Perhaps MattH can help with the character names, but did you ever see the hilarious Reno 911 where the gay policeman was attempting to do a sting with prostitutes and had two women in a hotel room, trying to get them to engage in an unseemly act.  At one point he said, "No, honey, you're indicating."  It was hilarious.

The gay cop's name is Lieutenant Dangle.

I do remember that episode.

Going out to lunch again today, so let me head down and check the mail and clean the bedroom areas before heading out to eat.

Wow, DR Ben, looking at your first link really brought back memories. That was indeed the basal reading series my elementary school used. How well I remember SINGING WHEELS, ENGINE WHISTLES, and RUNAWAY HOME in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades!

I was an "Alice and Jerry"-trained first-grader.  Alice, Jerry AND JIP!

My mom still has both books we used in that class.

One curiousity for me, though, is that I vividly recall the "other" first-grade class (Johnston Elementary School had TWO -- count 'em 2 -- first-grade classes!) had the Dick and Jane books.

I named my dog "Nacious," so I could say to people: This is my pug, Nacious.

I named mine "E-Bag", so I could say to people: This is my dog, E-Bag!

Another definition of "beat" deals with the script and your preparation as an actor. Breaking a scene into "beats" is a standard exercise in acting classes. A beat in a scene is usually a point where something is happening or being discussed. The beat changes when the action or discussion changes to something else. For example (a crude example but nontheless an example), if you're talking to someone about getting into law school that's a scene beat. If your mother comes into the room and tells you that your grandmother died and you have to prepare for her funeral, the beat has changed to something completely different. It's all intertwined with objectives, what the characters are talking about, etc. Beats can change quickly throughout a scene, depending on the dialouge and what the actors have decided they want to get from the scene. It's all very fluid.

And you thought acting was easy. All ya hadda do was get up on stage and learn your lines. No, way, Jose (or Singdaw or Ron). You gotta work to make it believable
