As for the Topic of the Day:

Ones I've seen and loved:

Merrily We Roll Along - I did not see the original Broadway production, but I did a professional production of the original version/script. I laughed, I cried... I cried some more. ;-)

Chess - I loved the trio of leads: David Carroll, Judy Kuhn, and Philip Casnoff. And that car chase in the parking garage was very cool.

Big - ...And I have to state that I did not like the subsequent revised tour version of the show. At all!

And since it's considered a flop in some circles: Passion. *I saw it five times, including Opening and Closing Night.

Flops I've seen but did not like:

Shogun - "Hey, I have an idea! Let's combine all the best elements from Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Chess and set the story in Japan..." The first time I honestly felt embarrassed for the actors on stage.

Martin Guerre - Some nice moments scattered amongst a lot of filler. -And, please, a villain should not have a bad wig and a lisp.

In My Life - Well, I liked it... But for all the wrong reasons.

Flops I'm still undecided on:

So... As I was about to fall asleep last night, my cell phone rang... A call from California... What? Who? I answer it... Turned out to be my youngest brother, Jay. He and his girlfriend came into the city last night for a friend's party, and were about to head to Chinatown for some late-night dim-sum. Well, since it was almost 2:00am by the time he called, and I had a matinee to rest up for we decided to meet up for lunch today. Which we did.

We met down at Union Square, then walked over to 6th Ave, and settled in French Roast for brunch. The four of us - we were joined by another one of Jay's friends - all had good meals, although we seemed to notice a couple of tables around us sending plates of food back to the kitchen. Hmm.. In any case, brunch was good, and they were serving a totally refreshing three-berry (strawberry, blueberry and raspberry) lemonade with crushed mint Perfect for a hot summer day.

We had a good visit, and after brunch, we walked over to the theatre. I wasn't able to get my brother and his friends in - we were sold out - but he also had to get ready to head to Philly earlier tonight too. So, I pointed them in the direction of Bleecker street - the girls wanted to go shopping, and I headed in for the final show...

I had a great time at that show. It was one of the first shows that I saw after moving here and was disappointed that it didn't do well.

Our final performance of Dear Edwina went very well, and we had a whole lot of younger audience members in attendance today too. And a couple of those younger audience members were the songs and daughters of cast members. -And I have to say, there were some truly cute kids!

Since most everyone had friends in today to see the show - and since we also had to strike the show as soon as the show ended - we had no closing night "party". However, it's looking like there may be a party/cookout being held next weekend.

It really was a wonderful week. Whew! It all just went by in a week?!?!?!? And, hopefully, this will not be the last time that all of us are working together.

Regarding Jekyll and Hyde, my least favorite broadway show ever. I went to see it with some friends on a whim when it starred Jack Wagner. Because really, how could you not go see Frisco on Broadway? We were hoping that maybe he would break into All I Need, but no such luck. The show was not even enjoyable from a bad show perspective. That was $20 (rush tickets) and 3 hours of my life that I will never have back. My friend's boyfriend spent the entire second act with his head resting back on the seat starring at the ceiling because he could not bear to look at the stage. It wasn't just that Jack Wagner was not vocally up to the role, but the staging and story, even some of the lighting were awful. Just my opinion of course.

Flop that I liked, Dance of the Vampires. That was enjoyable from a bad show perspective.

It was Iris' friend, Jeanne, whom I had met previously at "The Writer's Block" reading at the Drama Book Shop. So, now that I know you're lurking...

As I was reading the question, I went with the first show that popped into my head, and I was able to "answer" the remaining parts accordingly. Matthew and I ended up at ANOTHER GAY MOVIE, which was thoroughly offensive and outrageously funny, borrowing (

) the blueprint of AMERICAN PIE for its format. Some of the cast were excellent farceurs, several were gay celebrities including a good, mostly nude, performance from the bachelor James on BOY MEETS BOY, who seems to have used the reality show for a springboard to performance.

The movie wasn't as funny as I had hoped, but it wasn't a dog I had feared it might turn out to be. The four young leads were used and abused in sundry humiliating ways, and there were some truly funny moments, one featuring gay porn actor Matthew Rush as a circuit party boy, as well as a lot of nudity. I've seen more, much much more, of Richard Hatch now than I ever want to see again.

RAGS (I saw the second to last performance)
SIDE SHOW (I tend to hit that second to last spot)
BIRDS OF PARADISE

Ones I didn't like:
THE NEWS
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (saw the fourth preview and it was better by closing night, which I caught, but it was god-awful)
DANCE A LITTLE CLOSER
CARRIE
CAN-CAN revival of 1981
TEDDY AND ALICE
