Poor Emily!  You will be pleased nevertheless, I am sure.

OH HEY - they fooled us - it is the 1958 Miss America Ceremony to crown the 1959 Miss America!

Mr BK the judges would astound you!

JRand and Jed: feel better soon!

A little girl at the 7-9 year old kids' dress rehearsal tonight said the funniest thing to me. (The dress rehearsal was for the showcase that the kids will perform this weekend at the performing arts academy where I work.) I tried so hard not to laugh because she was so serious. First, the drama kids got into a discussion about marriage, which turned into a "Miss Laura, are you married?" When I said no, one girl turned to me and said, "You can marry my uncle! He's 27 and plays basketball and has muscles this big. (formed large circle with her hands) [I think] he's a very attractable ( :)) man, even in the nude." I almost fell over. Luckily, I regained my composure quickly and changed the subject.

Oh! I had a happy day! My aunt gave me a very nice Christmas present--a ticket to the Philly Pops Broadway concert with Sutton Foster. I also bought a ticket to Sutton's first solo concert. I have a seat at a front row table. I can't wait!

JRand...A 1958 Miss America Ceremony to crown Miss America 1959?

That would make it the Miss America 1959 Ceremony, wouldn't it????

Sort of the reverse of the 2002 Oscars being presented in 2003?

Wooooohooooooooooooo!!!  ;D

Miss Alabama just sang Honey Bun and did the dance she learned in Miss Ludie's basement!

Next up "Claire de Lune" - very few missed notes!  But the OH BROTHER!....a dramatic recitation from Miss Iowa!  Whew!  :P

Made up for it by a commercial for the Philco Slender Seventeener! Briefcase television!  Mr BK I loved the story of Benjamin Kritzer getting his S T E R E O phonograph in Kritzerland - but I don't recall what kind of TV he had in his room......

As I walked in a little while ago after doing errands, the phone was ringing. It was the bank saying that I had left my daybook there. Every phone number of anyone I know in the entire world is in that book. And the bank is now closeduntil morning! Which means that tonight I can only phone people whose numbers I know by heart. I feel cut off from the world. (Not that I had intention of calling people tonight - but the POSSIBILITY is now gone. Aaaarghhh!)

Emily - why do you refuse to go to the theater by yourself? If you want to see something and the others don't, then go see it. I actually find there's something quite cozy and secure in sitting alone in the dark as the action unfolds on stage. And during the play you wouldn't be talking to your companion anyway. As a bonus, theaters are great places for people-watching at intermission. So why miss out?

Wow - as I was writing to Emily, I suddenly lost my breath, my heart started to beat like crazy and I almost passed out. Now I really wish I had my Daybook. (I'm feeling a little better now. )

Well they crown the Miss America at the end of one year so she will have her reign in that year.  That is why there was no Miss America in 1950.  They went from the ceremony in 1949 for Miss America 1949 - to the ceremony in 1950 to crown Miss America for 1951! ;D

Great story DR LauraII you should have asked for a photo!  ;)

DR PANNI - I know what you mean.  But think how much more of a panic it would be - IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW WHERE IT WAS!!????   :'(

Glad you like the new pic DR MAYA!!  ;D Thanks.

Emily:  Please forgive my ignorance (and I saw the original cast of Rent), but what is a swing?

A swing is a performer that can fill any role in the ensemble at a moments notice. He or she must know everyones part including lines, songs and choreography. They don't appear in the show but I believe they stay at the theater just in cast. They are one big ass understudy

Well...actually Anita Bryant was the best singer of the lot, with a really cute song!

Mary Ann Mobley did UnBelDi dropping her dress and going into There'll Be Some Changes Made and went WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY flat, but she was cute as a button, and her opera was on pitch!

Taye Diggs is going to be WICKED's Fiyero from Christmas to Jan 18.

No Norbert.  Sigh.  The Gods are against me.

DR Emily: I know you must love Norbert, but TAYE DIGGS is amazing. I saw him as Black in the Wild Party and thought he was beyond great. I think you will be surprised. Plus he is a big star now. He will be great.

Just one thing about shows on Broadway. I know you will have your heart set on seeing certain performers. But some of them miss often. So just don't be too disappointed.

Don't worry SWW - I will be enjoying myself thoroughly WICKED or no-WICKED.

The thing is I am travelling with two very downer people (i.e. Andrea and my other friend) who have not been able to get excited about ANY of the plans I have tried to made (and who haven't SUGGESTED anything either).  So hearing about the one thing I reaaaalllly wanted to see kinda disappointed me more than it would otherwise since right now I am my one person cheer squad.

These same people also are either cheap or uninterested enough to accompany me to more than one show (and I refuse to go alone) so I have to make the one I do go see amazing.

Oy.  But I am still really excited to go.  Really.   It's just the stress of being the only person of my travelling entourage who has any interest in making any serious commitments to plans or to the one thing I actually want to do  :(

DR Emily: I don't care what DR Andrea and your other friend want to do, but you simply must go to see as many shows as you can. Going alone is easy. I've done it before a number of times. I've even done it when my sister and I wanted to see different shows.

Plus it will be much easier to get a ticket.

You love the theatre. I'm not sure how many shows you can fit in. But I think you will be disappointed if you only go to one.

Going with other people requires compromises. But I don't think you should short change yourself.

I don't think anyone answered the question "what is a swing?".  A swing is an understudy for the chorus... someone who can take over all the various roles (the "track") for a number of different chorus people.  Most shows have a couple of swings of both gender.  The first time I can recall seeing the term used was in the Playbill® for the original BYE BYE BIRDIE, but now you see them listed (with pictures and bios) for almost every Broadway musical that features a large ensemble.

Charles Schulz must be turning in his grave at the new Peanuts special.  I immediately followed it with the DVD of the original Charlie Brown Christmas to take the bad taste out of my mouth.

I'm finally online again. I hate Adelphia internet services.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BK! I wish you the sweetest of nights, and the finest of days...;).

MBarnum: I love your new pic. Tres beau!

Panni: I certainly hope you get good response to your writing! ANd I also hope you get your notebook back! I hate losing things so important as that...my friend Renae lost her cell phone this morning. I took mine out and offered to call hers, to see if anyone would answer it, but it was on silent! Kind of a bummer.

Em: I agree with Panni. Go by yourself if you really want to go! What other shows were you wanting to see?

Re: Yesterday's notes: I don't really remember how I found BK...I *think* it was through Juliana's Journal, but it might have been earlier...I can't remember. But I emailed Bruce and he emailed me back, telling me to join the party here at HHW, and I've been here ever since. I remember being SO intimidated when I first "arrived". You were all so smart and ready to educate me!

And I also want to tell a little story that you might not have heard on the BRS. After being here for a few months, I told Laura II how wonderful this site was. For those of you that remember, this was during BK's "KISS MY ASS!" phase. Well our Wauwa thought BK was serious, and didn't want to post in case he became angry with her.

Isn't she cuuuuuuute? :) I am so getting yelled at when I call her in a few minutes.

I got my show choir dress/tights/shoes/bloomers today. The dress is very red and sparkly and flowy and sequiny. I like it :). But since I'm so frickin' tall (ERG), I have to get the straps lengthened. I look like I'm wearing a little girls dress, it's above my knees!

Robert Redford: The Horse Whisperer.

I'm kidding.

BTW- DR Emily: Did you pre-order Wicked from amazon.ca.  I did and have been watching my account daily (because sometimes they switch the delivery dates). Anyhow, even though it's only being released on dec 16th, they had no release date mentioned. Yet they had said "would ship in 3 to 5 weeks". Well today they changed that to "5 to 7 weeks".

I decided to email them to find out what the problem was. I clearly stated that the release date was next tuesday.

While I think the customer service people are getting more and more helpful, they continuely surprise me. They don't know how to read.  She sent back comments about how they didn't know the release date. But when they did, they would update their system and let me know. So I assume they will figure this all out shortly after next tuesday.

The other bizarre thing is that she said she would release the rest of my order (without my even asking).

I will say this though, at least they are no longer sending me form letters.

Ha ha, re: amazon.ca I spoke too soon :)

I just went to check out my account. The guy said he would ship my 2 books now. So I look and one book is ready for shipping. And now the other book and Wicked say they are due out dec 12 to 15th.

I'm not gonna say anything and see what they do.
Small amusement :)

I think I will need to take back my promise not to email them. Sometimes I cannot believe the things they do.  My bill was supposed to be 40$. When they shipped the partial order (which was supposed to be free shipping) they forgot to adjust the shipping charges. So now it shows as 62$.

Okay I know this is easily fixed, but man, this is not the first time they've done that :(

Good night all.

Boy, I'll say you're frustrated, and mightily!  You just accused JRand of being me!

Best wishes for a safe trip, and I hope you get to do at least some of the things you want.  Growl if you have to (judiciously, of course).  And make a point of enjoying what other people insist you all have to do; it'll make it easier for them to agree with your choices.

Norbert Leo Butz stole the show from the stars of THOU SHALT NOT and got a Tony Award nomination for it. He was a part of that Tony year where all five supporting musical actor Tony nominees were SO talented and SO deserving that it was impossible to pick a winner: Norbert for THOU SHALT NOT, Marc Kudisch for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, Brian D'Arcy James for SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, Gregg Edelman for INTO THE WOODS, and the eventual winner Shuler Hensley for OKLAHOMA.

Well, heading off to bed. I did enjoy A MIGHTY WIND (I liked folk singing back in the 1960s, so I got the parody of the movie but also really enjoyed the songs, too). I don't think it approached BEST IN SHOW as a comedy film, but I did appreciate all of these fine actors taking on another set of new personas SO different from the roles they played in SHOW and also in WAITING FOR GUFFMAN.

Good night, all.

Good evening/morning....

I truly just skimmed over today's posts...

I'm tired.  Been a long day.  Good - for the most part.. film at 11:00...  And my sciatica chose to flare up again today too... and since I had a two hour drive.. and a three hour show today...  -I'm a very happy camper... NOT!   >:(  It's not too bad, still bearable, but not what I needed right now..

-Oh my, Oh my... I'm ranting...  Hmmm...

Well, I'll check back in the morning and read today's posts...

Oh, and we had an earthquake in Virginia today...  I didn't feel it, but talked to a bunch of people who did...

Hmm.. Maybe that's what did my back in - the earthquake...

Until tomorrow... Goodnight.

OH - DR Emily... Check your mail.

Isn't it weird that we haven't broken two hundred posts in four days?  Not that's it's easy to break two hundred posts - that's a lot of wood lying around.

Michael Shayne - the DVD Awards: I am a member of that "Academy" and that is why I was getting all those bags full of DVDs for the last few months.  They are trying to be a presence, although to what end I have no idea.  I was invited to the awards ceremony at the Wiltern, but I couldn't get up the energy to actually go.  I did vote, however.

Tonight I've been watching the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica."  I remember the original series, but not enough to feel that a reimagining it is a bad thing.  So far, it's pretty good (there's a half left).  It's a completely different concept of the story, but I like it, although I don't quite understand what happens to the Cylons' bodies when they "die" (that's not really a spoiler...you find out something about that early on).  If watching it a couple more times doesn't help I'll have to wait for the regular series to start...assuming that it does.  I'd read that it's not for sure that the series is actually going to happen.

DR Tom From Oz:  Anita Bryant was second runnerup to Miss America for 1959.

I was and am correct about that.

However, if the pageant for 1959 billed itself as Miss America 1958 because it was held in that year, that's a totally different thing.
