I don't have any favorite magicians...well, maybe Jacques Bergerac.

Compared to Criss Angel, all the other "magicians" seem hokey to me.

The balcony of my apartment overlooks the Commencement Bay portion of Puget Sound.  Usually, the water is a brilliant blue.  This morning, it is a dark gray, almost black.

Has anyone been having trouble accessing Deep Discount DVD's website? I know I have a slow dial-up connection, but it will only load about half of the necessary information and then seems to stall.

Thank-you, DR Matt, for reminding me about tonight's televiewing schedule.  I'll make sure der Brucer records Ugly Betty, at the least, since he won't have made his way home from grandladding by that time.

Der Brucer's daughter is, of course, Magic Mommy, who entertains birthday party guests with store-bought magic tricks while screaming angrily at all the kids to sit down.

DRs Jose and DearReaderLaura, thanks for filling in for me last night on keeping DR MBarnum in check.  That posting was begging for critical commentary.

I'm still trying to figure out who it is who is going to show him a few things....the bodybuilder or the grandfather who played with Steve Reeves in a mariachi band in the 1940s and 50s.  Logic tells me one thing, but Mike's interest in Reeves leads me down another path.

Why they make fun of Polish engineers:

But I love it! In the world of "storybook" houses, surely there's a name for the ones, like this, that are quite deliberately quirky. DERBRUCER, you HHW researcher-in-chief, do you know one?

BTW, there's an interesting storybook house in LA--Culver City, to be exact--right near MGM. Anyone know the one I'm thinking about? Just off Venice Blvd.

After being perplexed, it dawned on me.  You are referring to his "role" as the Great Desmond in "The Hypnotic Eye", I think.

Or?

I do...isn't it the Witch's House -- a house that looks like it leapt off the pages of a Grimm's fairy tale?

A Polish immigrant went to the DMV to apply for a driver's license. First, of course, he had to take an eye sight test. The optician showed him a card with the letters:
'C Z W I X N O S T A C Z.'
"Can you read this?" the optician asked.
"Read it?" the guy replied, "I know the guy!"

Elmore, that is one of my favorite Polish jokes. I never tire of hearing it. (Well, not too often...)

Yes! I've always loved these quirky houses--and the owners who aren't too stuffy to have fun with them.

Here is an interesting article about some of my state's more broadminded citizens.

The headline reads:
Board tells schools to balance Gore’s film

Wonderful.  And JOY!  They've used John Stossel as an example of someone who, it turns out, has NO EDUCATED OPINION, but as a JOURNALIST, points out that some scientists scoff at apocalyptic (NOT global warming, necessarily) predictions.

John Stossel.   Imagine it.  Wrap the grey cells around it and just TRY to get a synaptic response that doesn't defy logic.

Why...why that's like citing Geraldo Rivera as a credible source on ego moderation....or sexual abstinence....or respectable ethics in journalism.

Matt H &  DRLaura thank you.

Cillaliz-I would say you were a bit distracted, glad the computer was an easy fix.  Cute “world” story.

Edisauris-Last I checked Istanbul was still on the government warning list.  My brother also passed up an opportunity to go there last year.  Flying from Bucharest on a cheap flight made it easier, not such a big loss if you had to cancel at the last minute.

The school board's stance sounds reasonable to me.  Opposing viewpoints should be offered, if only to expose the students to the practice of critical thinking.  The news article doesn't suggest that the school board doesn't want the film shown at all, end of discussion - just that two sides of the issue should be given.
