My mom was watching the weather on T.V. again. I must have heard the word "haboob" fifty times today.

Jose, if you can find a deal, you'll have the tux for all the future Tony Award shows and other galas I'm sure you'll be going to in the future

-I'm going to look into buying a rental/"used" tux.  If I could splurge on a $800-1000 tux, I would.  But since I can't, and since I don't have to...

If I could use my old one, I would - but I would need to have it taken in quite a bit... Which is a good thing.  :)

I thought it was DR Jane who sang the praises of THE CLOSER. Maybe it was both of you!

You are correct.  I'm very excited the show is returning.  It is nice to look forward to a favortite show now the others are taking their summer breaks.

My DH just recommended this segment about Broadway from today's "All Things Considered."  It made quite a nice break from the packing I've been doing for my 4-night trip to Illinois.

Thanks, Jane!  It's our traditional girls' night treat - Mom always made it on Miss America night for my sister and me (and herself, too).

Do you think a haboob is the same as a hubbub?

Haboob has an arabic origin [Arabic habb, strong wind, from habba, to rush, blow. See hbb in Semitic Roots.]

and Hubbub has an Irish Gaelic origin

[Probably of Irish Gaelic origin; akin to Scottish Gaelic ubub, an interjection of aversion or contempt.]
Word History: It has often been remarked that the early Celtic inhabitants of Britain contributed very little to the stock of English words. Perhaps this should not surprise us, given the difficult relations over the centuries between the people of Germanic stock and the people of Celtic stock in England and Ireland. It seems likely that a certain English contempt resides in the adoption of the word hubbub from a Celtic source, which is probably related to ub ub ubub, a Scots Gaelic interjection expressing contempt, or to abu, an ancient Irish war cry. In any case, hubbub was first recorded (1555) in the phrase Irish hubbub and meant “the confused shouting of a crowd.” In addition to the senses it has developed, hubbub was again used, possibly in an unflattering way, by the New England colonists as a term for a rambunctious game played by Native Americans.

Thanks to dictionary.com

Don't think there are any alternate pronunciations ;)

DR VIXMOM I second DR MBARNUM's recommendation of KOI...MIL GAYA.

"Rakesh Roshan's Kol Mil Gaya is the story of Rohil Mehra who shows the world tht friendship is truly universal.  Sanjay is a scientist obsessed with establishing contact with extraterrestrial life.  He invents many innovative gadgets till finally he succeeds in creating a coputer that can transmit messages to space.

"His foresight becomes reality when as a response to his signals, a spaceship is sighted in the sky.  But before Sanjay can enjoy his success, his wfie Sonia and he meet with an accident which Sonia survives.

"Sanjay's son Rohit is born, a mentally challenged child who faces ridicule in every phase of his life.  His companion is Nisha whose compassion draws her towards Rohit......"

Of course he finds his late father's computer and brings an extraterrestrial down to earth....all with BOLLYWOOD songs and dances....

Think The Absent Minded Professor mixed with ET and Grease....nearly 3 hours long....it is AN evening of entertainment.

My packing is as complete as it can be until tomorrow morning.  I'll check in here while finalizing my IL preparations, and, after that, don't know how much computer access I'll have.  I think my hotel in Naperville/Lisle has a business center, but we'll see.

'night!

I thought there was some arcane law about certain theaters having a set number of musicians having to be paid whether those musicians actually played in the pit or not. (Isn't that in William Goldman's THE SEASON?)

I watched another MURDER SHE WROTE from the first season with a great array of guest stars: Virginia Mayo, John Saxon, Samantha Eggar, James MacArthur, John Astin, Lyle Waggoner. What a line-up!

Then I watched David Fincher's PANIC ROOM. It's a wonderfully tense thriller (even if there are some plot holes).

Well... It's probably related to the same "arcane law" that does not allow me to move my own equipment once it is inside the theatre.  Instead, I have to ask the head electrician to have him send someone to the pit to check out the problem... Then most likely wait for someone else to take care of it.  -However, depending on where the equipment has to be moved, then I may have to ask the Props department to do it.

Sorry for that quasi-semi-rant...

There are arcane laws in all fields, all professions... Heck, there are even some in our own local, state and federal bylaws and regulations.

Alas, there have been some interesting turn-of-events and possible misconduct in the head office of Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians here in New York City.  We're all hoping that the controversy and resulting scrutiny will result in good for all union members.
