Well, I got my TV's projector lamp switched out this morning. A very simple job: took about ten minutes, and now I've got what amounts to a brand new TV.

I'd like to go ahead today and get ON BORROWED TIME dubbed to a DVD-R. That will probably be my afternoon's viewing.

I'm saving THE GOOD EARTH for tomorrow since it's so long.

Yes! I agree that THE FIRM is way better in the movie version! How are ya feeling, Elmo???

I would SWEAR I attended Heather MacRae's concert last night... but reading the notes, I can only surmise that (a) I didn't; or, (b) I'm just not one of the interesting people who attended. Same thing last week... maybe I only dream I hear these ladies singing live...

Anyway, I dreamed that I heard Heather MacRae sing a cabaret act last night. In my dream, she was simply stupendous. The voice is clear and rich and flexible and fresh and young! Her phrasing is sensitive and individual. She is a powerful presence, more charismatic than ever. Surry With The Fringe On Top was spellbinding. She is a magician.

Other good film adaptations I enjoyed:
   A ROOM WITH A VIEW
   MAURICE
   GREAT EXPECTATIONS (David Lean)

And, yes, DR MattH!  ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is a wonderful version of the book as well.

Actor George Clooney and partner director Steven Soderburgh separate.

I guess the romance went sour.

I had read about Jack Warden last night, and his obit was in the newspaper this morning. Won a well deserved Emmy for BRIAN'S SONG. An excellent actor.

OMG! I can't believe I left out MAURICE and A ROOM WITH A VIEW, two of my all-time favorite movie adaptations. For my money, MAURICE is the best gay-themed movie ever made.

Quite a few of the films they did together lost a lot of money (I'm thinking of SOLARIS especially.) The OCEANS movies did fine, but little else they worked on together made back its money.

Log this in the "theatre is a small world" category, BK. MOLLY CHEEK?!!!  When you see her again, asks her if she ever gets back to scenic Odessa, Texas, and the Globe of the Great Southwest.  I was a member of the summer company there, when she was dating an actor named Wayne Nary.  She was not a member of the company but was out staying with Wayne during the summer.  Molly was really nice and quite lovely.  Wayne and I did a scene in MacBeth every night.  He was playing MacDuff and I was Malcolm.  I was a big fan of Molly's when she was on the first Gary Shandling show.  Please give her my regards the next time you see her.

I agree with Woody about PRINCESS BRIDE.  I liked the film better than he apparently, but it is not a patch on the book which is perfect and magical.

I think the Stewart Granger movie of SCARAMOUCHE is much more fun than the book, largely because they keep him in the theatre longer in the movie...It is really only a small part of the book.

Books that have never been adapted properly to the screen TARZAN, SHE, KING SOLOMON'S MINES.

BEAU GESTE; THE MALTESE FALCON; & THE THIN MAN are three of my favourite books to movies.

Even smaller world, BK, doing a google on Molly, I realized she's in American Pie 2 in a scene with pal, Larry Drake.  I've never seen the film.  If you see her, ask her what happened to Wayne Nary...I googled him too and came up empty.

Molly Cheek turned up today in my Trivia Contest searches (she is not, I believe, part of the correct answer, so fear not, spoiler-phobes).

For those who may not have seen my late, late post last night:  there is, unbelievably, a steel drum ensemble recording of Le Sacre, which I heard on XM last night.  I am still sitting here mouth agape 12 hours after having heard it.  It's surprisingly wonderful.

Bad adaptations:  Siddhartha.  Oy.

I don't care what anyone says, I love the musical Lost Horizon, every camp-fest second of it.

Jack Warden co-starred with my nephew's soccer coach John Rubinstein (no joke) in Crazy Like a Fox, which was an enjoyable little show in the Murder, She Wrote vein.

I find THE PRINCESS BRIDE extrememly watchable and magical. Probably one of the movies I've seen the most in my life. But I never read the book, so there was nothing to be disappointed by.

Jack Warden is in a movie I believe is an improvement on the book, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY.

A COLD DAY IN AUGUST, THE LOVED ONE and CATCH-22 are ones that aren't entirely faithful to their books, but I think are good cinematic adaptations.

GRAPES OF WRATH has the perfect cast, the perfect look, it just leaves out a lot of key moments that they couldn't include at that time.

Bad ones:
Orson Welles' THE TRIAL.

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountaintop, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Khalil Gibran - "The Prophet"  :'(

Jack, I am very intrigued by your friend Janice, and what a beautiful photo of her. I am so sorry. Take care!

BK, why did I not realize that Heather MacRae was the daughter of Gordon MacRae???? Did I miss that or did it just get lost in the wind tunnels of my mind?

And she was in an episode of FLIPPER! Which makes he grand in my book!!!

Boy, did I sleep late!

Yes, Penny and I discussed Mr. Warden last night.  I only met him briefly at one of the Crazy Like A Fox cast parties.

PennyO was there last night and the week before - she didn't dream it!  I, of course, am senile when writing the notes late at night and what she'll realize is that I've only listed people who were in the front section - my mind goes blank when I think of the back section.  Also in attendance (in the front section yet), Buddy Bregman.
