Another TOD:  One of my aunts was always bemoaning how this or that was "going to hell in a hand basket."  This is a pretty common phrase, but I never understood what it meant.

I've always taken it to mean you're going straight to hell, but you're going to be fancied up a bit...presented in some linen-stuffed basked with a selection of cheeses or crackers.

Not an old saying, exactly, but I found a handmade bracelet in the hallway of our apartment building this weekend. It is the kind of bracelet where some of the beads are white with little black letters on them.

The letters spelled out the words: "RELAX BITCH"

I can't tell you how much this mantra helped me through that nervewracking football game yesterday!

One saying I've heard all my life has variations:

"Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."

"You'd throw the baby out with the bath water."

"Well, that's throwing the baby out with the bath water."

I've always visualized a screaming tot, soaking wet, flying out a window.

"Spare the rod and spoil the child" seems to have taken a wrong turn over the past few decades.

It was originally an admonishment to those who spoiled their kids, implying that a spanking/beating was good for all kids.

Now...it's taken at face value as something to do...spare that rod and allow the kids to spoil.

They surely have done a lot of spoiling, IMO.

"Don't buy a pig in a poke"!

That's really good advice, dontchathink?

Along with, "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear."

Or, variations on "Casting pearls before swine."

Enjoyed four shows this afternoon after I returned from lunch. I gan with CROSSING JORDAN, the least of the four shows I watched. Not a great episode last night as Jordan et al went on the hunt for a pedophile. They knew he was guilty and spent the hour trying to get enough evidence to get a search warrant for his home. Rather anticlimactic when all was said and done.

Internal investigations also occupied part of the hour along with some surprising news for Lily.

Next came the always hilarious EXTRAS, this week with David Bowie as guest star. Poor Andy really got his head handed to him while sitting in the VIP section of a club.

And the encounter with the homeless man was simply priceless.

ROME had a good episode showing the increasing rivalry between Octavius and Antony, and, of course, the rising out of the ashes of Vorenus with Pullo by his side. Love this show. Sorry this season is the end of the line.

NO MORE CHEAP PORN!

NY TIMES

Quote
In Raw World of Sex Movies, High Definition Could Be a View Too Real

By MATT RICHTEL
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 21 — The XXX industry has gotten too graphic, even for its own tastes.
Pornography has long helped drive the adoption of new technology, from the printing press to the videocassette. Now pornographic movie studios are staying ahead of the curve by releasing high-definition DVDs.

They have discovered that the technology is sometimes not so sexy. The high-definition format is accentuating imperfections in the actors — from a little extra cellulite on a leg to wrinkles around the eyes.

Hollywood is dealing with similar problems, but they are more pronounced for pornographers, who rely on close-ups and who, because of their quick adoption of the new format, are facing the issue more immediately than mainstream entertainment companies.

The pornographers’ progress with HD may also be somewhat slowed by Sony, one of the main backers of the Blu-ray high-definition disc format. Sony said last week that, in keeping with a longstanding policy, it would not mass-produce pornographic videos on behalf of the movie makers.

The decision has forced pornographers to use the competing HD-DVD format or, in some cases, to find companies other than Sony that can manufacture copies of Blu-ray movies.

One major company, Digital Playground, plans to release its first four HD-DVD titles this month, and plans four new ones each month. In March, Vivid plans to release “Debbie Does Dallas ... Again,” its first feature for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

“Debbie Does Dallas ... Again,” - well, can "Song of the South" be not far behind!

Juliana Ashley Hansen - temp worker.  How bankrupt do these shows have to be before people catch on.  Temp worker?  Miss Hansen has never worked a job in her life, and she's been working on Equity shows for the last three years straight.  So, it simply doesn't matter that there is no "reality" in reality TV, right?  Producers can just manufacture the drama, lie, and everyone sits mesmerized.  Different strokes for different folks.

And I ended the afternoon with last Thursday's 30 ROCK, a funny half hour with Tina Fey dating a gorgeous guy she dubbed "the hair." (It was actually Mariska Hargitay's real-life husband, Peter Hermann). Nice surprise ending on this. Tracy Morgan had another unfunny episode, but I loved the page and Alec Baldwin spending time together. Very funny and very revealing.

Thankfully, I'm watching the GREASE show for the talent involved, and when we get to the live shows next week, I'm hoping to hear some show tunes being sung with no fear of the judges saying, "Too Broadway."

Topic of the Day:  "Waste not, want not."

What the hell does that mean?  I just don't get it! :-\

It's embroidered on the other side of your "A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned" pillow - both exhortations for good stewardship.

"Waste Not" often results in "Waist Growth" which we "Want Not"

I have an embroidered pillow my mother gave me after I told her I was going to marry my DH. It says "Eat, Drink and Remarry!"

Feel better vibes to Michael S...DH Greg and I both had that over the holidays but it only lasted 48 hours for him, 24 for me. Hope it disappears quickly for you, too!

BTW, whenever I see your name it reminds me of a Shasta Root Beer commercial with some Andrews Sisters-type group singing "Root beer Mr. Shane" to the tune of "Bei Mir Bist du Schoen."

Hi dear Esteemed and "too much tsimis" laden BK --

I had exactly this same thought last night as i watched part of the Grease thing.  I hadn't seen it before, but all of a sudden they were doing little vignettes about the various persons, and here is "Miss Julianna Hansen."  And I'm thinking, "now wait a minute..... touring in a full-sized road company of T.M.M. isn't exactly chopped liver!"  And then later, I laughted out loud at the "office temp" label under her picture.

I don't mean to fault Julianna at all....she's a very talented girl.  But as you said.....amateurs striving to get a "first break??"  Give me strength.

And that is exactly why I think so-called "reality TV" sucks.  It is all manipulated, cut, fakely-acted, re-pieced together, etc.

Ah haz spoken !

We discovered last night that 2 different people have posted our entire "Internationale" film on YouTube. They each did this independently because the reel breaks are in different places. (And of course not anywhere logical!)

I am really P.O.'ed because we struggled for several years to make this and have never made a dime in profit from it. And the comments are congratulating one of the posters, "anticonsumer" for another great film.  I think "anticonsumer" should be renamed "antifilmmaker". Over 400 people have watched the whole film, and I would imagine a few of them might actually have bought the DVD.

I can't even post a comment even though I'm registered...YouTube must KNOW I want to complain. Argh.

The NFC Championship game (or was it the AFC; I can never keep them straight) last night by far had the highest ratings of the night while all other shows like DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and EXTREME MAKEOVER took hits in the ratings.

GREASE was not only NBC's highest rated show of the evening, it didn't lose any audience numbers from the previous week.
