Title: BACHIANOTES
Post by: bk on November 18, 2020, 12:27:39 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Bach-like and had many fugues, and now it is time for you to post until the Bachianacows come home.

I should go to my pharmacy this morning and pick up my meds, but I have no urge to head out into really chilly weather.  The weather forecast for tomorrow is warmer - 48 F - so I may just wait till then.

DR John G, if you have not seen James Lapine's Impromptu, it's a very funny movie about Chopin.

Lapine was such a weird film director. Impromptu is fun. Life with Mickey has its moments  — and a gorgeous Stephen Schwartz-Alan Menken song — but it’s not wholly successful. Cousin Bette is atrocious.

Last night I didn’t know what I wanted to do or watch, and I turned the TV on to see what was playing on TCM while I thought about it. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre had just started, and I left it on while getting some food. It’s one of those classics I’d taken for granted throughout the years, and the last time I really watched it could have been as far back as the late 1970s at the revival houses in L.A. I watched for a few minutes and realized I wasn’t much recognizing the dialogue, so I watched a little more and found myself totally hooked. I hadn’t yet actually committed to watching so I kept getting up to do whatever in the kitchen, etc., but every time I sat back down to whatever situation they were in now, I once again found I couldn’t look away. It was that gripping. By the time it was over, I was practically declaring it one of the all time masterpieces...which of course it is...of drama, adventure, and even great suspense. And I hadn’t even been in the mood for it. Just goes to show you.

My dreams are coming back to me. First part was another incarnation of my former workplace, with most of the elements not making much sense, but one did. That morphed into me taking a cab, I think to the airport, but where we were in Danbury made no sense except that that location happens to have been near where Connecticut Limo had a stop many years ago. Then I was paying and tipping the driver, while what might have been my reason for travel was sort of overlaid onto the moment, having to do with the need to redo a bunch of work on one project that we'd done a few years before. I'm sure that last sentence made no sense at all, never mind the rest. Oy!

And the word of the day is: EGRESS!

When PT Barnum opened his museum. He had a lot of signs that said This Way to Thumb, This Way To Joice Heath etc. He had one that said This Way to The Egress.  People would go through a door and find themselves outside. If people wanted to go back in they were forced to pay another admission.

This is funny.  We have an exit door near our side of the building we use all the time.  It says "egress only".  I have had to tell a few people that means it is ok for them to exit through the door.

Well, this is interesting.  I'm listening to the German cast recording of Tschitti Tschitti Bäng Bäng, and it's different than the London cast recording.  This doesn't have the child catcher's song, "Kiddy-Widdy-Winkies," but they added back "Du wundervoller Mann," which is a version of "Lovely Lonely Man."  But in the German production, this song is in the second act.

I truly don't know if I ever saw No Way to Treat a Lady. But I'm definitely going to. A whole lotta 1968 New York? Are you kidding? You could say the movie sucks and I'd still watch it for that.

Too bad about that Blu-ray. But I don't want to pay to import that thing anyway. For now I'll make do with a DVD or maybe even just watch it on Amazon Prime for three bucks.

Oh wow it was cold out today. I was visiting outside with my nieces (we are not allowed to visit inside). They got cold so they went in and we talked thru the glass beside their front door. It was actually not bad. Our faces were so close and my older niece mentioned that we had not been that close since March.

Good Afternoon - Well, it was bound to happen, but a student tested positive for COVID.  So, all the kids in that cohort - plus 4 adults that have had exposure to the student - are quarantined for 2 weeks.  Luckily, distance learning can still happen.  However, that puts me in a classroom to oversee a 6th grade cohort in the afternoon and keeps me at school until 3:30pm or so.  I usually leave around 2:00pm.  Anyway, "All Hands of Deck" is our motto this year, and it's proven to be an important one.  I can go wherever I'm pushed to go, and do so without a word said about it.  We all must help out.

A transcription disc was a disc made as the broadcast was happening live, as a record of the show and for outlets that couldn't carry it live - same as kinescopes of live broadcasts from the Golden Age of TV.

I don't know why, but I started watching a Criterion Eclipse series of Yasujiro Ozu Silent Crime Dramas this week. The first, That Night's Wife, was good but somewhat melodramatic. The second, Walk Cheerfully, was strangely wonderful. It was about a hoodlum who falls in love with a poor woman and decides to go good. Trite plot, but there were so many unexpected scenes that you just got swept up in it. The hoods had their own way of communicating, usually in the form of choreographed movement. But there are also just wonderful shots of feet tapping together that made you wonder what universe you were watching.

I'm looking forward to the last of the series, Dragnet Girl, maybe Saturday.

I started both The Midnight Library and the new Michael Connelly, The Law of Innocence, today. Both intriguing. i wonder which one I'll finish first.

And I am sure very different.  My ETA at my libraries for the Connelly book is 2-3 weeks. I really don't see how you can read these two books at the same time.

I am glad you are finding The Midnight Library intriguing

Library is shorter. But that isn't always a draw.

I am guessing Connelly's book is more suspenseful making it more urgent to finish.

On the other hand not sticking with the Library could interrupt the flow of the story ;)

I figured why not use that, so I made up 1 cup, which I folded into the soup. The flavor was wonderful.

It sounds better than pasta to me.

Well, the couscous drank up every last drop of broth in it. I had to add more liquid from the garbanzos, which I thankfully had set aside.

:))   Just like the first time I cooked using barley. :))

For some reason, they had celeriac in tonight. They didn't have that earlier this week. So I grabbed one to try a soup that Jane would hate.

I wouldn't taste it to find out if I hated it ;)

Again, not for Jane.

Growing up the only place I saw hazelnuts was in mixed nuts and sometimes whole inside of a fancy chocolate.

Broadway World - Seattle is doing their annual awards voting online.  Since there was a scant amount of theater this year, they are doing their awards for the decade!

The Tacoma LittleTheatre production of A CHORUS LINE has been nominated for Best Musical of the Decade - Non-Equity.  The show had just opened to almost unanimous praise when it was forced to close because of the pandemic.

I went to both Fred Meyer and Costco tonight after work.

Other than Costco's more obvious signs for mask wearing, everything seemed pretty normal, shopping-wise.
