I think a bird-watching tour in Central Park sounds like great fun! Take good binoculars!

I think it will be fun too.  I'm not as into bird watching as my friend Pam, but I love the peacefulness of birdwatching. The birds are ok too

Well, the prospective minister came this weekend and preached this morning; the good news is that we voted to call him to be our minister and he accepted.

Congrat to you and your congregation. Hope it works out well

I think so, too, DR Laura, and am eager for a full report from DR Cillaliz!

Once again, I'm on a quest for an apartment for DH Richard and myself for Labor Day weekend and a few days before.  The place we rented last October isn't available then, so I've inquired about another at 53rd and Broadway.

Labor day? hmmm.

LOL, Cilla. Sorry about that, but TCB did sort-of ask (in his own cute way) how long the production was.  :)

I'll let you know about the tour. I know the tickets are $15.00 and I think it starts at 9:00 AM.  I think it's sponsored by Central Park. I'm not sure though. Pam got 3 tickets, one for the friend she always goes to see when she's in NYC and one for me.  Pam and I have gone to NACDL meetings in NYC in the past and shared a room to cut expenses. We generally do about one thing together and the rest of the time she's off with her best friend from college and I'm off with my friends. We see each other here fairly often so it's a really good deal for both of us.   She and my friend Gretchen are hard core birders. They are trying to get me involved.  I'm not that into watching birds, although  I wouldn't mind photographing some, but I do like to just go along for the walk or ride

Today I got all my laundry done.  I went to the office and brought home some work, then I raked all the flowerbeds in the back yard, cleared the dead wood out of the bushes, raked the back yard and put it all in bags and containers for pick up. I need to run to the store and get a couple things, then it will be time for John Adams.  I'll have to do some office work after that's over.    It feels good to be so productive.

What a long day! What an exhilirating day! What a good time I've had! It was long, though: Toyland from 9 to 12:30, during which I finished photocopying charts for Lady of the Slipper and located one that was missing from the Appendix materials, a wonderful train ride with Skip in which the turmoils of the cosmos were discussed and pondered, a great play in a production that should have been greater, a short visit with Maureeen, and a wonderful train ride back wth Skip. I'm very tired now.

I think that there were wonderful moments in the production, but I also felt the director let the cast and the material down at times: the moment I rememebr best is in Act Two when the power in the apartment has been turned off, and everyone's supposed to be dealing with only candelight for illumination. Laura is showing the Gentleman Caller her high school yearbook and the picture of him in the operetta; they're standing above the candelabra which is sitting on the floor. If all the lghts are out, shouldn't they be looking at the photos close to the candles?

It's a great play and its power still kicks you in the gut, and I had a wonderful time seeing it.  And I dearly love Maureen.

I've just pulled dinner from the oven, a sort of tamale pie which I've done before.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it is a tamale pie.  But it's very tex-mex in style.  And der Brucer liked it last time.

Meanwhile, he's watching yet another Law & Order.  Strange, how many cop shows he watches, but we don't know any cops personally.

(Of course, I don't know any space aliens, but I'm a Doctor Who fan.)

Would you post your recipe (assuming it contains earth products)?

Ah, just found the website for the Chance Theater.  According the website, the show runs May 3-June 8.  -With special previews on May 1 and 2.

I believe they state the 8th for the usual reasons - so they can say extended by popular demand.  Pretty standard here in LA.  It's always been the 15th.

As to that list of LA restaurants, not only have I not been to any of them except for Spago, I've never HEARD of any of them.  Cut?  Who names these restaurants?  It sounds like the usual trendy horse manure from the usual trendy LA dining "critics."  I guarantee you, half of these jernts will be gone within two years.

So, I put on Taras Bulba.  It begins.  Four minutes later I'm asleep.  I wake up five minutes before it's over - THAT'S comedy.  Nice transfer, though.

"It Might Be Tamale Pie."

Preheat oven to 350.

Chop up an onion and three rashers bacon, saute in a large skillet.  Add 1 lb. ground beef, crumbled, and brown.  Drain.  Add chile powder, ground cumin, garlic powder (or fresh garlic) to taste.

Spread contents of two 4 oz. cans chopped green chiles and one 2 oz. can olives over meat mixture, then sprinkle with grated cheese to cover (about 1/2 of a 2 cup bag, maybe a little more.)

In a bowl, mix 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup corn meal, six eggs (!!!), a pinch of salt, and the chopped white parts of a bunch of scallions.  Pour the mixture over the meat mixture, spread to cover, then sprinkle some more cheese over the whole.

Bake for about 30 minutes or so.  Pull from oven, let cool a little, cut into wedges and serve.

This SHOULD serve six.  Only der B and I are hearty eaters, and it never serves us as six servings.

I dunno, BK.  Some of these restaurants have been around for some time:

Water Grill, Saddle Peak Lodge, Campanile, Spago, Valentino, Lucques, Patina, all restaurants I'd heard of before der B and I moved, just off the top of my head.

Osteria Mozza/Pizzeria Mozza have the provenance of Mario Batali's successes in NYC, added to Nancy Silverton's success with La Brea Bakery - it's their partnership driving the two restaurants.  (I still fondly remember a dinner der B and I shared at Po, Batali's original NYC outpost pre-FoodTV fame - yummers to the max!)

Craft - don't remember who's in charge, but this is the LA outpost of a successful chain that started in New York, and has also travelled to Las Vegas, Dallas and Atlanta.

These guys have deep pockets, and won't be disappearing soon.

Meanwhile, you weren't familiar with Mimi's Cafe until about a week or so ago.  Mimi's Cafe has been around since, like, ages ago.

You might want to grab a copy of the magazine, and read.  And maybe Jose will take you with him to sample the food at one or two of the jernts.

Well, you can hope.   ;)
