TCB - The 3:00 show was over about 5:25 or so, and they're taking a 6:20 train back into the City.

Good Evening!

Well... I ended up back at Carnegie Hall this afternoon.  Kathleen Battle was making a sort of "I'm ba-ack" appearance, and since the cheap seats were really cheap, well, I figured what-the-frell?

It was an interesting recital.  She sang relatively well in a dress that she kept getting caught up in, literally kicking it to the side regularly throughout the recital.  And, yes, her accompanist had his foot on the soft pedal the whole time it seemed.

Ms. Battle has quite the "history" and reputation - both good and downright awful - but, I have to say, she still has quite a fan-base - VERY vocal.  The program was basically a sort of "greatest hits" for her.  A lot of chestnuts from the classical art song repertory, along with her requisite Negro spirituals.  Frankly, I thought she gave the classical rep a bit of a short shrift.  Yes, she sounded pretty, but some of the interpretations were quite mannered and "literal" - lots of hand gestures.  It was until the second half of the recital where it finally seemed that she just wanted to SING!  In any case...

She did sound lovely, and she still has that bright, pingy, clear soprano.  However, I could tell there was some natural "color" that comes with growing older that she was trying to avoid... hide...deny(?).  She also took some of the longest between-song pauses I've ever experienced in a song recital.  Sometimes she was waiting for people in the audience to get settled.  Other times she was checking her lyrics from the crib sheet she had on the piano, or she was being fed them by her accompanist - sometimes during the songs!  -At least it appeared that way to me.  And there were times it just seemed like she was waiting for the song to come to her - or, at the very least, make her fans come closer to her by some manipulated anticipation.

Although, since I'm partially deaf from the "Brava's" being shouted by the two gentlemen behind me after almost every single number - she was also greeted with a partial standing ovation before she sang a note - maybe I'm just being too cynical.

Back from a good work session.  We reblocked I Need An Earthman the way it was at LACC and it's now much easier for our Yoni to sing it, so I think she's happy.  We worked through some specifics again and it seems like we're all on the right road.  And now, it's just a lot of run-throughs to tighten and hone and find new things.  I'm still unsure how to approach the scene shifts, which are all done by the company.  In LA they were very fluid and done in quarter light, but I really didn't have to do anything special.  In NY, Adam added fright and business to them, and I recreated that here and it's just not working for me.  So, I'll probably go back to just having the scene shifts done simply and as quickly as possible.

I had a long conversation with David Wechter about the band situation and I've had an e-mail volley with the head of the Festival, who completely understands the dilemma.

bk - I know it's been posted before, but just exactly when does The Brain from Planet X go up again?  -I haven't been back out to L.A. since I did What If, and since I just got the latest issue of "Los Angeles Magazine" which features "LA's 75 Best Restaurants", well... ;)

That's a  relief.  I thought maybe they were doing the unabridged version.

I'm doing a bird watching walking tour in Central Park with my friend Pam on Saturday morning. I'm sure it won't measure up to Jose's Central Park tour, but I'm still looking forward to it.

I think a bird-watching tour in Central Park sounds like great fun! Take good binoculars!

Well, the prospective minister came this weekend and preached this morning; the good news is that we voted to call him to be our minister and he accepted.

Donations are now being accepted, so that DR Jose can finance his tour of the top restaurants in Los Angeles on his next trip to the left coast.

I think so, too, DR Laura, and am eager for a full report from DR Cillaliz!

Once again, I'm on a quest for an apartment for DH Richard and myself for Labor Day weekend and a few days before.  The place we rented last October isn't available then, so I've inquired about another at 53rd and Broadway.

May 2nd is also the day our new store, in Longneck, opens.  And we're hoping to have our grand re-opening after our remodel on the same day!

That's for everyone who can't make it to the Heim of Ana.   ;)

Oh, you probably wanted more than a simple yes or no answer.

Yes, der B and I have met Fay.  She's very active in the community, what with running the downtown business organization.  Unfortunately, our paths cross infrequently - she either shops at one of the other supermarkets, lets her Bonnie do all the shopping, or the two of them starve.  But I don't think it's the third option, as she has a very healthy figure.

Or they may be frequent diners at the restaurants in town, of which there are many.

And yes, her writings are very much like she is in person.  In fact, I boned up on her columns at Camp Rehoboth before we made the move, to get a feel for the community.

Oh, Herfy's!!!!

When we lived in Seattle, my brothers and I loved it when our Mom took us to Herfy's after school.  Their kid's meals were the best.  Not only did you get a toy, but you also got a punch-coupon good for a free soft-serve cone for dessert.  -And I still remember my Mom asking the people behind the counter to check the other kid's meal boxes for other toys whenever any of us ended up with toy we already had.  ;)
