Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a tale of two pads, and now it is time for you to post until the two cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: TARE!
-
First post after BK!
-
Hello, my name is TCB, and I am a pack rat.
-
No, that is wrong. I am a PACKRAT!
-
My mail stacks up, because I am afraid to throw anything away until I have read it, at least, twice.
-
I am getting better, although you wouldn't know it to see my apartment.
-
A friend had me convinced that I had to shred everything that had my name and address on it.
-
But in these days of the Internet, your whole life is right there on the computer for all to see.
-
Greetings, 1 Guest!
-
Are you a PACKRAT?
-
Well, I guess it is rather stupid to sit here and talk to myself.
-
Good night, 1 Guest!

Now playing: Rattle Conducts Britten. I don't know why I never go back to Britten - every piece I hear is brilliant, yet he's always off my radar. His piano and violin concertos are great, and his orchestral music is magnificent. Now I'll probably have to get the operas, especially The Turn of the Screw. I have more here, but I don't have the energy to go through the top of the closet again, and really I think the only thing I have there is The Prince of the Pagodas ballet. There's a nice set of Britten Conducts Britten - all the orchestral pieces, and then two box sets of his operas - I think those might be just the ticket.

When I was going to college in Bellingham, WA, a bunch of us in the music department got to go to the final dress rehearsal for Vancouver Opera's production of Britten's The Turn of the Screw. I had never heard of the opera or the story but I had heard of Benjamin Britten. It was (and still is) one of the most incredible theatical experiences I have ever experienced. It was absolutely riveting. It was a very sparse setting, but it worked so well.

And I'm back from seeing "Dunkirk (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5013056/reference)" in IMAX. WOW! It was almost like watching a documentary. The visuals were abolutely stunning and so realistic. The dialogue was very spare and almost incidental. There really wasn't a story. It was just about this one incident during World War II...fictionalized, of course. But very well done.

It has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dunkirk_2017).
-
Tonight, I'm finally able to usher again for Harlequin Productions' (https://harlequinproductions.org) First Date. I saw it on their final preview/volunteer appreciation night and I thought that it was great then, so I imagine that it's even better now.
-
But now, I'm going to bed and I get to sleep in!
Havd a good day, all!
-
First East coast post!
-
Is it really not 6 a.m. yet?

The TOD: If something can be easily gotten on the internet somewhere, I have no qualms about throwing it out. But if it can't be recreated on the net or elsewhere, i tend to have a hard time throwing papers and keepsakes like that away.
-
Good morning, all!
-
The laundry is in the washers. It's been so long since I've been to the basement, it's like another country.
-
I dreamed we were recording The New Yorkers. I sure wish it would happen.
-
Once the laundry is finished, i am back to this drum part. My goal is to Fed Ex it on Monday.
-
My favorite Britten operas are The Turn of the Screw and Albert Herring, but I think the only ones I find really difficult to like bcause of their astringency are the three Church parables - Curlew River, The Prodigal Son, and The Burning Fiery Furnace - and Death in Venice. I've tried, George, I have tried.
-
Good morning, all.
-
When we did Albert Herring at school, I played piano in the pit. I wish I had a recording of that. Not for me, for all the reasons; I really wonder what that whole thing sounded like, stage and pit alike.
I don't think I've even listened to my Britten recording of that piece since those years. That needs to be rectified.
-
Britten's version of The Beggar's Opera is still my favorite version of this difficult comedy. I was very proud of my 1979 production, assisted by our DR Ginny.
Here are two production shots.

And to the basement for Round Two!
-
I just remembered we did Turn of the Screw, too. I have almost no memories of that one except for playing celesta from backstage. Wait, am I right about that? Must be...

There's a big piano part as well, DR ChasSmith. Did you play both piano and celesta? You shoulda been in the pit with the other players.

This is so weird, how I don't remember. Maybe someone else played it. Damn weird.

Damn it to hell, I'll have to see if I have that Screw program to solve this mystery. But I don't think I saw it last time I went through that stuff.

Diana Montague, my Aunt Minnie on the Roberta recording, is the housekeeper Mrs Grose in this production of The Turn of the Screw.
-
I think I have that DVD.
-
2/3 of the laundry is finished.
-
I just realized: we have two recently empty apartments, one was rented by an elderly man now in a nursing home and one by a young lady who moved elsewhere. The landlord cannot rent these apartments while the elevator is not working.
-
T.O.D.
I'm not really a "pack rat," though I am careful of the things I dispose of. More than once, I've found I'd gotten rid of something only to have to replace it later.
-
I would like to see The Nutcracker on Mercury.....perhaps the ballerinas would wear asbestos toe shoes.
-
Good morning, all.
-
We watched THE BURGLAR with Dan Duryea and Jayne Mansfield last night. I'd never seen it before.
It was okay; not great. It had some interesting aspects to it, but the film was over-scored to the point where you had trouble hearing the dialogue, and one of the secondary actors thought he was performing in a theater.
It was one of those scripts that I would have loved to have gotten my hands on before filming. The story needed focus.
-
I prefer not to think of myself as a pack rat. I merely tell myself, I am not a minimalist.
-
I am still searching for the car title and to find it, I've cleaned out the bottom of my closet, which is sort of a storage/dumping area. I'm set to get rid of more than half of what was down there. I need a paper shredder first.
-
The incident with the sound equipment that MR BK writes about in the notes makes my blood BOIL......
At one time we were doing VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM in the basement level theatre and were having a very successful run. Upstairs in the main theatre, they were rehearsing that hideous gay play that included a lot of Maria Callas music.....The Lisbon Traviata.....
Of course that idiot director thought his production was MUCH MORE important than ours. He kept taking the tape deck from the booth downstairs so he could play his stupid music during rehearsal. He would also rehearse the noisiest scenes he could during our show....
For one of our performances, he hadn't even returned the tape deck.
I still hate him for the things he did and said.....I hope he is dead.
-
I think the physical therapy has helped. The exercises are certainly effective. But there's still pain in the hip.
-
I live by the theory. "I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it".
In fact I have a button with that quote.....
In a box....
Somewhere....
I'm not a pack rat , I'm a collector and my house is just too small
-
I am somewhat of a pack rat. As DR DRUXY wrote.....I am certain when I throw something away...finally....I will need it. It has happened more than once.
I do plan a complete cleaning this fall when my room is repainted - we shall see.

Today is Vixdad's birthday and we are about to leave for his birthday surprise

In fact, I must archive this wonderful post.

The sad verdict is in: that program is long gone.

Yes. And Rupert Holmes should write it.

I'm taking it very easy today. Got a lot of movies to watch, naps to take, books to read.
-
I got to disc 32 of 34 in Don Quixote, and it expired. The library won't let me renew it. There's a reservation on it. I have a copy of the book, but the translation is different. Will try to finish reading it, but it all seems so strange.

The laundry is put away. That's a big relief.

I was thinking those twits from EVAN HANSON should try.....to write....that musical.....

Happy Birthday to VIXDAD!

Saturday morning greetings! Today I have some art supply shopping to do in preparation for StampawayUSA (http://www.stampawayusa.com/) in 2 weeks. Also have to check in on Mom. Her nurse called last night about another fall she took getting from her wheelchair to her couch.

I do not remember your absence at all.
Keep an eye out for any info on that Labor Day Carmon DeLeone concert. I Still want to get back to Ohio for it.

Actor John Heard has died.

Ralph Fiennes is pretending to speak Russian in this Two Women movie. And he's been dubbed, not very well.
-
I am glad DR TCB likes warm apple juice.

I'll stick with with the guy who's already written it, albeit on a slightly different level in the Pina Colada Song.

Elmore, loved the photos. Very Hogarth-like.

That's two heads-ups I've had on this on two sites in the past five minutes, so I guess the universe wants me to see it! I am very fortunate to have one of the original 70mm IMAXes not too far from me here in Norwalk, CT, and I'll be getting down there to see it soon.
-
We will just see it at our local theater and miss out on the IMAX experience.
-
Good afternoon!

Like DR vixmom, my place is just too small for my possessions.

It's laundry day here too, DR elmore!

Happy Birthday to vixdad!

I found this article on the filming and accuracy of the movie.

It's getting very windy. Apparently rain is coming.

-
Hello, everyone.
-
I am definitely a pack rat. A pack rat trying to be a minimalist. (Small apartment.) An interesting experiment.
I have learned not to throw away a single draft on writing projects until the final project is COMPLETED.
As for everyday stuff, how do I know what I'll need in the future? There are some cases where if there's any doubt, I keep it. Tax stuff, for instance.
As to books, that's a tough one. There was a time when I'd NEVER throw out any books. I love books. But real estate is too expensive today to keep everything. I found a library nearby that accepts book/CD/DVD donations. (Not all of them do, which surprised me.) I now periodically weed through my books and donate. I try many new authors and few rate additional purchases. Those are donated.
-
I also hate waste. And there is SO MUCH of it! I hang onto many things that others would toss because there's a good chance that I'll need it. (Really!)
-
And then there's the stuff that you weren't trying to save--you just haven't had the time to go through it yet. AKA the Accumulation. Ah, yes.
-
The laundry is in the washers. It's been so long since I've been to the basement, it's like another country.
:)
I'm very glad to hear that the elevator is working again and that you can do your laundry. And to make your life easier in general.
-
I just realized: we have two recently empty apartments, one was rented by an elderly man now in a nursing home and one by a young lady who moved elsewhere. The landlord cannot rent these apartments while the elevator is not working.
It's been a costly episode for your landlord.
-
I think the physical therapy has helped. The exercises are certainly effective. But there's still pain in the hip.
I'm glad to hear it's helping. Traditional PT doesn't help everyone. You may want to take a look at Ming Chew's THE PERMANENT PAIN CURE. He's a PT who wasn't helped by traditional PT, but found other ways to address his pain. I use many of the suggestions in his book, which I learned the hard way because PT didn't help me.
-
I'm taking it very easy today. Got a lot of movies to watch, naps to take, books to read.
That sounds heavenly.
Enjoy your day!
-
I, too, liked DR Elmore and DR Ginny's production photos very much.
-
DUNKIRK is getting a lot of press and great reviews. Sounds like a must-see movie.
-
Time to get busy again.
TTFN.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep.
-
Seems like three times a week now the Internet goes down in the middle of the night and then the router can't find the modem and I have to unplug stuff in the morning and get it working again. The problem is, when Spectrum does this crap no back-ups occur, and Netflix doesn't work and takes a while to find the server after I turn it on - really irritating and I think the next time it happens I will give them a call.
-

I am, except the two movies so far are less than perfect. The Sense of an Ending had great performances from Jim Broadbent and cast, but the script was irritating. Two Women has wonderful scenes of 19th century upper class life and a great story, but the sound (everyone's dubbed over like an Italian movie and their voices seem to be coming from off screen) is so distracting that I'm focusing too much on the subtitles and not the actors.

With only 2 discs to go, I'd keep it until it's finished and pay the overdue fines. Librarian advice...

Good advice, or you could burn your own copies of the last two discs, or at least rip them to MP3 files. There are options. :)

Thanks, DR JRand. She has no memory of falling last evening and her nurse Angie says her blood pressure is stable and she cleaned her plate at lunch. Also, she's had a perm since I saw her last Sunday and looks a lot better.

Actually, I'm not a big sci-fi fan myself, but this one is fun.

I couldn't. It was an electronic checkout. Otherwise, I'd have followed suit.
I just finished read the book. It was hard to get the reader out of my head, even though the translations were so different.

Does an audio eBook work the same as a regular eBook? As long as you shut down the internet connection they can't take back your eBook.

I don't think so. It kept track of how many days were left and told me it was expired. That's it. It was gone.
Perhaps I just don't know how to turn off the Internet on the phone.

True, but if it's on a device like a phone, he probably couldn't have kept the connection disconnected long enough to finish the rest of the audio book. If he had it on something like an iPod or other non-Internet or wi-fi enabled device, then it wouldn't be a problem.

DR George, thanks for explaining.

I am lucky I can work off of Keith's account as well as mine. Sometimes I set it up so the next person to get the book is Keith's account, then I can check it out immediately if the book expires.

John, do you have the option to get library cards from other library systems in your state? We have agreements with other libraries where Timberland patrons can get library privileges, including access to their OverDrive collections! If they also have the same titles (and they're available), you could finish it from the other library's copy. Also, you could get titles that your library might not have purchased, but another library did. It's quite a deal!
-
And Jane, now that you live in Washington, your library might allow you to access Timberland's collection!

You can get other library cards -- for a fee. I think it's $15 for San Antonio for a year. Don't know what it would be elsewhere.

Watching Julie Taymor's version of The Tempest with Helen Mirren as Prospera. I'm not thrilled with the first half hour.
-
Kay Cole dropped by for a visit and brought me a DVD of our show.
-
Been listening to the Boulez Mahler - through the fifth symphony. This is a mighty strange set, but there's much to enjoy - not everything works for me, but the music is just so amazing.

TOD:
I used to be the opposite of a pack rat and threw away a lot of sentimental stuff I wish later I hadn't (like all my junior and high school year books). Then I bought a house and the lid sort of blew off that whole mentality. Now we have so much stuff I dread the day we'll have to move. I wouldn't say we're packrats per se, but it's just the natural accumulation of stuff after having lived in a house for more than ten years. And there's so many things we buy, like electronics, that come with extra cables and stuff we don't need, but I feel compelled to save them all. And if by some crazy chance I actually needed one of those cables some day, I wouldn't know I had it, and I'd probably go buy one anyway, so I really should just throw all the cables away.

Is there a musical in this?
http://www.unitednews.org/lexington-sc-man-horrified-booking-prostitute-wife-arrived/
Gee it worked out so well in the pina colada song
-
I was thinking those twits from EVAN HANSON should try.....to write....that musical.....
I'll stick with with the guy who's already written it, albeit on a slightly different level in the Pina Colada Song.
This why you read all The posts before posting

I think I have only once looked at my high school yearbooks since graduation -- and that was to show someone a picture of the singer Joan Osborne. I worked on them in junior and senior years, and I know them all too well to look back at them. But I have kept them.

The surprise worked quite well
-
Well, I need to go now. I'm ushering for First Date again.
Be back later.
-
I started telling Vixdad about a bus tour they have where they have street performers along the way
-
Then we had brunch and walked through a street fair and told him that he bus was at. 2
-
Then we walked past the theatre and as we got to the end of the line I said it's too hot for a bus tour let's watch the show instead
-
He loved it
-
We had brunch at Lillies where we had our HHW brunch in April
-
Then we went back for dinner
-
I tried to upload photos but photobucket wouldn't let me upload to the HHW account. It wanted me to confirm the email address which of course I don't have and even if I did I couldn't access the confirmation code
-
Thank you all for the Vixdad birthday wishes

Vibes for Ginny ...I am sorry about Your mom.. It's not easy
-
And Jane, now that you live in Washington, your library might allow you to access Timberland's collection!
Thanks for the suggestion. I am still able to use the Ashland library, also with two accounts. I am very impressed with the Vancouver collection. Maybe next time I can't find a book at either library I will ask you if Timberland has it, if so then I would peruse a card there :)

Thank you all for the Vixdad birthday wishes
I am glad you both had a nice day.
-
Page six? Really?
-
Watching Sweet Adeline. The sound is great, the music sublime, the print could be better.

Thanks, DR Vixmom and others. It's NOT easy - in fact, it's the most difficult thing I've ever been through...
-
But this evening I cooked us a nice dinner, then colored with some fun new pencils and listened to The Unsinkable Molly Brown on my iPod. Just finishing a glass of wine and feeling quite mellow.

DR Vixmom, did I miss what show you saw?
-
TOD - we've been in this house for 29 years, so there's quite an accumulation. But we did learn 3 years ago, when readying the upstairs for Rob and Mary Linda, that we can purge when we have to. In fact, just this week, I pitched most of my grant writing stuff because I needed the shelf space for art stuff.
-
Good night, all.
-
I am a hoarder, however, moving forces me to let go. This last move more so than ever going from a house with loads of storage room to our condo.
-
I still have stuff Keith would like to see gone, such as my rock collection, I refuse to let go.
-
Finished with my viewing and back to listening to Mahler.
-
Good evening!
-
Happy (now) Belated Birthday wishes to Vixdad!
-
Happy Elevator vibes to DR Elmore!
-
Great photos, Elmore.
-
Ginny, I am so sorry about your mother.
-
I guess I will stay until the new notes are posted.
-
Direct TV's signal has been down since 7:30 p.m.
-
Very rare situation with Direct TV.
-
Yes, you simply must stay. It's just done.
-
Listening to Tcherepnin - a ballet - wonderful music - this guy is the bomb, as the kids are saying again.
-
Reading readers' comments on Mahler symphonies - these pedants act as if theirs is the only opinion, that they have the only knowledge - it is to laugh. So pompous. I swear, if we could do a little blind test - none of them can listen to Mahler for a year, then we get them in a room and play various versions of symphonies and see which they choose as best. My guess is they'd choose the ones they say they hate. I love the ones that say, "But Mahler has very definite markings in the score" - so you know they're listening with their eyes rather than their ears - not a good idea. And hey, playwrights put all sorts of character and stage directions in plays and musicals - any smart director will be creative and not necessarily be slavish - that's what art is. Popular songs have tempo markings galore, but so what? I've done tons of arrangements and switch things up all the time. But boy, if Mahler wrote "not too fast" and someone goes a little faster than "not too fast" the world ends.

I watched the DVD of THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER this evening. I enjoyed the, almost, word-for-word of the play production. I liked Monty okay, but I honestly think I was better.
-
I know we cut the penguins and the octopus, but the rest of it was all there, just as we rehearsed it.
-
I like to think that I was a bit more likable than Mr. Woolley.
-
Perhaps that was what Jane disliked about his performance.
-
One more post.

I have no doubt that you were better.
-
And, of course, the film points out why I can't do the show now. Sherry has to be able to walk in the last scene, and to walk out of the house at the end of the show.
-
It is very muggy here this evening.
-
It is supposed to be warmer for the next three days.
