Holy moley on rye - page four!

It's so weird - every time I look at the computer it says California time.  I keep forgetting how early it is elsewhere.

There is a copy of Newsweek in my hotel room.  I haven't looked at a copy of Newsweek in a decade.  Since when did they start dumbing down this magazine?  It looks like it was designed for infants to read.  And the content is no better than People.  Is Time the same way?

Yes, there is palpable excitement in the air as HHW folks descend on this fair, sunny city. It would be cool to have footage of each HHW person as they come off their plane, out of their cab, etc. We could beam this footage live over the net to those at home in the rest of the country.

NEWSWEEK started dumbing down around the time the internet came around and it has gotten exponentially worse the last 4 years or so. They should call it USA TODAY, THE MAGAZINE.

Pogue, I often wondered about Hickox, being that THEATRE OF BLOOD is the only film I've seen of his.  It is so stylishly and cleverly directed. I mean it manages a real balance of dark comedy, plus some actually scary scenes and moments of real suspense. The Shakespearean aspect is very well done too.

DVD player: Alternating between The Incredibles and Pulp Fiction.  They're strangely complementary.

I'm trying to imagine Tarantino directing a Disney film.  My brain is warping.

BK, re: Newsweek. Time's become like that too.  Welcome to the USA TODAY effect.  Pop news.  Same with most networks.  Lots hip graphics and stylistic touches...very little substantial news.

That's why I go on the internet and read newspapers.  And watch the BBC World News. The only news magazine I read anymore is THE WEEK. which is still a bit capuslated...but it usually distills both sides of an argument down to the pertinent basics without a lot of bullshit rhetoric .

Walter Cronkite used to give us more real, hard news in 15 minutes than any 24-hour news channel now on the air.

Rodzinski, Doug Hickox's career wasn't stellar, but he was a strong solid director (came out of British commercials, I think) and did some interesting films:  Theatre of Blood, my Hound of the Baskervilles, Zulu Dawn (prequel to Zulu about Ishlandhwana), and Entertaing Mr. Sloane.  He also did a Duke Wayne cop film called Brannigan and a nice mini-series of Robt. Louis Stevenson's Master of Ballantrae with Michael York and Richard Thomas.

BK, actually I remember my Weekly Reader having more in-depth articles in it.   Do kids still get the Weekly Reader in school?

According to their Web site, Weekly Reader does still exist. They are certainly more slick than I remember them.

http://www.weeklyreader.com/corporate/index.asp

Weekly Reader was purchased in November 1999 by Ripplewood Holdings.

Ben, thanks for the interesting link.  Yeah, a bit more slick than I remember.  Seems ours was about six or eight pages of newsprint, all pix in B&W.

It's too bad that such reliable rags as Time and Newsweek have to now appeal to the lowest common demoninator.  Is the New Yorker any good anymore?

This may be "wrong", but I think I am in love with those two little dancing Hawaiian girls.

That is oh, so wrong! ;)

I stopped reading The New Yorker when that woman took over as editor and turned it into something it shouldn't be.  She isn't there any more (I have blocked her name from my mind) but I don't think NY has returned to its former glory.

So, the question then is what magazines of old have kept their integrity?

Peggy and the Brindle Boys have their own sites with Petfinders.  Here's hoping they find new homes fast!

Even American Heritage isn't what it used to be.

Rodzinski, It seems Douggie Hickox also did several Brit rock and roll films in the sixties starring such acts as Peter & Gordon and Freddy and the Dreamers.

So, have any of you Left Coast posters come across a California quarter (or two) that you might be willing to drop in a card and send to a New Yorker who despite obsessive checking of all change received has not yet come across one? I'm talking about the U.S. Mint 50 State Quarter program for those of you who don't know. I've been collecting them since it started and I have always been able to get at least one in my change soon after the Quarter was released but the California quarter has been in circulation for a while now and I haven't seen one (other than on the Web site). I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a Hamburger today (or send you a quarter in return)
