Dear Reader Jay-

And maybe I missed it but how did you come up with the name ROLLER?

The name came with the dog when we adopted him.  He was owned by a breeder who hoped to show him, but the dear pup was just too shy in the ring to ever achieve champion status.  So the breeder retired him from the ring and had no further use for him.  Technically, his full name is High Roller.  And when we bred Roller and took the pick of the litter, we named that puppy Blackjack.  (And I'm not even a heavy gambler.)

For those who missed the info early on, these dogs are purebred cocker spaniels.  They both were black as coal at one time, but each of them has developed some salt in their pepper, Roller more so than Blackjack, Dear Reader Me more so than Roller.   ;)

I do hope everyone understands that our internet access has been severely limited since leaving home Monday.

The highlight of the trip so far was the Christmas Eve Do at the warm, inviting home of the astonishingly lithe Bruce Kimmel.  We were most favorably impressed by his hospitatlity, cordiality, and in-person wit.  We enjoyed meeting some other Kimlets, and daughters thereof.

Today, we're off to Phoenix.  Although I've heard that certain flights bearing a substance known as poutrine have been grounded.  Not sure what to make of that.

Best gift: official Playbill binders for Playbills from DW Joy.  Exactly what my mother had during her one-show-a-week Broadway phase, roughly from 1945 to 1958.  Them were good years!

Arnold: I do believe I saw Swishy Sarah lurking here yesterday but she obviously deigned not to post.  I found that strange, but then I find many things strange and when I do find things strange I laugh and laugh and then I laugh some more.

Once again, I did not really need to be here today.  My editor is still out sick and I'll just be doing busy work for a while.  Tomorrow I'll be getting here at eight-twenty to work until twelve-thirty.  At that time the digital dish people will be coming to my home environment to install the dish.  What I was most impressed with, dish-wise, is that the whole damn thing is free - the dish, the box, the installation.  And the monthly fee isn't much more than what I formerly paid for Adelphia Cable, the world's worst cable service.

The original lyrics written for the movie were never used... Judy refused to sing them.  I don't have them all, but it began

Have yourself a very merrry Christmas.
It may be your last.
Next year we will all be living in the past.

Yes it's very depressing, but also right for character and situation.

CD - WICKED (it comes off better on stage than on CD) and lots of Christmas stuff

DVD - SCROOGE and MRS> SANTA CLAUS

VHS - Still trying to work up the enthusiasm to watch "Angels in America".  I know it is supposed to be so brilliant but it just sounds so stupid!

Happy Boxing Day to those who celebrate it and Happy Kwanza to our African-American DRs.

I also watched the documentary on Treasure of Sierra Madre - I must say I am underwhelmed by most of these.  Part of the problem is they seem to get the same three people to do them all - and let me tell you I just don't need to see either Robert Osborne or Leonard Maltin talk about ANYTHING.  John Milius narrates, and while that might have seemed like a good idea, the fact is he drones, has no life, and it just is somnambulistic.

DR Musicguy -- What year was that picture taken of you and Miss Gish?  You look like they should have carded you before they allowed you in a place that served alcohol.

Well I thought too much of THAT tree would be....too much!

DR SWW I have that Vertigo book, and it is indeed very interesting.

MR BK, I think you will like satellite dish television.  We enjoy ours very much....but there are so many choices, it cuts into DVD time!

Roller will soon be home.  Holly the zaftig Shar-pei approves!

I read an interesting thing today that I didn't realize but it makes perfect sense.  Turner owned all the pre-1948 Warner Bros films because they sold them to someone (MCA?...no that was Paramount)....anyway...since all the mergers Time Warner CNN etc., WB now has their library back!

Strange things.....

Yes, DR JRand, it was I who posted the Judy Harriet picture. She was definitely one of the second tier Mousekateers, but I do remember her.

DR Panni, does your DVD player do this with all DVDs. Sounds like the player thinks it's playing a copy of a DVD rather than the real thing OR the player thinks you're trying to make a tape of the DVD and is kicking in the copy protection. Make sure you don't have anything plugged into the player to make the player think you're doing any copying.

Happy to hear about Roller. A nice Christmas present to have him back.

I'll never forget Lillian Gish on a talk show, maybe Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin, and Richard Shickell (I know that's not the right spelling; too lazy to look it up) was also there as a guest, and she told him off good and proper about the negative review he had given her and her show ANYA many years before. It was very clear that ANYA meant a great deal to her and that she had nursed this grudge against him for quite a long time.

Must stop eating cookies!... Must stop eating cookies!...

 :-X

Well, I headed downstairs and had a late brunch of eggs and bacon... and cookies - chocolate chippers.  I went through the newspaper, and all the sale flyers... Clipped a few Extra Discount Coupons - of course, the coupons aren't valid on most of the stuff I/you want to buy, but one can hope.

Must stop eating cookies!... Must stop eating cookies!...

I'm gonna go ahead and get ready to head to the theatre for tonight's show... and make a stop at Pentagon City Fashion Center (aka "mall") on the way in.  ;-)  We'll see...

Must stop eating cookies!... Must stop eating cookies!...

Anybody need anything from Macy's?  Or Best Buy?  Or Nordstrom?  Williams-Sonoma?  Sur La Table? ;-)

Must stop eating cookies!... Must stop eating cookies!...

I had a delightful time catching up on the posts.  Now I must go back to work disinfecting my house.  My son left with his flu germs and we have company arriving Monday.  We simply can’t afford to be sick, nor do I want to pass it along to them.

Aside from the fact our son was sick Christmas was great.

Jay, I’ll be watching for updates on Roller.

LOL, Jose...I can use the same chant only replacing the word "cookies" with "chocolate."

I saw Peter Pan yesterday, and BK, your friend did a faboo job coaching the children.  They were all wonderful, but I was most impressed by the girl who played Wendy...just a natural screen presence, and a marvelous little actress.

Charles--How cool about the friendship with Jason Isaacs.  He is just so wonderful at playing preening villains...his Hook was over-the-top and sublime, every bit as good I thought as Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow.  I want to see "Dragonheart" btw!

DVD--Sweeney Todd in Concert
CDs--Merrily We Roll Along OCR, Pacific Overtures OCR, Parade OCR, Wicked OCR
Cassettes--She Loves Me OCR, Do I Hear a Waltz? OCR

I think I shall go out and spend more Xmas money!

Jane, glad to see you back! Was it really snowing down there? The hail camed down but good up here yesterday causing 20 cars to collide near the Market Street exit on I-5! Glad I missed that and thankfully no one was hurt badly.

MBarnum yes it really snowed, just a very pretty light snowfall.  All that was left this morning was a light layer of ice, which I believe is now melted.

I am also having trouble, an understatement, leaving the left over junk food alone.  My method is too put it down the garbage disposal.  This must be done very quickly so it actually goes into the garbage and not into me.  I really did that with some of my leftover candy.  The rest I tucked away in a drawer.

I’m still working on the great Australian novel.  I read it on the plane to Los Angeles and back.  In-between my brother had some light detective novels for me to read.  I have barely had time to read since I returned, just at night before I fall asleep.  I am enjoying it very much and finding it very interesting.  I am really curious now about your childhood and how it was like this book.

Not really like my family life Jane. The descriptions of Perth in the 1950's and the "Laconic lifestyle" of a trouble free, sunny childhood are so evocative of a peaceful time when Australia was in splendid isolation. Our current leader (John, in Bush's pocket, Howard) wants Australia to be back there again - not all the values were good and we can not go back. It was a time when we wanted Australia white and ignored the existence of the indigenous people - Howard would like that. Tim Winton's use of the landscape itself and his use of Aborignal "dreamtime"  influences is wonderful.  The "Water" that is so important to the novel (and significant in his other works too) is interesting. Probably 90% of Australians live on the coast. Our childhoods are spent in the sea. It is the freedom that is given by the water and the dangers hidden in the water that influence so much that is Australian. The "rebirth" of "Fish" is symbolic of so much and once again, the near death experience is revisited by characters in his other novels.
Mr Winton writes what he feels ansd claims that he writes a novel for no other purpose than to "Write". His symbolic images are often only descriptions of reality and not meant to signify any deep inner turmoils etc. In interviews he seems to be thoroughly down to earth and lacks any pretension. He hates all that "promote the book" public appearances "performing" that is necessary these days if you want o make a living from writing. I think now I should have emailed this to you. Maybe other readers will want to read "Cloud Street".

Tomovoz, I realized this was a book that needed more attention than I had to give at the moment, plus I was missing much of the Australian innuendoes.  Thank you for the in-depth explanation.  I thought there must be more significance regarding the water than I perceived and was wondering where the “dreamtime” influences came from.  Since I’m finding the book a bit depressing I’m pleased the book doesn’t represent your family life.

Now will you please explain your name change?

"Shallows" would give you a taste of the writer Arnold. "Cloud Street" next. Then his earlier works and "The Riders". His latest book is beautifully written ("Dirt Music") but does not satisfy.
