Yes The Procuders was bad. Susan Stroman should never have directed it. Mel should have co-directed it for film. Also they cut The King Of Broadway===big mistake. It tells us all about Max.

Hey, Amy! Your fan letter to Beverley was read on Showtime this weekend. I just finished listening to the show.  I try to listen live on Saturday at 5pm but I was busy this weekend so I couldn't listen until just now. It's near the end of the show. She didn't play one of my reviews but she did like your letter.  That's nice!

Oh, cool! I didn't expect that! I'll try to listen to the archived version!

I believe the worst adaptation may be the new Hairspray movie from the tralers I have seen, but I will judge when I see it. I think the movie version of Tommy is horrible when compared to the stage version,  but is fun in it's own.

An extended trailer of HAIRSPRAY was on the DVD of THE LAST MIMZY that I watched over the weekend. This is by far the longest trailer I've seen for the film, and my heart just sank as I watched it. Travolta is beyond awful in the scenes they showed, and I didn't like Christopher Walken as the husband either.. The music sounded unremarkable to a startling degree, and I liked the score when I saw the show on stage.

DR edi, re yesterday's MOULIN ROUGE posting: the musical is a terrible film, much as I love STRICTLY BALLROOM, but I have no idea what you saw since it hasn't played on Broadway.

Spoo...I meant LA BOHEME!

Good morning!

A little cooler last night and this morning, but not cool enough to turn off the A/C, so no fresh air. Highs in the low 90s all week - Ugh!

PAGE 3 BAD MOVIE MUSICAL DANCE

That was another of the worst things about the movie of A CHORUS LINE: the dancing was just plain awful, and for a show about dancing, it's pretty bad when the dancing is done with fancy edits and weird camera angles.

Hair--I would love to see an extended director's cut of the film. Milos Foreman did it for Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, why not for Hair.

I like HAIR, and I know the editor. I should ask him about the possibilities for an extended cut. BTW, he's composer Raymond Scott's son and is working on a doc about his dad. It should be VERY interesting!

I've admitted this here before, but I'll say again that I actually like the movie of MAN OF LA MANCHA. I wish they had gone with Richard Kiley for the lead since he could have done his own singing (and magnificently, too), for that is what the film lacks for me: the overwhelming passion in the singing of Don Quixote. Loren has it in her singing (which despite transposed notes all over the place is made to work by her skill as an actress).

Charlotte Rae's song was cut from the film.

What song did Charlotte Rae sing/not sing?

Speaking of Richard Kiley, another guilty pleasure musical film of mine: THE LITTLE PRINCE.

And, as others have mentioned, THE APPLE.

I think BYE BYE BIRDIE is a far worse movie musical than MAN OF LA MANCHA because the stage story has been altered enough to become ridiculous, too much of the great score was dumped, and you have a miscast leading actress (Janet Leigh, I'm referring to).

But I agree with the other choices:

A CHORUS LINE, ANNIE, LOST HORIZON, MAME.

Back to an earlier time, they ruined LADY IN THE DARK, too.

Of course, I've admitted here on many occasions that MAME is a guilty pleasure. I know it's a dog, but I always enjoy watching it.

I also enjoyed KISMET, HIT THE DECK, EVITA, RENT, all of which have problems but which are for me pleasurable to watch.

As for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, I found the leads all lacking. Butler's untrained voice was a chore to listen to after awhile (though I enjoyed LOOKING at him; he's got the charisma in spades.)

Emily Rossum had ZERO spark for me, and her voice was so tinny that the songs lost any interest and color they might have had with a more experienced singing actress.

Patrick Wilson had the voice, but his screen persona is so bland that I was pulling for the Phantom at every moment of their encounters. I didn't want him to end up with Christine.

BK, THE LAND OF THE PHAROAHS, is indeed a big piece of ham and cheese on rye, but it is guilty pleasure fun.  And though Ms. Collins comes up short in the acting department, she's very hot to look at.

I disagree with Mike Shayne that Brigadoon should have been shot outside.  I'm a great believer in studio-bound sets. I like the control they give plus you can create an environment you want...sometimes better than real life.  Brigadoon is a fantasy.  To opt for a realistic Scotland (as Kelly wanted to do) over a fantasy Scotland would have been a mistake.  Also, you ever tried to dance over real grass and rock?  Goulet and Peter Falk (in the Van Johnson role) did an outside version of Brigadoon for TV that just sucked all the fantasy right out of it...of course, the locations were probably southern California.

I like Brigadoon.  Its short-comings are in its truncations from the original score.

Another movie musical ruined by miscasting a central actor: ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER. Dump Yves Montand, replace him with Robert Goulet (back then), and you would have had a much better film.

As for the Topic of the Day...

DITTO

;)

I remember watching the opening sequence of the movie version of A Chorus Line with Baayork Lee and Fran Liebergall (the original pianist and musical supervisor).  The howls of laughter and the looks of disbelief after all these years was, well, very entertaining.  :)  -And the stories!  Oh, the stories!

"Rent" - I saw this opening day in DC.  And I even, sadly(?), found myself laughing out loud in a few places.  And that damn CGI-cold breath still irks me!

"Bye, Bye, Birdie" - For years, I had only know the film version, and I never liked the film version.  It took me a few years to actually investigate and see the stage version.  Much, much better.

And I guess I could include the Disney/ABC TV adaptations of The Music Man and Once Upon A Matress here too.

We've talked about the BRIGADOON question before, and I agree with Charles Pogue: the interior sets for me AID the fantasy quality of the piece.

I don't find it a guilty pleasure. I think it's a fine movie. I, too, despair over the omissions of the songs (and Gene Kelly's not-quite-there singing talent for the others), but it's still more than enjoyable.

Tonight on Showtime is a filkmed version of the stage piece SEMPER FI done by a Marine who came out as gay and his experiences in the military. I'll be DVRing it in an early morning Tuesday broadcast so I will watch it tomorrow.

TCM's Gay Images in film continues tonight with TEA AND SYMPATHY, but I'm more interested in STAIRCASE which is being shown at midnight. I've never seen this, and while I understand it's terrible, I'm interested to see what Stanley Donen did with these two male stars in such an offbeat piece of material.

Oh...

DR MusicGuy is due to arrive in NYC sometime this afternoon.  -And I believe I shall be taking him to Splash tonight too! :)

He heads back to Phoenix on Sunday, midday.

Oh - Do any DRs want to meet up with DR MusicGuy before the rest of the gang gets in later this week?

I would really love to, but won't be able to make it into the city except for Thursday evening this week.  :(
