It's Wednesday... not only is it Ask bk day, it's the day when the gardners come to our complex and do their thing. Otto, being the curious little guy he is, sits at the window and barks at the gardners passing by and then barks at the piles of grass (or whatever) when we go for our walk. He's sleeping now, maybe he'll sleep the whole time they are here! One can only hope.

Frankly I have my doubts as to whether Head On can do anything for a headache. It sounds like medicine show stuff. But, maybe it cools the skin and provides some soothing balm.

I mean the commercial cleverly makes zero claims whatsoever. Just tells you where to apply it.

Spoo! I didn't mean the winner. I'm so sorry. DR Rodzinski! I meant one of the other winners was a name I did not recognize, and I wonder if/when he ever posted on this site.

Yep! Thank you, DR Matt H! BTW, I loathed and detested the mean spirited and too-long BROTHERS GRIMM., which I truly vwanted to like. I did like Mr Ledger, but felt no European/Teutonic vibe from Mr Damon at all. I bought a copy of THE GIRL MOST LIKELY to see Ms Ballard and Mr Kelly Brown, father of Lesley Brown, my goddaughter's ballet teacher, and dancing lead of Leroy Anderson's GOLDILOCKS. I believe Tom Skerrit's character in THE TURNING POINT is basedon Mr Brown.

Inquiring minds asked about current house pix, presumably expecting wonderful flood shots.

Well, all of Sussex County (the lower half of the State of Delaware) has been decalred a disaster area. There is major flooding in towns like Milton and Seaford (both about a 30 minute drive). We at Rehoboth, however, have escaped most of the deluge. The storms move from the Carolinas up the Atlantic seaboard in a NE direction - and the eastren edge oftem misses Rehoboth on the far east coast.

So, while the rest of the state is deluvian, here we are this morning:

Looking down the block from the mailbox. (The dirst on the road is from the unpaved driveway of a house up the hill to the right).

Called to activate a credit card yesterday, and I got a human operator. Now I used to activate credit cards for a living during college in Athens, GA, so I asked this kid where he was. He says, "I'm on the East Coast." Oh, have you been getting rain, I ask. "No," he says. "I've heard there's been a lot of rain, but we haven't gotten any here." So I ask him where on the East Coast he is. "Uh, Kentucky," he says.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Several city officials on Tuesday sharply criticized a planned bikini contest to raise money for spaying pets, saying the "Hooters for Neuters" event was degrading to women.

Hosted by the Hooters restaurant chain, the July 13 fundraiser will donate money to the spay and neuter programs at Los Angeles Animal Services.

"Are we going backward here?" said City Controller Laura Chick. "We are a city with all kinds of progressive programs that empower women and end discrimination in the workplace, and now we're being connected with a Hooters bikini contest. It isn't right."

Councilwoman Jan Perry said the department's attempt to be creative in telling pet owners to sterilize their animals "crosses the line."

"I was surprised and amazed with the photograph on the flier, and I don't think it projects a good image for the city of Los Angeles," Perry said.

Also appalled at the idea that the home of Malibu, Santa Monica, and Venice Beach might me associated with bikini clad women, the LA Times chimed in:

In an interview Tuesday, hours before he dropped his plan, Boks said Hooters and other businesses came up with the idea of the bikini contest and approached his agency about being the beneficiary. He agreed because of his goal to reduce the number of animals euthanized in the city's six shelters.

"Animal Services has a five-year goal to end euthanasia. It is going to take an entire community to do that," Boks said. "We are merely the beneficiaries of this event; we are not sponsoring it. The long-term purpose of participating is to save lives of animals.

"Are some people going to be offended that we're working with Hooters?" he added. "Obviously, and I apologize for that. Hooters is a legitimate business — it's not pornographic — and they're helping us. I hope other businesses in the community will be inspired by them."

Not long afterward, Boks issued a news release, stating:

"I have reconsidered Animal Services' role as beneficiary" of the event "and have decided we will not be accepting any donations."

In the last year, the city has euthanized about 19,500 animals, Boks said — an improvement over years past but still far too many, he believes.

I guess "outside the box" doesn't include boobs!

You're being a tad harsh. A simple geographic breakdown of the US would be:

East Coast - Atlantic to the Mississippi
Mid West - Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains
West Coast - the Rockies to the Pacific

The terms "East Coast" and "West Coast" are commonly used without regard to contiguous waters.

Forgot to mention an interesting thing about Ozu's An Autumn Afternoon. Every Ozu film I've seen (including the 1934 version of Floating Weeds) has the exact same sort of title sequence - the titles appearing over a piece of what looks like burlap. Every single film, rather like Woody Allen's titles always white on black in the same font (what was the first film he did that on?). So, it was quite strange to see that on Ozu's final film the titles took place over drawings of trees.

I couldn't find it in my dictionary with the "-ence" ending. So I wondered what it meant if it wasn't "sustenance".

BK, I noticed that some Kenji Mizoguchi films have been released on region 2 now...one, STREET OF SHAME is a favorite of mine...it was on VHS waaaaay back in the 80s..I am hoping it will make DVD here, someday.

But Ohio is considered Mid-west and that is east of the Mississippi
