Good morning, all!  I'm pondering a trip to Toyland this morning or working here on The Brain until noon and heading over to the NYPL.  I think the Brain has me under its spell.  Four  or five errors?

Actually, BK called me last night while I was off to dinner with my friends Alice and Cathie with some fixes in the Act One finale.  I think I may make those fixes this morning and lay out my last number for Act One!  My goal is to have everything I have here on "The Brain" laid out before next Tuesday when I fly to Ohio to see family for a week.

DR Tomovoz, look out for that tentacle grabbing the Golden Gate Bridge.  And what's the shiney globe? MBarnum!

TOD:  Warner Brothers cartoons are still my faves.  I feel their wit and sense of the world's absurdities left the other studios in the dust.  I feel the same about Rocky, Bullwinkle and their ensemble.

I loved the Disney Studio's animated features, but I think the cartoons weren't so much fun.

I saw the San Francisco pre-Broadway "Lestat" and simply don't recall him by name.  Which part did he play?

Stanek played the thankless role of Louis; thankless in the books, thankless in the Neil Jordan film and thankless in the musical.  Who really wants a whiner?  I'm sure DR Jose can tell us all more about Louis; whom Dot says everybody loves. . .

I never found the MGM animated cartoons very funny either, including Tom and Jerry.

But the WORST were the Terry Toons and the Paramount films that included Baby Huey and Little Lulu.  Ugh.

But my absolute favorite is:
One Froggy Night (?)
The frog that sings and dances only for the person who finds him.

One Froggy Evening - Chuck Jones

Michigan J. Frog - voiced by Bill Roberts

IMDB:
Quote
A workman finds a singing frog in the cornerstone of an old building being demolished. But when he tries to cash in on his discovery, he finds the frog will sing only for him, and just croak for the talent agent and the audience in the theater he's spent his life savings on.

Beaky Buzzard was the buzzard whose elevator didn't go to the top floor and very funny he was too, always singing, I believe:  "I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee, won't my mama be so brought of me..."

Besides, the usual array of wonderful Warner regulars, I was always fond of the little owl who sang, "I loveta singa about the moona and the juna and the springa" and the little kitten who sang, "I wear my green fedora for Dora"...a cartoon I've only seen once in my life, I think, but I loved and would love to see again.

Good morning!

Gorgeous but cold day here. Lows in the 30s this morning, and I didn't cut my heat on before I went to bed last night and woke up to a 54 degree house. I have since rectified that situation. It's going to be low 30s and high 50s all week, so I knew I'd need heat to survive.

Yes, the Warner cartoons had a zany comedy sense that no other studio came close to.

Daffy Duck was always my favorite character because of his pluck. No matter how many times he was thwarted in whatever it was he wanted to do, he kept trying. And DUCK AMUCK is my all-time favorite cartoon.

Of the Disney characters, I liked Donald the best with his fiery temper and garbled diction.

HEROES is seemingly giving us the pieces of the puzzle much faster than LOST is, but that doesn't make me think LOST is the lesser show. They each have their own styles of storytelling, and I'm willing to be patient.

I am trusting LOST's producers to finally provide us with answers once they see that the show is in its final season. And I have no reason to think they'll disappoint loyal viewers once that day comes. In the meantime, they can continue to perplex and puzzle me all they want as long as they don't bore me, and I haven't ever found it boring.

Back to the cartoons a second. I don't care for Tom and Jerry either, but they are the most Oscared cartoon characters in the Academy's history. Most of the other famous characters (Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, Speedy Gonzales, Tweety, Pepe LePew) won one for a film of theirs (Mr. Magoo won twice) but not the succession of awards that Tom and Jerry collected.

I second that one!

I love the old Merrie Melodies, particularly the ones that spoofed the 1930s muscials or that would feature songs from those musicals.

The Bashful Buzzard (1945)
Quote
Beaky Buzzard is sent out by his Italian-voiced Mamma to bring home something to eat. While his brothers fetch a milk cow (with farmer attached), a string of circus elephants (including a baby one brandishing a banner reading "I am NOT Dumbo") and a dog attached to a fire hydrant, Beaky manages to capture a baby bumble bee.

Memorable Quotes from
The Bashful Buzzard (1945)
[as his siblings return to the nest carrying large, dangerous game animals, Beaky laconically flaps back with his claw wrapped around a barely visible insect]
Beaky Buzzard: [singing cheerfully] I'm bringin' home a baby bumblebee!

Oh God DR Pogue.....you just named the 2 cartoons that seem to be burned deep into DP Kerry's brain from when he was a young tot.  Somewhere (at one time) we had both of them dubbed off on videotape.   That "Fedora" tune can really burn a hole in your brain!!

I Love to Singa (1936)
Quote
"I Love to Sing-a"
Music by Harold Arlen
Lyrics by E.Y. Harburg
Sung by Owl Jolson
Voiced by Tommy Bond-the "Butch" from Our Gang comedies

All the lyrics from Looney Lyrics

Quote
I LOVE TO SINGA
(Avery-1936)
I love to sing-a
About the moon-a and the June-a and the Spring-a.
I love to sing-a
About a sky of blue-a or a tea for two-a,
Anything-a with a swing-a to an I love you-a.
I love-a to, I love-a to sing!

I was born ??? -oola.*
La-di-do. Major Bowe's gonna get me.
Got through Yale with boola-boola.
La-di-do. Oh, microphone's got me.

I love to sing-a.
I like to wake up with the South-a in my mouth-a,
And wave the flag-a,
With a cheer for Uncle Sammy and another for my Mammy.
I love to sing!

Go on and sing-a
About your moon-a and your June-a 'bout-a Spring-a.
Go on and sing-a
About a sky of blue-a or a tea for two-a,
Anything with a swing-a to an I love you-a.
I love-a to, I love-a to sing!

I love to sing-a.
I like to sing-a never stop-a to my poppa,
And wave the flag-a,
With a cheer for Jacky Bunny and another for my Mommy.
We love to sing!

... and the little kitten who sang, "I wear my green fedora for Dora"...a cartoon I've only seen once in my life, I think, but I loved and would love to see again.

Toy Town Hall (1936)
Quote
"I'm Wearin' My Green Fedora"
Written by Joseph Meyer, Al Lewis and Al Sherman

Complete Lyrics from Looney Lyrics

Quote
TOY TOWN HALL
(Freleng/1936)
When someone steals your heart away
Let it be me
But when someone steals your heart away
Let it be me, just me
Merrily we roll along, Rubinoff and me
When he plays his fiddle I just go on a spree
It's a cinch that every time I go on the air
I just look around and find old Rubinoff there
Sweet music makes a rainy day seem clear again
It brings you near again to me
Sweet music makes the same old story new again
By bringing to you again my song
Say, have you ever met the girl who's the talk of the town?
A work of art without a question
Who gives you part of her suggestions
You better write her number down
I'm wearing my green fedora, Fedora
Not Alice, not Annie, not Casey but Fedora
I usually come to town in a battered old hat of brown
But it got red/green when me and my queen go steppin' around
Fedora is the girl I love

TOD;

Yes dear gang, I have to admit that I too am basically a Warner Bros. lover.  I just loved the off-the-wall and skewed look at life that their characters could see.

Take Bugs..... he was both a womanizing Lothario and a flaming nelly -- it just depended on his mood and the situation!  Later on, I liked Rocky & Bullwinkle because I never quite knew what direction the cartoon/story would go in.  And also stuff like "Fractured Fairytales."

I blame it all on Jose !  :)  :)

I like the Fleischer cartoons: Betty Boop, (especially the ones with Cab Calloway!) Popeye, etc. because they were so weird!

The old Warner Brothers cartoons with Bugs can't be beat. I didn't like it when Chuck Jones took over Tom and Jerry et al. The designs were more elegant before he gave them their extreme makeover and made their features cruder...heavy eyebrows, etc.

There's a WB cartoon called "Daffy in Hollywood", where Daffy Duck ends up on a film set. There is a dog with big headphones who is a sound recordist and Daffy has a scene where he's editing and splicing film together with a big paintbrush full of glue. I used screen captures from these two scenes for our wedding invitations since these are our job descriptions. The theme of our wedding was "The Marriage of Sound and Picture". (When you finish a mix and print it with the picture, it's called "marrying".) It took place at the home of my assistant editor, Tom and his gardening partner, David. It was decorated to the hilt and had some suprise guests (lifesized cardboard figures of Marilyn Monroe and others peering out from behind the shrubbery. And a steel drum band for music. (This is what happens when it's your second wedding and you're the one paying for it. Your mother has no control and you do whatever the hell you want!)
