon in an Old Fashioned.

Soda should only be sipped slowly for indigestion. I think people drink scotch & soda too quickly

My drinking preferences are in common with a few others here, but rarely are two people alike on this:

Favorite cocktails: Martinis (gin, which should go without saying, but it unfortunately doesn't in today's twisted world), Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Margaritas. I also like Bourbon or Scotch on the rocks, and with soda occasionally for variety. For me, Vodka only exists for Bloody Marys, and I do love those even if I only seem to think of having one once or twice a year.

Wine: I love good reds and whites, but don't indulge nearly as much as my tastes would lead my wallet into attempting to pay for. I don't care for sparkling wines, Champagne, etc. On New Year's Eve I'll indulge the company I'm with by having half a glass, but however good the underlying wine might be, the effervescence isn't enjoyable to me. Not to mention that many years ago, I discovered the punishment for overindulgence in sparkling wines to be unfairly harsh.

Beer: Pale Ales are a favorite these days.

What I'd find especially interesting on this subject are the questions of when, why, and how someone began drinking anything alcoholic -- and the when, why and how those who used to drink and stopped, did so -- only if they're inclined to share that kind of personal information. And I don't ask it of anyone.

Those such as BK who never started have it the easiest in this conversation -- it was never attractive, there was no reason to ever attempt "learning to like it", and with that decision having been made there were never any of the pitfalls. And I wholeheartedly respect that.

I think part of my hatred of liquor is having visited the bars my father owned - the people in them, the awful smell - even at his upscale steak house, the bar stuff made me sick, aroma-wise. And the handful of occasions where I've let liquor brush against my lips, especially scotch and bourbon - well, I just don't understand how taste buds can like that, but that's just me.

I've only been drunk once in my life (when I was 22 and in college...and at my place with friends). Mainly, I really disliked the feel of alcohol, more than the taste. I remember as a kid going to church and after an early (my first?) communion, being so grossed out by the taste of the wine on the host, that I ran out of the church and threw up (probably an indicator of things to come

).

There are a few or chocolate or fruity drinks that I don't mind, but I'm not really interested in getting drunk or paying as much for them as they cost. The only drink that I've gotten more than once is The Rock Wood Fired Kitchen's Lava Lamp drink. You get to keep the glass (made of plastic) and you can flip a switch under the base and it lights up! What I like about is most is that you get to keep the (plastic) glass...and I can barely taste the alcohol AND I've never even gotten a buzz from it. I don't remember what's in it, but here's a picture:

I used to drink a lot in my younger days. I don't drink very often at all anymore, although baseball and beer jut seem to go together. I like a cosmo, or a margarita, or a white wine, or a peach fizz, or ...it totally depends on my mood. I had a scotch phase, but I'm not much interested anymore. I do think a good Vodka on the rocks is nice. It does have a taste. I used to keep a bottle of Stolie in my freezer.

I'm trying to decide if I want to go to the casino tonight. The Hard Rock just opened downtown last week. I went in for lunch and had a really good burger, but I haven't been there at night. They have a blues singer tonight, Carlos someone. the ad says he's the model for the blues brothers. I'm not really into gambling. I think I only went to the riverboat casino once or twice in the last 15 years. They do have some fun rock memorabilia and the place has been packed with people every day. It's weird to go in and you feel like you're in Vegas and then you walk out and you're in Iowa, lol

Talking about liquor today didn't get me to drink any yet reading about the smell I went and sniffed some Dalwhinnie (very good scotch). If someone is drunk I usually don't like the smell of the liquor on them.

I didn't know it was tasteless cuz to me it doesn't taste very good. Same goes for gin.

I had a co-worker once who drank vodka before coming to work. I think the odorless ness was the appeal.

I don't know what my mother drank in private because I never found her stash. If she came down the stairs smelling like mouthwash I knew she had been drinking. I really hate the smell of mouthwash.

She loved Mai Tai's & Navy Grogg's which are both fruity rum drinks.

I just remembered......We were in Jamaica for a work gathering for Keith's company where spouses were invited. The hotel had these incredible fresh juice drinks. I don't know how many varieties of fruit were in each one, only that there was always pineapple.

The last day there I relaxed my drinking a bit and ordered the rum version-OMG it was better than incredible.

DR Ginny--this made me think of my late Mom's best friend. DR Kate and I visited her at the nursing home last Christmas. She was visiting with her granddaughter and her family in the reception room and drinking her beer. Her daughter told DR Kate that the staff keeps her beer for her and gives her some every day.
