Well, you've read the notes, the notes were twitchy and bitchy and manic, and now it is time for you to post until the twitchy and bitchy and manic cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ENCEINTE!
-
First post after BK!
-
And a happy haineshisway.com birthday to our former Japanese dear reader Hisaka.
-
Happy Birthday to FDR Hisaka!
-
bK, will you be telling us what your big decision was that you talked about yesterday?
-
When it's a done thing I will for sure.
-
Okay.

Well, last night, my sister's boyfriend and I went to see Randy Newman in concert at the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. The show was just Randy sitting at a piano and performing songs that he had written (mostly old songs, but a few new). It sprinkled a little bit off and on during the first set and part of the second set, but about two thirds of the way through the second set, it really started raining and didn't stop. People started leaving, and it continued to rain, and Randy kept singing.
-
Eventually, he ended his show and he left. There was no encore...I really didn't expect it. I wondered if he just ended it because of the rain. Then the rest of the crowd left. We had no trouble getting to the concert from Olympia to Woodinville, but on our way back south, the rain made driving rather scary at times. We did pass one crash that had emergency vehicles around it, and a couple of other cars on the side of I-5. That was the worst of it all...fortunately.
-
Even though I wasn't specifically a Randy Newman fan, I really enjoyed the concert. The songs were good, the singing wasn't bad...for the most part ::) and it was just fun. I didn't mind the rain. My sister gave us a couple of very thin plastic ponchos and they helped. The arms of the ponchos were too short, and they went to just below our knees, so we did get wet, but it wasn't very cold. That really made it all not so bad. A great time was had by most!

Erika has arrived in South Florida. Continuous thunder, lightening and of course rain. I thought she would be here later tonight. #erikathestorm

So good morning everyone. It doesn't look like I am going to be able to go back to sleep. Work is going to be loads of fun

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were twitchy and bitchy and manic, and now it is time for you to post until the twitchy and bitchy and manic cows come home.
But you're Alive
Bruce feels groggy and weary and tragic
Punchy and bleary and fresh out of magic
But alive, but alive, but alive!
Bruce feels twitchy and bitchy and manic
Calm and collected and choking with panic
But alive, but alive, but alive!
Bruce's a thousand different people, every single one is real
Bruce has a million different feelings, OK but at least he feels!
And Bruce feels rotten, yet covered with roses
Younger than springtime and older than Moses
*But alive, but alive, but alive!

That's great, Michael!
-
I took a couple of pictures at the beginning of the concert. I'll post them later today. I very quickly figured that he wasn't going to move very much, so I didn't think that I would need to take many. And I'm glad I got that out of the way before the rains really started. I wouldn't have been able to use my camera with all the rain at the end.
-
And now, to bed.
-
Good morning, all.

-
Good morning.
Nothing to report here - all seems to be quiet on the Western front.
-
DR George - I am glad that you had fun and that getting a little wet wasn't bothersome.
-
I love the song referenced in today's title.
I thought DR Michael did a great job with his parody.
DR FJL used to do amazing parodies of this same number.
-
I am still amazed at all the selections available on the East Bay (Long Island) Diner's menu.
-
Have we done "But Alive" parodies here before? This was among my parody documents:
I feel foreign, yet totally fluent
Totally present, yet errant and truant
But alive, but alive, but alive
I feel partly Guy Haines, part Guy Stroman
Half Willy Wonka and half Willy Loman
But alive, that’s the thing, but alive
I’ve got several different screen names, every single post is mine
I loved Ethel’s turn in Gypsy, but I’m also mad for Tyne
And I’ve got one foot in hell, one in himmel
Partly Bruce Willis and partly Bruce Kimmel
Sturdy as a fish
Flaky as a knish
Always here to dish
Alive
I feel Christian, but also feel Jewish
Fit as a fiddle yet sneezy and flu-ish
But alive, but alive, but alive
And I’m spontaneous yet lousy with planning
Half Channing Tatum and half Carol Channing
But alive, but alive, but alive!

Good morning, all.
Got one of my famous second winds last night and didn't get to sleep till the wee hours. So I am kind of dragging right now.
-
Today I have to fertilize. Yes, you read that correctly. Today I have to fertilize. I must open this humongous $45 bag of fall fertilizer, load it into the spreader, and walk it up and down all over the yard around the house and then all over the septic field. The grass here, what's left of it, needs much love and attention.
-
Happy birthday to Hisaka, if you're reading here today.
-
After that, I'll stand by for a call from my best friend who lives in Santa Rosa (Sundays are often our best days to chat), and then I must needs return to Assassins. We don't meet for two more weeks and I'm half done with the prep, but I really want to have it completely done by mid-week so I can just work on running it till it's second nature. Our rehearsal schedule is very tight and everyone must be ready to hit the ground running.
-
And that's the news.
Oh. If there's time later this afternoon I'm going to treat myself to a visit to the local music emporium, always a good thing to do, and see what they've got in the George Shearing bins. For me, supporting a real store instead of Amazon on the occasional purchase is also a nice thing to do.
-
And that's the news. Again. For real this time.
-
Good morning!

Does it seem like some people have started the holiday weekend a week early, because Labor day is so late this year?
-
Under the heading "really cool modern sculpture," the head of Franz Kafka:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTx6O6feHtU
-
I guess Labor Day is as late as it can possibly be, Sept. 7. And then the Jewish holy days start evening of Sunday, Sept. 13.
-
Good morning, all! I have been lazing about, procrastinating and enjoying the morning, listening to a Franck Mass and Berlioz' Five Sacred Pieces.
-
Sunday morning greetings! I am alone - well, with the cat - in our house for the next several hours, which happens very rarely. Mary Linda is in Michigan celebrating her Dad's birthday and Richard and Rob have gone to church together. My friend Sharon is picking me up about 1pm for Deborah's annual tea party at her lovely home in Cincinnati.
-
I had toast with a dab of cherry preserves for breakfast. the expected check didn't arrive, i will have no money until my pension lands in my account on Tuesday, and all I have in the house is half a loaf of bread. It was quite tasty.
-
We had a nice big storm last night-- and not just the threat of a storm (which is what we usually get), and a real-honest-to-God rain.
-
DR George, I think your evening sounds like fun.
When the Shakespeare Festival gave free performances of the musical THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA several years ago, my best friend Matthew and I took my goddaughter Charlotte. We sat next to Tommy Tune, the rains came, the show took a break and then continued. We left Central Park about an hour later than usual, rather wet but very happy that we stayed.
I think that production was the first revival I've seen of a show, where I saw the original production, that reached the same standard of excellence.
-
Today, I am back to my recording work. I will pull some CDs to play as I write, most like TWO GENTLEMEN . . . will be one, maybe Sandy Wilson's hilariously depraved VALMOUTH.
-
VALMOUTH
Which should always be used sparingly when shaking up a martini.
-
VALMOUTH
Which should always be used sparingly when shaking up a martini.
Depends on the quality of the Valmouth.
-
VALMOUTH
Which should always be used sparingly when shaking up a martini.
Sandy Wilson's VALMOUTH, like its Firbank source, is very delicate.
One of the footmen, as they oft do,
Looked very handsome with his livery on, and off, too,
But it was only a passing phase.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the fertilizing is done.
-
Or, rather, I am done.
-
Ladies and Gentlemen, the fertilizing is done.
Such a busy bee!
-
Ladies and Gentlemen, the fertilizing is done.
And we feel barren but also quite fertile
Quick as a hare and yet slow as a turtle
But alive, but alive, but alive
(That song can get addictive :) )
-
Hisaka I wish you lots of roses on your birthday!
-
R.I.P. Oliver Sacks.
-
I must cook before company arrives for lunch. I will return tonight.
-
Ladies and Gentlemen, the fertilizing is done.
I have no response to that.
-
I have great affection for any book or musical that has a character named Jack Whorwood.
-
I'm up, I'm up - almost ten hours of blessed sleep. Rehearsal is at one, so depending on exactly how hot it is, I may jog in about thirty minutes.

I had seen The Manhattan Transfer there two different times. The first time had perfect weather, and the second time was like last night...very rainy, but still a great concert.

Great lyrics, Fred.

Watching a movie called Chappie about a robot that can think and act like a human. Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman are in the supporting cast. It's interesting, but a little too long.

We played at Sharon's funeral earlier this afternoon. We did a good job, and her family was grateful. But it was sad.

R.I.P. Oliver Sacks.
I came across this obituary:

bk, did you know that the LA Public Library has an restaurant menu exhibit from their collection on right now?

-
(That song can get addictive :) )
I agree, DR FJL - but I hope you keep doing these - they are so great!
-
I finished my task and listened to Valmouth, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Virtue in Danger, which has become one of my favorite London cast recordings, if only for Patricia Routledge's "I'm In Love with Her Husband" and "Wait A Little Longer, Lover."
-
Thanks, singdaw!
-
George - Are you in that photo?
-
I am still amazed at all the selections available on the East Bay (Long Island) Diner's menu.
And they're open 24 hours a day and all those selections are available 24 hours a day as is standard. There is nothing in the world like a Long Island diner

Thanks to DRs Michael and FJL for posting their clever parodies.

Thanks, vixmom and Jeanne!

John G - Condolences again to you, and to Sharon's family.
Ditto! I suppose everyone is still a bit in shock.
-
I was expecting the company at 1:00, however, in reality the time was between one and two. A good thing as I was not ready until a bit after one. Now I'm sitting at the computer and waiting.
-
I forgot to mention yesterday that I've been experimenting with gluten-free pasta. I used to LOVE pasta, but had to minimize it when I found that gluten was causing some problems. I recently tried a gluten-free fettuccine. Ugh. Really heavy. Then the gluten-free spaghetti. Not as heavy, but definitely chewy. I bought something online that I'd never even heard of, but it looks rather slimy in the package. Trader Joe's has one with BK's beloved quinoa in it. Haven't tried that one yet.
If those DRs who avoid gluten--Singdaw, Druxy, Dan M--or our resident foodie, John G, have any experiences with gluten-free pasta or suggestions, then I'm all ears.
-
And Vixmom can frequent her new-found LI diner, as she does not need to avoid gluten.
-
Continued condolences to John G. I'm glad you were able to play at Sharon's service. A nice touch.
-
On the hierarchy of pleasant surprises, i put a new great eatery up near the top.

Jane and Keith found several new ones recently, I believe.

I am fascinated by the Head of Franz Kafka.

Excellent photos, George!!!!
-
Would love to stay and play, but I really should get a few things done.
TTFN, kids.
-
Thanks, Jeanne and Fred!
-
And now, I must leave, too. I'm going to my parents' for dinner and visiting.
Be back later!
-
I don't actually avoid gluten, DR Jeanne, although it might be good for me!
But you might start with these brands:

Last day of the pool today. :(
The unfortunate thing is that the weather this coming week is supposed to be high 80s and sunny.
-
Back from a decent run-through - we were in a tiny rehearsal room and the fact that we HAD a run-through is amazing. Sami has been very good about implementing all my notes recently - after we finished, we discussed a few other notes and now she gets a day off (save for her short Kritzerland rehearsal) and we're back on Tuesday, thankfully in our theater.
-
I went to church with my daughter and then had lunch with my mother at the steak house where the Vixter was working .
-
then I came home and puttered a bit then popped up to church to check on my plot at the community garden
-
the cherry tomato plants went crazy this week - I ended up harvesting about 6 lbs of cherry tomatoes
-
So I went back to my mom's because my folks love cherry tomatoes and washed and sorted them there - the neighbor friend who is always helping my Mom was just leaving so he took a big bag of tomatoes, and the health aide took a bunch, and I took some and left the rest there and then just as I was leaving my brother showed up so I went back in an we all visited for another hour or so
-
then I did a little grocery shopping
-
got back home and called my inlaws in Canada, it is their 63rd wedding anniversary today . Vixdad had just left after having spent the day with them
-

I have not heard of any that people actually like. It's like low-carb pasta. A good version ain't been introduced yet. At least not that I know of.
-
then after I hada nice chat with my MIL and we rang off Vixdad called and we had a nice talk
-
I also had 4 nice peppers in my garden plot so right now I have some stuffed peppers cooking
-
Fun photos, George.
-
Had Persian food tonight. My friend and co-writer Bonnie was in town with her husband. It was a fun evening.
We had way too much, including garlic chicken, beef kebabs and an amazing dish that's got rice, chicken and yogurt all cooked together and served with dried burberries on top.
-
then I came home and puttered a bit then popped up to church to check on my plot at the community garden
You know, my eyes totally expected that to say "check on my plot at the cemetery"..... !!! :)

Jeanne, I just came across this recipe for gluten-free pasta, which Lidia Bastianich gave me in response to a reader's question. Don't know if you would ever make this, but I thought I'd share it:

Internet was down, therefore no Netflix. Called. No outages. Really, Time Warner jerks? They said my modem was offline and to reset by shutting everything down? Really, Time Warner jerks? Well, guess what, Time Warner jerks - there was obviously an outage on YOUR stupid end because guess what, Time Warner jerks - I didn't reset my modem or do anything and I seem to be online. Which means it's YOUR fault and not mine.

Wes Craven, horror film master, has died.
Then he will probably be back at work tomorrow.

Loved your lyrics, Fred!

I am glad we finally got to see a photo of George's sister. They could be twins.
-
So after church, I fixed some pasta with yesterday's from-scratch tomato sauce. Then I made some croutons, some thousand island dressing, and a blueberry cake. A nice salad is on the menu for tomorrow.
-
Thanks, TCB!
-
Wes Craven, horror film master, has died.
Then he will probably be back at work tomorrow.
Haha.

An about-turn from the sloppy Chappie. Watching the film version of All My Sons with Burt Lancaster and Edward G. Robinson.
I don't think I've given Robinson enough credit or paid enough attention to him. Really enjoying his performance, even if the movie is somewhat stodgy.
-
I am glad we finally got to see a photo of George's sister. They could be twins.
Really? I don't see it.

Hello, 2 guests.
-
Good night, all.
But first ...
-
Six!
-
Gratuitous Post #151!
;)
-
Thank you, Singdaw and John G, for your responses. There was a time, many years ago, when I would have tried making my own pasta, but no longer. Pasta is often a go-to when there's nothing much here. I'll check out the products on Sing's list and will also try Trader Joe's quinoa pasta. I have also developed a new appreciation for the gluten versions.
-
And what happened to TCB? I wanted to ask him how his injured toe is doing. Tom, where aaarrre you?
-
Wes Craven, horror film master, has died.
Then he will probably be back at work tomorrow.
;D
-
Good night!
-
I'm watching "The Last Ship."
-
When that's over, the series finale of "Falling Skies" will be on.
-

We found out, a bit late, that one of our guest today is gluten free. If you find a good pasta I would like to know.

Jane and Keith found several new ones recently, I believe.
We sure did :). I admit some are not as good as we originally thought.

Last day of the pool today. :(
The unfortunate thing is that the weather this coming week is supposed to be high 80s and sunny.
Sorry. It is cooling down here but I think the pool will stay open until the end of Sept.

I'm pleased for you.

I consider Edward G one of the all time best actors.

We had a very nice time today. This is only the second time we have met Keith's cousins. They are very nice, enjoyable people.
