Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of my close personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, and now it is time for you to post until the Sondheimian cows come home - they're currently singing their favorite Sondheim song, Send in the Cows.
-
And the word of the day is: COMMENSURATE!
-
Thanks for writing about your remembrances, BK. It's always nice to learn about things from people who actually knew him.
-
Topic of the Day:
Shows (or movie) that I've actually seen and love (in alphabetical order...as always):
Assassins
Company
Dick Tracy (songs for the movie)
Follies
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Gypsy
Into the Woods (stage version)
A Little Night Music
Pacific Overtures (seen on video only)
Passion
Sunday in the Park with George
Sweeney Todd (love the stage version only)
West Side Story
-
Scores that I love (but don't necessarily love the show...but don't dislike, at all...just don't love):
Evening Primrose (made-for-TV)
Merrily We Roll Along
-
Scores that I like but only know from recordings:
Anyone Can Whistle
Bounce
Do I Hear a Waltz?
The Frogs
Road Show
Saturday Night
-
The one Sondheim show that I've actually been in so it holds a special place in my theater heart:
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (I played Hero)
-
;D
-
Today, I have no plans...that I can remember...so I plan to do nothing, unless I hear otherwise. ::)
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I've been having strange nights of sleep lately, like going to bed at 9:00, sleeping soundly, walking up in what I think is the middle of the night and finding the clock says it's 12:04.
-
I am hoping to have Thanksgiving dinner with friends tonight, but at the moment I have no wish to step out of the apartment.
-
TOD:
I love it all. Truly. I believe I first became aware of the oeuvre of SJS when I discovered the cast album of Company in my parents collection of LPs and started listening to it obsessively. I was probably around 9 or 10.
-
Nice to see a post from DR Ron Pulliam last night. Sincere condolences to him and his family.
-
My dislike for Passion and Into the Woods are very public, but I very much like "Giants in the Sky." Lately I've been loving the recording of the Lincoln Center production of The Frogs, which makes me laugh quite a lot.
I was lucky in my acting days to have played Erroneus in two different productions of A Funny Thing Happened . . . I think it's the absolute perfect musical comedy. In 1970, I purchased the cast recording of Company as soon as it was released and played it unceasingly until Follies arrived. I think Follies remains my favorite Sondheim show, for so many reasons, most of which the last revivals all miss: aging and physical decline set in a crumbling theatre, mental health, choices and opportunities missed, regrets, your feelings about your own "success" and how others see it. Added to that, crazy Sally Durant is the dramatic character that most closely resembles my own mother.
-
DR Ron Pulliam, I send condolences to you and your aunt's family. Come back to us.
-
Thanks for the kind words.
I am perfectly fine....for an "orfalan". That is a favorite word now. Margaret O'Brien said it in one of her films...possibly "Journey for Margaret".
-
It is Saturday morning here in Johnston, South Carolina.
It's Fahrenheit 29 right now. I am all toasty warm sitting at my computer. I have been out of bed about 20 minutes and have not had my cup of coffee yet.
I may have left the work force in the summer of 2017, but I have not fully felt "retired" until now. I seek new purpose.
I seek something to munch upon, with something hot to wash it down.
-
Do you know if he ever read Writer’s Block?
-
Good morning.
-
My condolences, Ron.
-
I have always enjoyed your stories about your trip home for the holidays.
-
I'm sorry to hear about Sondheim. My goodness, what a legacy to leave behind!
-
I have always enjoyed your stories about your trip home for the holidays.
I enjoyed writing them back in the day. It was vastly different here from my life in Oakland. Writing about it was my way of documenting that things happened the way they did.
Truthfully, I do miss California...a lot. BUT...my retirement is so much more affordable here...and the living is easy (thank you, Ira Gershwin).
My goal for 2019 was to get a passport and to plan a trip or two. But, alas...the pandemic waylaid that goal. I aspire to travel more freely now if and when it feels safe to do so. Have been reading some scary news about a mutation of COVID-19 that has popped up in South Africa that current vaccines have no effect upon. Yikes.
Que sera sera, eh?

There is a glitch with today's notes.
If I exit, and then come back, yesterday's notes are the ones that are up.
I know there are notes for today because I have read them.
-
Gosh! It's still Saturday.
What will I do with today?
-
Good morning, all.

Try a manual refresh. I generally have to do that, too.

One More Kiss is a song I learned to love. Since it wasn’t on the original Follies, I didn’t learn it with the rest of the score or know its place in the tale. Now I love watching take after take on YouTube. Thrills me every time.
-
Two!
-
Off to face the day.
-
Good morning, all.
-
It was a stunner to hear the news of Sondheim's death as I'm leaving for my show. Then I walked outside and it was flurrying. Seemed fitting.
-
I seek something to munch upon
Ah! Your morning bun!
-
Wonderful stories about Mr. Sondheim.
The only personal tidbit I can contribute is learning that I'd just played Assassins right in front of him (literally) last year at the drive-in. As if playing it at a drive-in wasn't novel enough. Even if he hadn't been in attendance, I'd be kicking my own ASS till the end of time for a chord played too soon in "The Ballad of Booth". Now I can never apologize, and I look forward to a bright future in Hell. (But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln...)
-
Op'nin' night went well last night. Some flubs, but this group desperately needed to be in front of an audience and get past all of that. Looking forward to a decent show tonight.
-
I have a letter from SJS when he responded after I wrote to him when I was in college in 1985. Treasured! I know some here have had a much more significant ongoing correspondence.
Also, when I was attending the NY Philharmonic Follies in Concert at Lincoln Center, I was going up the escalator with my friend before the show. We happened to look back, and Mr SJS himself was standing right behind us for that 30-second ride. We were both too awestruck to say anything to him.
-
Ron, I am so sorry about your aunt. May your memories bring you comfort.
-
Sorry for being E&T so much lately
-
Received a text from the Vixter that they arrived home safely
-
When I was a little girl my dad built his own stereo system. At night after I went to bed he would play his West Side Story LP.
I would lie in bed and listen to all the songs and memorize them.
-
DR vixmom - glad you had a chance to be all together for the holiday.
-
Years later they broadcast “Forum” on TV and dad assembled us all to watch it.
-
You haven't mentioned the DH's immigration status in a while. Hope everything is moving forward on that front. And that your commute to your new job isn't too bad.
-
Those were my earliest Sondheim experiences…
-
Unlike Elmore I love Into The Woods.
-
DR ChasSmith, glad you got through opening night. It must feel good to be doing live theater again.
-
In December 1987 the newly married Vixdad and I took his parents , visiting from England, and mine to see the Broadway production.
I’ve always associated it with Christmas since then. One Christmas my in laws sent us the DVD of the original cast Broadway production and ever since then it has been played while we decorate the Christmas tree.
-
DR vixmom - glad you had a chance to be all together for the holiday.
Thank you. It’s the first holiday we’ve spent together since 2015.
-
Unfortunately there were some hiccups
-
The kids have been hosting Thanksgiving for their friends in Florida every year and were anxious to do the cooking this year
-
My mom has the biggest house, most appropriate for hosting these events so we planned to have it there with the kids cooking and me handling any tasks as assigned
-
Mom invited my brother, his wife, her parents and her sister and her husband to join us a# we usually share Thanksgiving with them all at my brother’s house
-
Charles prepared the turkey, his method being slathering then turkey with garlic herb butter and then wrapping it in bacon
-
Everything went well until the time came to remove the turkey from the oven
-
It was in a double layer of those disposable tin foil turkey trays and the kids hadn’t thought to put a supporting tray underneath
-
The butter and bacon fat had melted and half fill the pan with liquid
-
When the pan was lifted it bowed and a quantity poured out onto the floor of the oven
-
But other than the fact that there would be a mess to clean up once the oven cooled no one fretted too much.
-
The rest of the food was put out on the buffet, the turkey sliced and served and the Vixter put the rolls in to brown
-
Everyone was circling round the buffet table filling their plates when I noticed some puffs of smoke escaping the oven door
-
I warned the Vixter that her rolls seemed to be burning
-
So she opened the door and to flames and a cloud of acrid, eye watering smoke
-
She yelled for everyone to “get out of the house”, while I opened windows and doors to let the smoke out, my son in law ran to the neighbors to see if they had a fire extinguisher and everyone else continued filling their plates and grabbed their utensils and drinks before heading out into the dark yard
-
Then I spent some time in the bathroom washing my eyes with cold water and my son in law returned with a fire extinguisher
-
By then the fire had thankfully gone out
-
It took some time for the smoke to clear
-
Vixter was beside herself
-
My mother comforted the only grandchild still speaking to her by bitterly and loudly complaining that her oven was destroyed and that it would cost thousands of dollars and take months to replace and that all the rooms in the house would have to be repainted and the furniture would all smell like smoke forever and have to be thrown out
-
Bitch
-
Anyway the dinner, albeit eaten sitting or standing in the outside dark, was delicious and fortunately the weather was unseasonably mild
-
Once the smoke cleared out everyone came back in and the rest of the guests actually comforted Vixter by telling stories of holiday disasters and assuring her things were not as dire as a certain someone was saying
-
Anyway we had dessert and everyone left and Vixter , Vixhubby and I spent the next three hours cleaning up, washing and drying dishes and putting everything away
-
Oh I forgot to mention Vixdad woke with a horrific cold and missed everything
-
The next day the Vixter and Charles went back over and successfully cleaned the oven .
-
I have been reliably informed that the house and furniture does not smell of smoke, there are no smoke marks on the walls and the oven works just fine
-
My goodness, DR vixmom. Another astounding story!
-
With a happy ending, to boot.
-
I myself did not join them as I did not wish to spend the rest of my life in prison for the crime of matricide.
-
The miracle of Thanksgiving! :)
-
Although I still contend I would be found not guilty by reason of justifiable homicide by any reasonable jury of my peers
-
The one Sondheim show that I've actually been in so it holds a special place in my theater heart:
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (I played Hero)
Is there video anywhere? That must have been fun.
-
With a happy ending, to boot.
That happy ending was such a relief! Sorry you went through all that, vixmom.
-
I myself did not join them as I did not wish to spend the rest of my life in prison for the crime of matricide.
This was excellent judgment.
-
Those are such wonderful notes, and the beautiful Facebook post as well.
-
DR vixmom, I would never find you guilty. I would instead wonder what took you so long to commit it.
-
Ron, sending condolences. That was generous to give everyone freedom to only concentrate on good aspects of her life in remembering her.
-
DR Ron thank you for stopping in yesterday and sharing your family story. It was very moving, and as always, good to read your post.
-
From TCB:
However, we did have shoe store managers who got their jaws broken for not giving a customer a refund.
:o and that was plural! :(

After my dad turned 99, he'd said at a certain point, dying is just to be expected.
Covid changed that attitude bit only because covid caused him and Mom to have to be separate, and he'd been hoping there would be a time when they'd be living together again.
-
I'm up, I'm up - about five hours of sleep.
-
I sent Steve many of the books, but he notoriously doesn't like to read fiction. So, I have no idea if he read Writer's Block, although it's really his kind of twisty book.

I hope Vixdad is feeling better and no one caught his cold.

Once again, vixmom tells a tale that no one could even come close to. The competition is closed. We have a winner. 8)
-
I did think about y'all on Thanksgiving Day, figuring you were having such a wonderful time with everyone there that there's no way you'd be getting a minute to log in.
Well, I was on the right track. :D
-
Condolences to DR Ron Pulliam.
But how good to see you here again. Please stick around!
-
Thoughts for DR RONPULLIAM So nice to see you here!
-
Vibes for DR VIXMOM.....but thanks for sharing the wonderful seasonal story.
-
There's never a dull moment in the Vix family.
-
We got The Best vegetable box today. Everything I need to make soup and salad for the next week, probably. Which is just what I need after Thanksgiving.
-
The basketball game last night was very fun.
-
I shall do some thinking and writing about Mr. Stephen Sondheim later today.....
But I did get this almost 30 years ago.

Great story, Vixmom. Congratulations on restraining from ridding the earth of another pestilence.
-
After two episodes and despite the presence of Cloris Leachman, I have given up on American Gods.
-
So, what will happen with Sondheim's unused score for the movie Sing Out Loud? Will someone rework it for the stage?
-
As soon as I finish lunch, I think I'm headed for a nap. I may do some Christmas shopping this afternoon.
-
Let's move on ...
-
Five!
-
Hello, 1 guest!
-
Good Morning! Stopped in to say HI and see that DR Ron Pulliam has made an appearance and that made me happy. Good to "see" you DR Ron and my condolences to you and your family. I actually stopped in to read BK's notes about Stephen Sondheim as I missed them on Facebook yesterday. Well, I SAW them, but I was in a hurry and didn't get to read them and I knew they'd be up here today. I must say, though, DR. Larry's "Sunday" story always makes me cry.
Everything is fine around these parts. Thanksgiving with the entire family was such a treat. I have 4 nephews all about the same age (3-6) and to see them play and make noise was such a treat.
I've been playing shows again. I did 2 ...Spelling Bee's, a Mamma Mia and will do a White Christmas in a week or so. Nice to be back playing with other musicians.
DD Leo is doing well.
-
Back from some pasta papa at Hugo's and driving around, picking up yesterday's screeners, which include two movies I have no interest in - Annette and Coming to America 2 - I watched the first thirty minutes of Annette and found it to be terrible, even though there are those who proclaim it a visionary masterpiece and the film of the year.
-
I called and cancelled my night out. I'm not moving well today, and I don't relish being out on the street with a walker in freezing weather after dark. I'm sorry I turned down the invitation to what I know will be a festive evening.
-
I've been watching Mare of Easttown. Kate Winslet is amazing, but it's awfully dark and murky, and I swear half of the men look alike.
-
I see a lot of people got these typed notes before the internet, which I've assumed were typed by Mr. Sondheim's assistant, but there's been speculation that he typed them himself. (Does anyone know?)
I liked that he tried when he could to give a reason for not coming to a show. Also I liked the line the his reason was "flying to California for my sins." :)
[The file was too big so I linked to a jpg of the letter here.]
https://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/2017/05/looking-back-remembering-our.html
This one was 1994, and he signed it "Steve" - but in 1993, he'd used the formal signature "Stephen Sondheim."
-
Jack, is this you as a teenager?

Nice.
-
It is 3:40 p.m. And what have I done with today?
Well, I went to the post office to get my mail. I was feeling peckish, but found my favorite lunch spot on Saturdays was closed for the entire weekend. I went to my second favorite lunch spot and discovered it, too, has been closed since Wednesday night and will not reopen until Monday.
Well, I thought...there is always "the club". It's a drive, but it's good food. I called and ordered a cheeseburger all the way and some French fried onion rings.
That was the ticket.
I sat in my chair in the den after I ate and watched "David Copperfield" for the umpteenth time. And then I fell asleep.
Ah, well.
-
After two episodes and despite the presence of Cloris Leachman, I have given up on American Gods.
We haven't watched it yet. It is interesting to know you gave up on it after all the recommendations we have had to watch it. I like the book very much, read one more in the series and stopped.
-
Would someone kindly refresh my memory over what images can be posted here. Are photobucket images all right, and if so, what should be eliminated from the url?
-
I seem to recall that Photobucket images worked, once upon a time, but I'm afraid I'm hazy on the mechanics of it. DR George would know the answer to your question. I usually just add photos as an attachment using the button below.
-
ChasSmith mentioned his personal friend, Robin de Jesus, recently. I first saw Robin in the movie Camp. He played a theater geek who had a photo of Sondheim on his dresser. His roommate, more of a jock, asked him if that were a picture of his dad.
Later in the movie, Sondheim himself showed up to the camp. Fun scene in a movie I always enjoy watching.
-
Listening to Merrily today. Like It Was broke my heart, as always.
-
This is from The Washington Post about how much Sondheim hated his mother b
As an adult, he acknowledged a gift from his friend Mary Rodgers by writing back: “Thanks for the plate, but where was my mother’s head? Love, Steve.”
-
DR Matthew I am pleased you had a nice Thanksgiving and time to enjoy your nephews.

My mother comforted the only grandchild still speaking to her by bitterly and loudly complaining that her oven was destroyed and that it would cost thousands of dollars and take months to replace and that all the rooms in the house would have to be repainted and the furniture would all smell like smoke forever and have to be thrown out
:( Is this why the Vixter is the only grandchild still speaking to her?
Yep, she’s alienated the other three

Quite a few years ago when the website photo uploaded kept filling up and BK had to regularly delete earlier photos, I created a Photobucket account and gave the passwords to anyone who wanted it. Vixmom used it quite a bit. ;) But a few years ago, they changed their policy and wouldn't allow hot-linking of photos anymore, so we couldn't use it to post pictures. They are all still there, though.
If you subscribe to a certain level of their paid accounts, you can hot-link photos.

That really is sad. I am sorry.
-
It’s rainy and cold today. I enjoyed my too-short nap.
-
Finished with most of my shopping.
-
So, for a while I've been paying the basic minimum to keep the photos saved because there are too many to keep in the free account. This minimum level account allows the storage, but not hot-linking.
-
I keep forgetting to post this, but now that I'm reminded...if anyone who has uploaded photos to the HHW Photobucket account (like Vixmom) would like to log in and download and save them to your own computers so that I can delete the account, that would be a good thing.
-
Let me know if you think you uploaded pictures but don't remember the login, and I can send it to you. Then when they're all saved on the computers of the people who uploaded them, the account can be deleted. :)
-
six!!!

As an adult, he acknowledged a gift from his friend Mary Rodgers by writing back: “Thanks for the plate, but where was my mother’s head? Love, Steve.”
He was, as an adult, terrified of her. I had gone over to his house one day, and when I went upstairs to the office, I noticed him crouched under the stairs with his hands over his ears while Patricia spoke to a lady onthe phone . . . No, dear, he's out . . . Yes, i'll have him call you . . . Yes, yes . . .
During this, Patricia motioned for me to sit. I never asked who it was, but when Steve came into the office, Patricia said, Your mother wants you to call.

Thank you to the internet and quick access to my medical tests.
Though I feared I had it, I do not have the family curse. NO CANCER!
A couple of other, non-urgent, things showed up that might be adding to my increased pain.

I am browsing the photos. There is a nice one of Tom, George, and me at Hawks I can't seem to find a copy in my files. George it must have been on your camera.

Thank you and thank you DR Singdaw.

Keith & I have been smiling all day :)

Ron, we reconfigured things here, so most photos can be posted directly without going through a service.

Dozed off for an hour. Finished Howl's Moving Castle.

Thank you to the internet and quick access to my medical tests.
Though I feared I had it, I do not have the family curse. NO CANCER!
A couple of other, non-urgent, things showed up that might be adding to my increased pain.
Hoo and Ray for the non-cancer!! :D

Thank you.

George, I went to the photos and saved some I either don't have or need to double check. Thank you.

It was fun going through all of the photos.

I'm getting ready for dinner tonight. It's the first time I've worn a tie in who knows how long. But it's that kind of place.
-
That was a really old photo, Jane. The recipe for cherpumples calls for cream cheese frosting, but it was soooo overly sweet. I frost it with lightly sweetened whipped cream now.
-
I meant that I don't pipe frosting. I'll spread it on with a knife.
-
For better or worse.
-
But usually I make a bundt cake and spoon a glaze over it. Much easier.
-
I finally heard from the roofer. We might get repaired on Friday.
-
That is hopeful news, DR Laura.
-
To start a new page.

And... ABOUT TIME!!!!

Excellent!

And I think I'm showing uncharacteristic restraint, not having even mentioned laundry or even the French Laundry all day.
-
Even while Skip was actually doing laundry this morning. I typed it but backspaced over it.
-
It's the farthest thing from my mind. Washers. Dryers. Never heard of them. They're just characters in "Caroline or Change" with big arias.
Catching up on musical clips.
This is The Dryer from a regional production of "Caroline or Change"

I'm not even going to think about asking what that woman wrote. I put it all out of my mind. Completely.

Vibes that happens on schedule.

Thanks. I truly am in awe of the results. My symptoms have been too similar to my sister's before she was diagnosed.

Yes, it was an old photo. You might have fun browsing the photos.

It is a fun tree.

I agree though when the boys were young I made rather fancy cakes for them.

The photo says Hawks Prairie Restaurant. I didn't see a date but am guessing July, 2016.

George & Tom I don't remember booths there.

George & Tom I don't remember booths there.
Well, I'd only been there a couple of times, so I don't remember much of it at all.
-
Here's an NPR article that I think Laura might like:
The butterflies are back! Annual migration of monarchs shows highest numbers in years (https://www.npr.org/2021/11/26/1059263867/the-butterflies-are-back-annual-migration-of-monarchs-shows-highest-numbers-in-y).

I googled and found photos of the restaurant, including the booths. It also said permanently closed :(

I remember when it closed. It was the end of an era. There was a big article in the local paper about how Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell were moving in to the space. ::)
-
Chick-fil-A came in first and had drive-thru lines that lasted as long as a half hour! I only went there twice to try it out...and only when the line was very short. I don't go there because I don't think they're anything special...and their anti-gay stance. :P
-
I do go to that new Taco Bell every once in a while because it's not too far from my mom's house and I do love Taco Bell. :)
-
Oh, look! It's Page Eight!!

And, speaking of bells...
-
Well, page eight ain't nothing to sneeze at.

Good night, friends.

What was the place we ate in Redmond WA in June 2018? It was in the same mall as the theater.

Yup! Won't Tom be surprised when he logs in tonight!

Didn't Pete Buttigieg make a statement that they have bad politics but good chicken, suggesting he ate there?

I remember something like that.

Hearing how Sondheim was scared by his mom even being in the phone could make you wonder: would you have wanted all the acclaim, great canon of work, great legacy, great wealth - if it necessarily came along with, and maybe even were shaped by, a mom who felt that way?

With the police violence that happened last September in Miami, one thing I am grateful that was caught on the officer bodycam
my dad at 100 at 17:30 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRrjcb6JyMQ
SHOVING THE SERGEANT OUT THE DOOR.
And there is the helper who law enforcement lied had a fractured shoulder 8:30 that morning - at noon there 3-1/2 hours later that amazing trick shoulder is nowhere to be seen [I guess that's one of the tricks the shoulder does]
SAYING OVER AND OVER LIKE A CLASSIC FILM VILLAIN "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING."
But at least I see Dad, two days after his 100th birthday) trying to fight for me! If the fake charges hadn't been there, we would never have bothered securing and getting the bodycams, and I never would have seen that!
-
Back from dinner.
It was quite wonderful. And it was a nice time with friends.
-
They invited me to Christmas dinner, and I just might take them up on the offer.
-
Has anyone read Hell of a Book? It just won the National Book Award.

It's time to turn into a pumpkin.

I've never even heard of it...which is not surprising. ::)
-
A lull. ::)
-
But since we made it to page eight(!), it's not as horrible a situation as it normally would've been...in my humble opinion (IMHO, in Internet speak).

;D

No, this is down south in Lacey.

Yes, they had booths all the way around the outside of the room, and tables in the middle.
