I find A&E's "City Confidential" extremely fascinating.

Many terrific tales of murder, mayhem, greed and gore.

I started a new workout/weigh lifting regime designed by a friend and co-worker. I may be pushing myself a bit too hard as I have found it difficult to lift my arms for the past four days.

I hope you're giving your muscles 24 hours to recuperate.

Also...you need to get some electrolytes into your system.  Try Gator-Aid or some other drink designed to feed your muscles after they've been worked hard.

That, or don't lift your arms.  Get someone to "do" for you, "die" for you, "lift" you, "carry" you.....

I have two shelves of books...one on the Jack the Ripper murders and one on who killed the Princes in the Tower (I don't think Richard III did it).  I like these two famous crimes because they are still essentially unsolved.

I find nothing fascinating about the O.J. Simpson murders because it was pretty obvious before the trial even started who did.  It was a rather clumsy crime and the evidence to any objective, rational human being was overwhelming and obvious.
It is one of the great miscarriages of justice of all time.  The killer's incompetence is matched only by the jury and the judge's.  Though the defense made some mistakes, the evidence they presented was still overwhelming...the DNA blood evidence alone.  Anyone who bought into Johnny Cochran's nonsense, "If the Glove doesn't fit, you must acquit."  Maybe the reason the killer lost the glove in the first place was, it didn't fit.

Welcome back, TPunk.

Did you and Rodzinski go to the FOLLIES dress rehearsal last night?  (Why do I have in my head that you might have gone?)

Taking a costume break -- ran out of velcro (a costumer's best friend when doing children's theatre!) -- so taking a quick break before heading out for more supplies.  Plus, DR Cason called and took me out of the creative moment.

It is one of the great miscarriages of justice of all time.  The killer's incompetence is matched only by the jury and the judge's.  Though the defense made some mistakes, the evidence they presented was still overwhelming...the DNA blood evidence alone.

What may be "obvious" through your eyes probably looked a lot different through the eyes of an inner-city jurist accustomed to police chicanery. Forman lying under oath and Van Atter taking blood evidence home over-night would lead to reasonable doubt in any juror's mind that was predispositioned to doubt the integrity of the authorities.

Once the case went to the jury, an acquittal based on "reasonabel doubt" was a better than even chance.

Two lessons from OJ:

When accused, get the best defense money can buy.

When you clearly have a high profile case in hand, the authorities need to assign a few folks whose full attention is focused on doing things "right" and by the numbers. The LA Police procedures were adequate, they just were'nt followed!

TOD:  I have two cases that still fascinate me: Lizzie Borden and Jack the Ripper.

And one for Minette - a very popular mystery author here at my library!

Good to hear! I know that Elizabeth George is well-known in the US, but then again, she's American. I didn't know how broad Minette's following was. She certainly deserves it.

Good morning to dear Esteemed, mellow, bouncing, puzzled, and studly BK --

(who, by the way, looked absolutely dashing sitting in Ruth's Chris Steak House wearing only a skorpido.... whereas I had a thong and a boa!)

Well, that must have been quite a sight! Do you have pictures?

You get four from which to pick: The Freeway Killer, the Trash Bag Murderer,  Randy Kraft or the Hillside Stranglers:
Don't you miss LA?

der Brucer

I recall the Hillside Strangler, though not the details. But, as you say, there were others during that period, as well.

As for missing LA, aside from those periods in the 1970's, I think I felt safer there than I do here. My Virginia neighborhood is pretty quiet--reiterated by the cops I've spoken to--but we had a murder just a couple weeks ago--too close by for comfort. There are many neighborhoods in LA where I could live and feel safe and comfortable. Here, I am much pickier about the neighborhood. These could be misperceptions on my part, but overall I feel more comfortable in LA--perhaps just because I know the area better.

Like I said, I am so interested in knowing what is the matter with these folks?  I really want to know the why (well, they're crazy -- that's the given)  but I'm interested in knowing what's the defect in their minds and hearts -- born bad, something happened in their life, or the combo...

A very good discussion point.

Many of us believe we can look into the eyes of some adults and see "Evil".

Some of us have seen youngsters we just sense are intrinsically "bad people".

When the elementary school playground bully enjoys torturing animals, we all sense (unavoidable?) trouble ahead.

Religious believers can fall back on the incarnation of Good and Evil.

Secularists often resort to "Bad Seed" theory.

Either way, the manifestation of evil in society is something we do not seem to adequately address.

I wish I had some constructive answers.
