Well, you've read the notes, the notes bid farewell and welcome, and now it is time for you to post until the 2024 cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: FELICIFIC!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept rather well last night. Stella stayed with me much of the night and then replaced her. Annabelle showed up sometime - she's sneaky and a bit hard to document - and around 6:30 she crawled under the blankets to cuddle.
-
Good morning, friends.

The New Year's Eve ball first dropped in NYC's Times Square in 1907.

:)
-
I still don't know what I'm wearing to the living room New Year's Eve.
-
I might not even go.
-
Yesterday was a rather good day with company just after noon. When Marc left, I downloaded the 2011 Ohio Light Opera performance of Jubilee to my iTunes. The orchestration changes on the numbers with no saxes do not sound bad. I think the orchestra strings sound great, but the conducting is very "in your face" and there is absolutely no subtlety in their very loud playing. The drummer is particularly obnoxious.
For the movie sequence, I got to write a parody of Max Steiner's King Kong music. This recording includes more of it than any other. Unfortunately, OLO adds some really poor dialogue over sme of it.
-
Dress for success.
-
I now have documentation of four Jubilee performances:
1986 premiere, New Amsterdam Theatre Co., Town Hall
1998 Gay Men's Health Crisis benefit, Carnegie Hall
1999 BBC Radio-3 holiday broadcast
2011 Ohio light Opera
My preference is the BBC Radio-3 broadcast, with reservations mainly about the producer's misinformation and decision to cut music rather than trim the book and to add additional uncredited scenes by Dick Vosburgh. The cast, for the most part, is wonderful, and the BBC concert orchestra makes my work sound really good.
After that, the 1986 performances because no other ingenue has performed the role as wonderfully as Rebecca Luker.
-
Fascinating, DR elmore3003.
-
As soon as I win the lottery or some wealthy show tunes-loving patron turns up wiith the money, I'm dragging Rob Berman off to Dublin with a select cast to record the complete Jubilee score. If I win the Powerball, I just may record another 4-10 shows while I'm at it.
-
I'd buy that!

This is the dawning of
The Age of Aquarius 2024.

Right before the clock strikes midnight tonight, make sure you raise your left leg.

That was you will be sure to start the new year off on the right foot.

Good morning, all.
-
It must be a leftover Christmas miracle - I had a solid un-drugged sleep, which was only interrupted by the expected coming-out-of-the-cold coughing fit at five in morning. I slugged back some Robitussin and slept soundly again till eight.
Now I have to really take it easy and get rid of the cough through today and tomorrow.
-
But wait, there’s more!
I spoke with the scheduler at the doctor’s office and explained about the cold. She performed her own miracle and penciled me in for Thursday in case I woke up on Tuesday and didn’t feel good about coming in. And Thursday just happens to be the deadline for the doctor placing the order for the lenses. I’d be a fool not to take her up on that so I already know I’m calling in first thing Tuesday to ensure better success at - for instance, not coughing up a storm in there and alarming everyone.
-
Great news, DR ChasSmith.
-
Good morning

I must get to church

We didn't have a White Christmas here, but we did get snow overnight.

One more.

DR Elmore, most fascinating about the performances of Jubilee, and in particular, your comments about the orchestra and the conducting of the Ohio one.

A wonderful final day of 2023 to all and one.
It is the 31st of December 2023, and 30 years ago today, I retired from the U.S. Navy (after 24 1/2 years of service).
I loaded my belongings into my 1990 Ford Probe and headed north. Passed Disneyland on the way. It was a long drive to Oakland CA, but I got there around 6:30 p.m. (I left San Diego around 9:30 a.m.)
Happily, I had a home to go to as I was sharing a rather nice apartment with an old Navy buddy. I later (two years later) got my own condo where I remained for the bulk of my stay in California.
It is odd how vivid "some" of my memories are about the past 53 years (I enlisted in the Navy in 1970). It is quite a relief that I don't have the so-called "photographic" memory. No one should want to have instant recall of every moment of every day on one's life.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
-
I have no plans for today other than the Zoom chat with film music buddies. I will pick up my lunch at Third Generation a little after 11 a.m.
It is a coolish (39 degrees) morning, but it is very sunny and the air seems ultra clear.
-
Happy New Year to one and all! Here's to a Happy and Healthy 2024 filled with lots of wonderful show tunes! Speaking of which the new Broadway Radio Show is my Best of 2023 as I count down my picks for the Top Ten Cast Recordings of 2023 along with 5 Honorable Mentions and 1 Special album to take note of...check it out!

New Year’s Eve greetings! As usual, it’ll be a quiet one for us. We’ll watch the Bengals’ game late this afternoon and maybe “Oppenheimer” while waiting for the new year.
-
I enjoyed all of the pictures and links yesterday.
And DR VIXMOM's silent drama at the inner web sanctuary.

LOL! Excellent!

Good to hear the upbeat health news, Chas.

This was an interesting observation, I thought, on All that Chat about the Kennedy Center Honors.
"Re: Liza and the Kennedy Honors

<
Also - you can honor a composer or a playwright or a choreographer by performing some of their work as a tribute. But when a performer is being honored, they have to sit there and watch other people do the material they got famous for performing. Some stars love that (Dick Van Dyke sure seemed to get a big kick out of that in his special last week), but others might find it a little awkward.
I'm not saying Liza feels that way, but that's something about these kind of award ceremonies that I've always found a little off.

I rarely see Brazil nuts in anything except mixed nuts that I simply avoid them, and really have no clue if I like the taste or not. My friend from Brazil says they are not called Brazil nuts. Yesterday at the house next door there was U HAUL truck backed up into the driveway.

Went to Gelson's. I had fourteen bucks in cash and was determined not to spend one penny more than that for food for today. This is more difficult than you can imagine. Yes, I could have gotten a chicken Caesar salad, but I didn't want that. The first thing I went for was hot dogs. 7.99 for the dogs, 3.49 for the buns. But you can't get chili or red cabbage for less than five bucks so...

Then I decided that the only thing to do was tuna sandwiches. Of course, they didn't have the onion rolls I like. What else is new? So, tuna 3.99, pack of six onion bagels 3.69. So far, so good. I then got a small think of cream cheese for 5.49. Total: app. 12.70 and just under 14 with tax. When I checked out, we put in my rewards number and I got five bucks off. So nine bucks for the food and five in my pocket.

At seven, I'll prepare the tuna pasta salad and at eight I'll begin slicing and dicing.

My father had a childhood friend who used words to describe different groups of people I found inappropriate, to put it kindly. I once asked my father why the friend used those words and his response was that his friend had heard them growing up and didn't think about it. Yet they were never words I heard my father use.

Good evening and Happy New Year

We used to do a fun soup and games night on New Year's Eve at church. The thinking is that you'd use the bones from your Christmas turkey, ham, or roast to make soup.

This year's New Year's Eve soup party will be held on January 7.

I'm not terribly enthused about that. I may or may not attend.

I'll enjoy my leftover Christmas eggnog and some cheese and crackers this evening and then go to bed. Some neighbors behind us have always been very obnoxious about fireworks. But I didn't hear any last July 4. I'm hoping it's one of the houses that recently sold.

And he has completely shaved his head. I am not amused.
I have never been amused by Mr. Cryer. How he won Emmys for his blatant hamming on "Two and Half Men" is beyond me.
-
Nice link DR FREDDIE.
Thanks, Jrand!
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Good evening and Happy New Year
Happy new year, Laura!
-
So bk is watching ROPE. A fine film. I know that Jrand would not miss the name of the camera man. 😉
-
Happy New Year and Happy New Year’s Eve to all.
-
Ah DR FREDDIE do you mean Mr. Valentine?
-
I am listening to some Beatles Cd's to welcome in the new year.
It is a collection of their first four US releases.....in mono and stereo.
Of course we first had them in MONO.....so it is nice to hear them in STEREOPHONIC SOUND......as Mr Fred Astaire & Ms. Janis Paige sang.
-
It is very quiet in my neighborhood still.
-
I talked to my friend Jerry who reported that a dear friend passed away.....and we are both realizing that at our age.....it is a thing devoutly to be accepted.....or expected.
-
I can't imagine that I am 73 years old......more behind me than ahead of me.
But so much more I want to do....and accomplish.....I guess I'll just keep moving along.....
-
Bbl.
-
DR LAURA January 7 is NOT New Year's Eve and I hope you convey our consternation to the committee.
-
MR BK must be chopping and boiling.
-
Ah DR FREDDIE do you mean Mr. Valentine?
If you mean the song, the show it's from isn't based on a true story.
-
I talked to my friend Jerry who reported that a dear friend passed away.....and we are both realizing that at our age.....it is a thing devoutly to be accepted.....or expected.
I am very sorry for the loss of your dear friend :(
-
I can't imagine that I am 73 years old......more behind me than ahead of me.
But so much more I want to do....and accomplish.....I guess I'll just keep moving along.....
That is good.
-
DR LAURA January 7 is NOT New Year's Eve and I hope you convey our consternation to the committee.
I checked our corgi wall calendar, and it's very thorough. It confirms that January 7 is not New Year's Eve!
So that's double confirmation.

I am sure they will appreciate our consternation ;)
-
I talked to my friend Jerry who reported that a dear friend passed away.....and we are both realizing that at our age.....it is a thing devoutly to be accepted.....or expected.
Condolences on the loss of your friend, Jrand.
-
Thank you DR JANE & DR FREDDIE......it was a close friend of my friend Jerry......but the condolences are appreciated.
-
Have the guests started arriving for the West Coast Do?
-
DR FREDDIE I was talking about the cinema photogapher of ROPE....Joseph A. Valentine.
-
I may have misunderstood your reference.
-
Are the guests arriving on the West Coast yet?
-
At seven, I'll prepare the tuna pasta salad and at eight I'll begin slicing and dicing.
But not the mincing, I take it.
-
I think the "Do" is tomorrow, DR Jrand73.
-
I found something to help DR John G. usher in the new year:
It's called Peppermint Vienna Pickle Pie!
-
Or, if not that, then if we only had a dog made of cheese.
Oh, wait...
-
Meanwhile, this cat is staying at The Ritz tonight.
-
Hey, everyone.
-
I'm here, but probably not for too long. It's about ten, and I'm starting to fade.
Feeling well, thank goodness, but not with a lot of energy.
-
Thank you DR JANE & DR FREDDIE......it was a close friend of my friend Jerry......but the condolences are appreciated.
You are welcome.

'night
-
DR Ron Pulliam, I think you should add the hand jive to your repertoire.
-
Everybody's doing it.
-
Does anyone eat "Hoppin' John" for New Year's? I don't know what it is exactly, but my email inbox is overflowing with recipes for it.
-
Sorry to hear about the loss of your (and Jerry’s) friend, Jrand.
-
I enjoyed your song, Freddie.
-
It's a bit odd being three hours later here than it is on the left coast.
Here, we have just finished the Merengue, and we are so tired!
I may have one round of the Bunny Hop left in me so long as it happens later.
May we have photographic evidence of that Bunny Hop, Ron?
-
DR FREDDIE I was talking about the cinema photogapher of ROPE....Joseph A. Valentine.
Jrand, it was my post, not Freddie’s. IMDB used to credit my uncle (Edward Fitzgerald) as cameraman on ROPE, but I see that he has now been demoted to “operator of the camera” or something like that. Unfortunately, so much family history has been lost as the people who knew have all passed away.
-
Hoppin' John is something I must investigate.
-
I found something to help DR John G. usher in the new year:
It's called Peppermint Vienna Pickle Pie!
Ugh! That is totally disgusting! Even worse than John G’s lime jello thing.
-
Ah thank you, DR singdaw.
-
I first had hoppin' john in 1975 at actress Lee Purcell's house. I used to know what was in it - black beans, I think, or some kind of beans, ham, and that's all I remember.
-
Tuna pasta salad is made.
-
I'm here, but probably not for too long. It's about ten, and I'm starting to fade.
Feeling well, thank goodness, but not with a lot of energy.
Good recovery! Stay well! But I’m glad to hear you have an alternative date.
-
Slicing and dicing is done.
-
Ninety minutes for all that. Accompaniment was/is the complete Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras - amazing, as always. Still an hour to go to finish that.
-
How are you feeling, Bruce?
-
This doesn't even feel like New Year's Eve.
-
Grateful for being done with the sickness.
-
And I'm here to PARTAY!!!
-
I love that piece of music!
-
Fit as a fiddle, one hopes.
-
Feeling almost 100% today. Not sure if I've even coughed once and thankfully no shortness of breath.
-
Champagne cork is ready to pop.
-
Glad you’re feeling better. That was quite a bout you had.
-
I enjoyed your song, Freddie.
Thanks, Jeanne!
-
Champagne cork is ready to pop.
I’m ready to pop, too. Ate too much for dinner.
-
No, it doesn’t feel like NYE. But what does NYE actually feel like?
-
Singdaw, do you have a response to that question?
-
Glad that MR BK is feeling better and ready to celebrate.
-
About and hour and half away from HNY here on the right coast.
-
I’m too full to eat dessert.
-
DR JEANNE it feels like a NEW start for us!
-
Too full for dessert DR JEANNE.
this is not something I understand.
-
About and hour and half away from HNY here on the right coast.
Right coast? Is Indiana no longer in the Midwest?
-
And so the new year gets closer!
-
Did I miss something?
-
I've never been a NYE person. Here are my tickets for tonight's festivities:
-
DR JEANNE it feels like a NEW start for us!
I would love to see a new start to many things. I’d like to undo all that’s happened in Gaza in the last 3 months, for starters.
-
Sparkle, Neely, sparkle!
-
I've never been a NYE person. Here are my tickets for tonight's festivities:
I’ve never been a NYE person, either. That’s why an online gathering suits me to a T.

PARTAY!
-
Happy new year, everyone! See you all in 2024!
One of the best things for me in 2023 is being back on HHW.
Thanks to BK for this site!
-
Does anyone have any NY rituals? Bruce has his contemplation thing. I do something similar, but I don’t have a specific time for it, just sometime around the NY when I feel so inclined.
-
I shall buy a jumbo pack of googly eyes and see where it takes me in 2024.
-
Good night, Freddie.
-
No rituals for me, alas.
-
Spoke to my mother on the East coast earlier to wish her a Happy New Year.
-
She is going to have a hip replacement in a few weeks.
-
Looking forward to Open Enrollment concluding on 1/15.
-
I shall buy a jumbo pack of googly eyes and see where it takes me in 2024.
Now that’s an interesting thought. Photos?
-
Looking forward to Open Enrollment concluding on 1/15.
I bet you are. The holidays and Open Enrollment seems like a lot at once.
-
DR Ron Pulliam, I think you should add the hand jive to your repertoire.
Oh, sure. And just as soon as I get my groove on, someone will steal my partner.
-
For example, here's a great use of googly eyes:
-
That's the beauty of line dancing, or so I've heard. You don't need a partner.
-
Of course, I've never actually line danced, myself.
-
Or really danced at all. Except on stage.
-

For example, here's a great use of googly eyes:

THIS is what I have always wanted to be able to do...but with two left feet, it wasn't in my cards:

LOL DR singdaw and DR RON PULLIAM.

Wouldn't that be fun, to be able to dance like that!

Happily, I was passable in the musical shows I did. I never did more than I did in "The Music Man" in college. The "Marian the Library" number was my bete noir. Learned how to do a knee slide without knee pads. I have not recovered to this day.
My dancing could be compared to Astaire's singing. I was on beat and got it done.

50 minutes until 2024.

Check out this tribute/homage to the Astaire/Powell number:

I think they do it rather well, but the guy's suit is a bit ill-fitted and does him no favors.
I'd say it's on a par with the first complete run-through of the number that Astaire and Powell did, but you just know they did it a dozen or more times perfecting it.

Forty minutes to East Coast New Year.

Folks, folks, I am going to have to bid you a good night.
I don't do the magic ball drop, and I'm just as sleepy as I can be.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

You know what's funny about Villa-Lobos' brilliant Bachianas - I didn't realize until about five or six years ago that it's all based on - Bach.

Sometimes I'm dense.

I used to love to tap. It is sooo much fun. And so aerobic!

Too late... DR John G. could have brought these for tonight.
Are they wrapped in anchovies? Yum.
-
Sometimes I'm dense.
Take a number.
-
Hello, John G.
-
Did you see the Vienna Pickle pie that Singdaw “made”?
-
DR RON PULLIAM thanks so much for sharing that link.
It was tremendous.
They were wonderful.
-
I would like to see DR RON PULLIAM in The Music Man.
-
On beat and got it done.
Who could ask for anything more....except maybe DR ELMORE.
-
Twenty minutes until the New Year.
-
Looks like I'm still here.
-
But not for very long.
-
Eyes are closing...
-
DR JEANNE I have been tapping six age six.....it is a skill and a joy!
-
Wale up DR CHAS SMITH we are so close!
-
I am hoping 2024 brings everyone of our DRs to their hopes and joys. And that it is the best year ever.
-
Hanging on.......... :)
-
Nine minutes to East Coast balls dropping.
-
Dropping Balls - that's the title of my next novel.

ChasSmith is hanging on.

He really is.

I’ll take it to the next church potluck.

Fireworks and gunshots!
-
Dancing was fun tonight.
-
The fireworks have been going off since about 8 pm. They’re close and loud now.
-
The bird does not like the noise.

Happiest of New Years.
-
Thanks to MR BK and the most wonderful site on all of the internet!
-
Good night, and a VERY GOOD NEW YEAR, everyone!

Happy and Healthy New Year to all my HHW friends!

I am hoping 2024 brings everyone of our DRs to their hopes and joys. And that it is the best year ever.
Yes, I second that.
Don’t you think that at least one of us should win the lottery? Doesn’t matter which lottery.
And that bk sells his screenplay.
We know that Vixmom and Vixdad will have their first grandchild.
Any additions?

Good night, everyone.

I'm still not a fan of olives, though. ::)
;)

Time to shave and shower, then do the contemplation thing. Keep posting and partying.
-
Happy New Year to all of the dear readers here at HHW!
❤️
-
DR JEANNE what a wonderful post!
-
To my fellow and posters and to MR BK.....Health, Wealth, and Happiness in 2024!
-
Contemplation vibes to MR BK.
-
One of my greatest joys and pleasures in the past year have been the wonderful posts here at HHW.....and all to the work and efforts of HHW and MR BK.
Long they may wave!
-
So far so good.
-
The fellowship and enjoyment and pleasure that is brought to me by HHW, Mr BK, and my fellow posters cannot be measured.
Happiest of New Years to all and my undeniable and unmistakable thanks to MR BK and all of you.
Words cannot express my joy and gratitude!
-
Page Thirteen!
-
Page fourteen for sure. We simply must.
-
It’s New Year’s here on the Third Coast.
-
Went out to look at the fireworks. Didn’t see many.
-
They seem to be louder than ever, but they aren’t very visible.
-
Grand Hotel is wonderful.
-
The movie is over and I am done.
-
Too old to stay up this late.
-
Good night, all.
-
And Happy New Year!
-
People come, people go.
-
Contemplation in twenty minutes.
-
Just shaved, and in five minutes I'll shower and wash 2023 the hell down the drain.
-
Down the Drain with 2023!
-
2024! Bring it on!
-
Contemplation vibes for MR BK
-
Hello, gang!
-
Just over a half hour left in 2023 here.
-
Shower done. Contemplation done. Champagne uncorked and poured.
-
Where's George.
-
I should think he'd be here to ring in the New Year.
-
We were invited to a party at a neighbor’s. Well, just the wife and I, and we don’t have a babysitter so I figured I’d wander over there at the appointed time, 7, which I double-checked.
-
And yet...
-
He's not.
-
Thirty minutes to the West Coast New Year.
-
Figured I’d spend an hour then come home. I arrive and the lady of the house is like “oh, I’m not even dressed yet. The party starts at 8.” I’m like, “your husband told me 7. I have it right here.” She’s like “it’s 8.” So I said I’d come back but did I ever return? No I never returned.
-
Came home and we had a little countdown and party with the kids and that’s where I wanted to be anyway.
-
Nice couple. Older couple, but I didn’t like the vibe. She acted like she didn’t even know me. Like why was I so rude and early. Later the guy texts me, “Sorry, we start at 8.” F off!
-
BK a follow-up came to me, something from when we were talking about the Ratings Game and the feedback you got from DeVito on the music you did. But did he direct you personally in the WAC scene you appear in? Or did you do that sequence?
-
Twenty minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
DeVito directed it.
-
Since I won't be here for the party.

That's pretty darned cute!

Paul Anka sang a revised My Way in Times Square followed up by Lennon’s Imagine, which is now just a catch-all track for anyone looking to inject a kind of dramatic hopeful energy. I found it a bit of a downer, but Paul milked it right to the last second before the ball drop. Producer had to be about to soil himself.
-
The usual suspects and late-night denizens. All others have faded. 15 min to go!
-
Fifteen minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
When does the limbo begin?
I have a song "How Low Can You Go?" about a jealous murder-minded husband, that takes place during a limbo game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNe9VtWauf0
It's fiction, of course.
But in the show, the murder never happens, so there's a kind of happy ending.
That's great, Fred!
-
Gettin' exciting around here.
-
What?
-
13 precious minutes left in 2023.
-
WHAT?
-
Then I decided that the only thing to do was tuna sandwiches.
Love it when that happens!
-
I liked the feng shui of the number 2023.
-
2024 gonna take some getting used to.
-
Gratuitous Post #404!! ;D
-
I like 3 and I don’t like 4, is my problem.
-
2024 gonna take some getting used to.
I usually only write one check a month, so it's not too difficult in that respect, but when writing or typing a new year, there's always a learning curve.
-
Why do people even have preferences about numbers? Or colors?
-
Ten minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
Ten Minutes, says the stage mgr.
-
Where do I find kitty clothes for Christmas?
Sweet!
-
“Thank you, ten.”
-
Nine minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
Always enjoyed that backstage custom.
-
Thank you nine.
-
Excitement is palpable.
-
Notes will go right up at midnight.
-
I'll try to be in bed by one.
-
Eight minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
Seven minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
Still clinging to the glories of 2023 for a handful of minutes.
-
Good luck the neighbors are quiet tonight.
I just noticed that I haven't heard any fireworks around here.
-
People are already exploding things.
-
I know it's now against the law for private citizens, but I've heard the official Tumwater city fireworks in past years.
-
Page 15!
-
Maybe they just haven't started yet. :-\
-
Six minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
I spent most of the evening at my friend Shelly's place, just chatting and hanging out together.
-
Balls feel like they're going to drop.
-
Thank you six.
-
The partay is HERE, not elsewhere.
-
Here I tell you.
-
Five minutes to West Coast New Year.

The crowds are beginning to cheer.
-
Thank you five!
-
Rah rah rah.

Thank you four.
-
Yes, we'll always have Paris.
-
Three minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
Parades are parading. Balls ready to drop.
-
The last time I saw Paris…
-
My friend Shelly showed me some of her father's science fiction pulp magazines...most are fairly good condition!
-
The balls are dropping, for me and my gal.
-
Thank you three.
-
Two minutes to West Coast New Year.
-
My friend Shelly showed me some of her father's science fiction pulp magazines...most are fairly good condition!
Intrigued!
-
And here we go.
-
Thank you two.
-
All that and page sixteen, too.
-
I brought home this 1951 issue of Startling Stories:
-
16!
-
Christ, what a year.
-
What's really cool is that there's an actual story co-written by Fredric Brown:
-
One minute to West Coast New Year.
-
Christ, what a year.
You got that right! :o
-
Seconds away…
-
Get ready.
-
Thanks one.
-
Not much longer.

Champagne downed.

Happy new year, gentlemen!
And to you, and BK, and all us Hainesies and Kimlets!! :D
