As for the Topic of the Day... I might have seen 10 movies in theatres this year... I think... And I liked most of them, so... Let's see what I can come up with, remember...

(in no particular order)

-"The History Boys" - Ah!... Dominic Cooper and Jamie Parker in a towel - alas, not the same towel, but still.. I like that bit of "expansion" from the stage play/version. Yes, the movie may have been a bit stage-bound, but I thought it worked for what it was.
-"Running With Scissors" - Well, I liked this one, but didn't love it. I wish more of the humor had been retained from the book.
-"The Devil Wears Prada" - I loved playing "Name that NYC locale" while watching this movie.
-"The Departed" - I went in not expecting to like this one at all, but, Wow!, What a ride!
-"Little Miss Sunshine" - A very sweet movie with some great ensemble work.
-"Strangers With Candy" - So wrong on so many levels... But in a good-wrong way.

-"Sunset Boulevard" - Yes, I know this movie did not come out originally in 2006, but I saw it this year for the first time on the big screen. It really was a treat seeing this on the silver screen.

And that's about all I can remember for now...

Most of the films der Brucer and I saw in theaters this year were films we took the grandlads to see, and therefor were animated stuff.

Over the Hedge was good. Ice Age 2: Meltdown was terrible. I'm having trouble remembering what else we took them to see. Taking them to bookstores is more fun.

The Illusionist and The Prestige were both interesting, but far too contrived for their own good.

Superman Returns and X-Men: The Last Stand were both disappointments.

I enjoyed Casino Royale a lot.

I'm trying to think of what else we saw in the theaters this year. That might be the full list.

So... Just a few catching up questions...

Did anyone else get the Special Edition of the Dreamgirls OCR? The two disc version with a couple of previously unreleased tracks - including "It Ain't Over"(!!!) - and the karaoke tracks on the second disc along with a not-so-good dance mix of "And I Am Telling You...".

I only ask since I haven't seen that many copies in the stores, and it's no longer listed on Amazon - which is where I got it from. I wonder if the release of the film soundtrack bumped it from the inventory.

When seeing DREAMGIRLS (or any other recent movie) did anybody else see a preview for a new Eddie Murphy comedy (where he plays this really fat woman, among other characters). OMG, i cannot remember ever hearing an audience howling with laughter like that for a preview.

DR George - I'm lovin' that Borders Rewards program. Those weekly coupons sure do come in handy. And then if you happen to be able to use different coupons at the same time for different items (one for a book, one for a CD, one for a DVD), and then couple that with a personal shopping day for an extra 10% off... That's some "Reward". *That 40% off DVD Boxed Sets coupon last week came in handy for last-minute Christmas shopping.

I think most of you know that a top ten (other than worst) would be practically impossible for me. I sort of enjoyed Little Miss Sunshine and The Devil Wears Prada, which is high praise from me these days. I loathed Superman Returns, The DaVinci Code, Scoop, Lady In The Water, Mission Impossible III, and The Black Dahlia.

I got the Dreamgirls 2 CD set - it's nice, and it's nice to have the unreleased tracks. I wish it were a more theatrical-sounding cast album - it was produced as if it were a pop album, which was a mistake, I think. I like it much better than the soundtrack, though.

The memo officially went out from the higher-ups at my tax office: Tax season is starting the day after New Year's Day. I hope there are no morale problems as a result. On the other hand, they pay for overtime, so some people will appreciate the extra cash.

Jose - Tax season has normally started third week in January, with Saturdays not necessarily starting some years until the last saturday in January. it's a lovely firm, I don't know why we're so understaffed; they must be doing something "wrong" on the recruitment side.

I simply refused to watch MI:III. I can no longer watch a film with Tom Cruise in it and be able to separate his off-screen persona with what happens on-screen. As an actor, he has now jumped the shark. A pity, because he's done good work in the past.

I think artists should be judged on their best work (if they have any) - everyone has off days, even geniuses. Not all Preston Sturges films equal his best, nor Billy Wilder or Hitch, or Ford, nor Cary Grant, nor De Niro, nor Brando, and on and on.

Hmm... Continuing the high concept... GROGGY BOTTOM - That would be a great name for a coffee shop/breakfast place around George Washington University.

*Which reminds me of a pair of establishments that used to be in Norfolk - at least I don't think they're in existence any more... You could start (and end) your evening at "The Emergency Room"... And then once they closed up shop in the wee hours, you could toddle/stumble across the street to their sister establishment for some breakfast and strong, black coffee... "The Recovery Room".
