I just noticed that I, BK, have supplanted Tom of Oz as the highest poster here at haineshisway.com.  Yes, Virginia, I am the highest of all because Tom of Oz has been SLACKING, do you hear me?

And I, on the other hand, have snuggly worked my way into the TOP TEN!

TD, you are an officer and a gentleman.

As long as you're not calling me Joe Cocker!
You may call me Jennifer Warnes, but, like Eric Idle in LIFE OF BRIAN, I prefer "Loretta."   :o

I think I shall be headed for bed, as well.  If I don't get a call for work in the morning, I think I may go get some pancakes.  Pity I can't get DuPar's up here!  Heck, can't even get IHOP in this town.  But, I know a couple places that are supposed to be swell for breakfast, so I do have options.

Not even an Original House of Pancakes?  Of course you are probably better off.  I treated myself to pancakes at Dupar’s last time I was in Los Angeles, something I haven’t done in around fifteen years.  It is just so fattening and unhealthy.  But boy was it good.

Does anyone ever feel that being on HHW is like being in an Ionesco play? ? ?

WEL, thanks for the info about NS. I actually know who Rise Stevens was/is but I didn't know anything about her son. Interesting how so many of the children of performers also go down that route.

TD once performed in an Ionesco play entitled, FRENZY FOR TWO, OR MORE.

No, not even one of those.  So I settled for a local place called Smitty's, which specializes in breakfast.  Quite tasty and filling.  I'm thinking that I'll have to try out DuPar's next time I go to L.A... although who knows when the heck that will be.

I always thought it would be interesting to have an IHOP that was the International House of Plays, where troupes of performers went around to the tables and did scenes that the customers chose from the menu -

"I will have a scene of Williams, and a side order of Albee, please."

Perhaps the greatest description of this place I've ever heard, TD. :D

Bald sopranos everywhere I look.  Along with, of course, multitudes of Amy's everywhere I look.

I went back to the Stats page (since BK mentioned it) and I'm still in the Top 10 with Miss Emily breathing down my neck. I needs must post post-haste to stay at number 9.

TomovOz may be sleeping at this time (2:37pm Tuesday, January 6, 2004 in New York City).

Miss Emily is breathing down your neck.  I don't have anyone breathing down my neck although I've asked a few people to do so, they just look at me like I was so much fish.

At HANDY DANDY, while waiting for the theatre to open, a girl in her young teens happened to mention that her father was in the show.  Since I knew it was a two character show I commented that I was a big fan of her grandmother.  She even looked like a young Rse Stevens.  Unfortunately I wasn't sure if her grandmother had passed away or not (I found out later she is still very much alive) so I didn't want to say too much.  Those of you DRs who don't know Ms. Stevens from her days as the Met's reigning Carmen probably know her from her film appearances, most notably in "Going My Way".

As to who is Nicholas Surovey (besides Ms. Steven's son), he is one of those actors you have probably seen dozens of times is secondary roles on stage, in films and on television without knowing his name.  He may be best known as Mike Roy on ALL MY CHILDREN... the one true love of Erica Kane's life until he "died".  Years later when he came back from the dead (it is a soap after all) she had found many other one true loves.

Mea culpa.  I should have phrased my question as "Who is Nicholas Surovy's mother?"

Oh, yes. Congrats to TD. I know a lot of Wilson's work but I don't know this particular piece. I'm admitting a lot of things today.

Sympathetic Magic Lanford Wilson

Drama
Full Length

Cast: 5 men, 3 women: 8 total
Setting: UNIT SET

Winner of the 1997 Obie Award for best play. "Lanford Wilson’s idiosyncratic SYMPATHETIC MAGIC is his best play yet...the rare play you WANT...chock-full of ideas, incidents, witty or poetic lines, scientific and philosophical argument...you’ll find your intellectual faculties racing." —NY Magazine. "The mystery of the unexplored universe and the mystery of artistic creation begin to re-volve around the more familiar mystery of life on earth and why we keep reproducing it. She does something unwise, he does something unforgivable. The result changes them and everyone in their intimate circle, irrevocably. The play ends where it started, with the scientist lecturing about the inexplicable nature of the universe and the "dark matter" of which it seems to be largely composed; only now we’ve experienced what he means. Wilson has made the dark matter in human beings tangible; particularly in the scientist, whom we come to like and understand before he does something monstrous, and who re-mains understandable—and no monster—afterwards. The script is like a fully notated score, next to which most new plays are cursory lead sheets." —Village Voice

THE STORY: Liz Barnard is an anthropologist studying West Coast gangs for behavior similar to African tribes. Her son, Don, is a homosexual Episcopal minister whose parishioners are poor and many sick with AIDS. Liz’s daughter, Barbara, is a gifted sculptress whose current breakthrough show launches a stellar career. Barbara lives with Ian, a brilliant young astronomer and popular university professor who, along with his colorful colleague Mickey, stumbles upon a spectacular discovery at the edge of the galaxy. They want to study the find further, but the chairman of their department, Carl Conklin White, a by-the-book administrator, snatches up this startling find before all the facts are in. Along with this discovery, Ian and Barbara find that despite all precautions, Barbara is pregnant. Having agreed to no children, Barbara prepares for an abortion, but Ian wants to hold off as he has new thoughts about children and carrying on the human race. The mysteries of the universe and of human and artistic creation begin to mix for Ian and his friends. But when Barbara has the abortion, Ian becomes a person he never expected, and in front of friends and family, he attacks Barbara. His actions change everyone around him, mirroring the change in life when discovery leads the way.

I've been watching some of the non-stop Seattle news coverage of the snow.  I know there are some real traffic messes, but I do have to chuckle some when they do non-stop coverage for the 2-1/2" (of snow, people!) in Seattle. :)  Over on my side of the Cascades, it's been snowing lightly for about 3 hours now, but only about 1/2" (of snow, people!) so far.  Supposed to get 6-8" (of snow, people!) later in the day.

You should see what happens in L.A. when we get a light drizzle!

Not sure if it counts as a theatrical souvenir, but my most treasured treasure would have to be the letter from Richard Rodgers.

When I was a callow youth, I invited all my teenager friends over to celebrate Rodgers' 75th birthday.  My mother, who'd never written to a celebrity, wrote RR, figuring he'd like to know.  He wrote back that hearing of her son Noel's party brought him more pleasure than a White House concert where the president had said some very nice things about him.

Congrats to TD on the role! :D

DR Ron - I saw the new Peter Pan and thought it was okay.  Lots of that newfangled fake-looking CGI if you are into that, although it was less annoying because the movie's a fantasy and it's not required to look as real.  Quite a lot of sexual tension for a supposed children's movie, hehe.  The highlights of the movie for me were Jason Isaacs (his Hook was more likable than Peter Pan, IMO) and Ludivigne Sagnier, who made a fine Tink.  As DR Matt has read, the Lost Boys and Princess Tiger Lily were rather wasted as characters, as the story focused mostly on Peter, and Wendy and her brothers.

Like DR Emily, I wouldn't call myself a collector, it's more that I won't throw things away.  So somewhere in the boxes I never touch are programs and ticket stubs from everything I've seen.  I suppose the items most valuable to me are the ones I've waited to get autographed, like the CD booklet from Hairspray, which also stands out in my memory because all of the cast were so darn nice.  I was excited to get my playbill from The Boy from Oz signed, although I didn't actually get to meet Hugh Jackman because he was doing a backstage meet and greet.  :(  I have playbills signed by Kristin Chenoweth and Robert Sean Leonard (not from the same show, obviously) that I am fond of because I really admire both.

Is it possible to collect experiences?  I've met famous people before and felt embarrassed to ask for an autograph or picture, but I love being able to tell the story of having met them.  It's just not as fun when you don't have anything to show for it.

td you were such a cute little tyke and congratulations on getting the role. :)

JMK you have about three inches of snow?  My son’s girlfriend said PSU cancelled school today.

Emily hope you feel better soon.

WEL so glad to know you are feeling better.

Jed if you do make it to Dupars you must try the Boysenberry syrup. It is the reason I go there.  The pancakes aren’t bad either.

I didn’t fall asleep until 4:30 this morning, so I slept in until 8:30, very late for me.  Now I am extremely rushed to get all of my work done today, plus walk Echo before it rains.

Re Peter Pan: Reasonably well reviewed here. Biggest complaint - a Peter Pan with an American accent! Reminds of Disney's Christopher Robin.
And now I am going back to bed.
