Well, the Beach answering machine piped up at 9:15 with a plaintive plea for Woody to hie it in to wrangle etc. and to work a full 8 hours.

He is now "fustigating" over the fact that the management overlords have decreed that four/five of the check-out lanes are to be converted to self-service check-outs. That might work OK in area that has a stable base of customers who can learn the new ropes; but in a store whose clientele is seasonally transient, probably unwise - half the shoppers have trouble working the dang charge card machine without clerk assistance! (Of course idiot programming that tells the customer to "Press OK" when there is no "OK" button doesn't help.)

Here are some factoids, compiled by our wonderful local arrangements chair, about the just-concluded event:

As of 2pm, Thursday, April 19, we had a total of 109 people signed up to participate in the events this weekend:

68 people for Friday, of whom 10 are presenters or guests and 5 are Tiffin branch members here solely to help, giving 53 participants.

94 people for Saturday, of whom 2 are presenters or guests and 4 are Tiffin branch members here solely to help, giving 88 participants.

We have had 4 cancellations.

Of the AAUW/Ohio people here, there are 27 board members, 65 delegates, 10 past presidents, 8 vegetarians, 2 people with allergies to wheat, others with allergies to rice, cinnamon, pears, milk, hot & sweet peppers, and 2 people who are diabetic.

82% have e-mail accounts.

We have earned degrees from at least 62 different colleges.

None are using the Ohio Challenge (50% fee waiver for registrants ages 20-40).

Presenters and guests are coming from Texas, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New Jersey, the Washington, DC, area, and a few from Ohio.

And, we anticipate a profit .

Will we never get to page four?

And, of course, with all this errant and truant behavior today, we're missing out on ever so much fun playing off the symphonic aspects of the notes.

You'd think it was a Sunday.

I haven't mentioned it before because I did not want to get invested emotionally again, but we had another bird birth - same nest as before, above the outdoor light.  This time, four babies were born (I saw all four of their gaping maws being fed by mum and dad).  None of them seem to have perished (the first time this happened there were three and one of them didn't make it and the mom just discarded the dead bird on the patio - lovely).  As you know, the last birth did not have a happy end - the baby birds finally took flight and flew right into the pool.

So, after having done everything anyone could do to make them comfy that first time around, I was quite annoyed when the flight wasn't successful.  This time, I just refused to get involved, although I was careful about not scaring them or disturbing them.  Well, they took flight yesterday - two of them went directly into the pool, but the other two seem to have made it, and since I hear lots of birdsong out there since that event, I'm going to say that it was a successful birth this time.

TCB flew the coop.

April 22: Young Filipino ballet performers jump over pieces of wood on a grassy lawn of the Cultural Center of the Philippines to mark Earth Day in Manila. Organizers said the wood with holes, which symbolize trees toppled by illegal loggers in much of the Philippine countryside, serves to remind people of the danger of the country's rapidly dwindling forest resources due to illegal logging.

'Tis a gorgeous day in Manhattan. We went grocery shopping. We shall have pork chops for dinner tonight and then I shall ride the exercise bike as I watch some bad television.

We are going back outside for a walk in the beautiful sunshine.
