I think most people regard REDHEAD as a star vehicle for Gwen Verdon and without her, no show. (It's among the weakest Best Musical winners ever, at least based on the cast recording.) Also there was a lot of talk in the last years of her life about her diva complex that required no direction. You would have needed a strong director to reign her in for that show.
