We are working on restoring a theatre on our town Square. This talk of political correctness brought to mind a question we have been debating.

The theatre has a "colored" entrance that led to the balcony. (Stairs too narrow to roll down...) Some would like to keep that as part of the historical context of the theatre, others would rather whitewash the past and pretend it never happened. I would be interested in what some of our DR's think.

As someone who LOVES historical buildings--most old buildings, in fact--I would want the "colored" sign kept. Not only is it original, but it's a poignant reminder of a part of American history that we should not forget.

B.D. Wong is on TV right now.  Maybe he'll manage to work in a plug for Herringbone on the Law and Order:SVU episode.

DR Edi - about the "Colored Entrance" is it a sign or painted on the wall?  I am totally into history too and think it would be interesting to leave it, but if it's a sign it could be removed and perhaps put in a display case with other items from the old days to allow people to see the historical perspective.

Or, you could leave it where it is and put up some sort of plaque or description next to it, explaining the historical significance for those too young to remember

Alas, it's too late for the caffeine in Cherry Coke. But I have what's left in the can I was drinking earlier. I am looking at it wistfully.

DR Edi - here's a link to the history of the restoration of our Orpheum Theater. It was a $12 million project that was completed in 2001  http://www.orpheumlive.com/history/index.php

Skip brought back a luscious fruit tart from his Fine Cooking 2 cooking class today.  Also three different kinds of chicken, and a great blue cheese salad.

I like driving. And i am quite good at parallel parking. But i had to do something today that i cannot remember the last time i had to do. I had to parallel park on the left side of a one way street (with parking on both the left and right side of the road).

As i was doing it i realized that i always parallel park on the right side of the road. And it was actually sort of tricky to do it on the left side. Plus there was not too much room to squeez into the spot. But i did it (2 tries).

I still remember the parking test on my driving test. It almost made me fail. Because on the first try i hit the curb. And we were not allowed to hit the curb. But i asked if could try again and got it on the 2nd shot. And he passed me.

Thanks so much, Cillaliz!

I am collecting notes about successful and unsuccessful restoration efforts, mainly regarding the programming of such theatres.

Thanks for all the feedback about the entrance. I think they shouldn't whitewash our history, so to speak, but give it some context. I will do some research and see if there is a tasteful way to handle it. The "colored only" sign has been gone for a long time, but the entrance remains.

Hi DR Edi....   Some years back, I played down at the Rylander Theatre in (I think) Americus, GA.   It has had a nice restoration, and has an organ re-installed back into it.

We have been very fortunate to have a 1927 15-rank Robert Morgan Theatre Pipe Organ donated to the Strand by the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society. I don't know if there was ever an organ installed in this theatre (it was built in 1935) but we're certainly lucky to get this one.

The Rylander is one of the theatres that is always mentioned as a success story. We plan to make a field trip down there to check it out. If we do get our theatre going maybe we can bring you in as a guest performer!
