All this is leading to a question: how many films/plays can you think of where a well-known figure is distorted from the facts?
Ummm...almost "most" of them, to one degree or another.
If "warts and all" were the norm, the movies/plays/TV shows wouldn't really draw much of an audience.
All humans have different sides to them...public personae are usually cosmetic enhancements of some good qualities, but other traits/qualities/quirks are very much hidden.
It's only when someone discovers those hidden things about "dead" folks of interest do the expose movies/plays/TV shows find a character interesting enough to feature...even if proof of such things is circumstantial.
Frankly, if the worst thing I know about some folks I consider to be friends was the only thing by which I esteemed them, I'd not have them as friends at all.
Movies, books (even biographies), plays and TV shows often exploit such things and leave the impression that these people should only be defined for that weakness.
I grant you there are some heinous things that should not be forgiven...but mostly, the exploited dark sides of such folks are, IMO, more often overexaggerated than truthful.
