Basically, Actor's Equity requires that the producer's of Broadway shows and touring productions have a set of auditions every six months, a "required six-month open call". These are held regardless or not there are any openings in the cast. They insure that the producers see more than just the people they "want to see" at "invited calls".

Since the upcoming revival of Grease started casting back in September, they were required to have a six-month call now.

Conversely, even when a show has announced a closing date, they are still required to have a "six-month call" - even if the show is closing two weeks later. -Although, sometimes, those can be waived.

And sometimes a show will announce a closing date just days after a required call.

I have been reading the postings about South Pacific on the Film Score Monthly chat and the Home Theater Form. I know some of our posters post there (I don't have issues with them), but I do have issues with most of them. They bitched for years wanting the roadshow version of South Pacific knowing that the restoration wouldn't be perfect because the negative was lost. Now that it has been released all they seem to do is bitch and find something to nit pick about.
I am not a maven when it comes to the technical aspects of releases, but the sound and picture quality on "Regular release" portion are in my opinion are wonderful. The restored roadshow is faded but is worth having and does for the most part add a lot to release. I am happy with the release.
What could they have done to make everyone happy?

What's really sort of sad is that the producer's overhauled the production - cast and concept - right after it's out-of-town tryout. Alas, all for the worse. It wasn't a great work of art before it reached the Great White Way, but it wasn't that bad.

So I understand. When Brad Oscar was in the first tour of the country, my friends said the show was pretty good.

One more general comment.

If they can telecine (Right process?) to adjust colors why couldn't use it to work on the faded portions? They have the other footage as reference points

They just cast the show here in Tacoma, and when I saw who one of the actors was going to be; I called the director and asked if I could stage manage the show!

It was quite amazing and puzzling who got jettisoned before the show came into New York. A lot of very talented people lost their jobs. And a bunch of the actors were replaced with actors who were totally different types, physically and vocally.

*I do have to day, that one my guilty pleasures is the concept album with Linda Eder and Colm Wilkinson. "Till You Came Into My Life" is just soooooo over the top. But I like it.

Most definitely. During one of the breaks, we were chatting in the hallway, and these two young actresses were standing near us. She was trying to remember the name of a particular actor, and when she couldn't come up with the name, she just turned to the two girls and asked them, "Do you know the actor....?" They coudn't remember his name either. So, they just started talking about how rehearsals were going, what they were doing, etc. Very classy.

They could have. Why they didn't, I have no idea - it's a simple thing to do - we did it on Nudie and it worked very well. The beginning and end of every reel was from a completely faded print - you wouldn't know it. Or, maybe they wanted the new footage to be obvious - and maybe they thought if they did color correct that the footage, since from a positive print rather than the neg like the rest of the transfer, would have looked more odd - I don't know.

I started my evening watching THE MILKY WAY, the earlier Harold Lloyd version of the film that became THE KID FROM BROOKLYN with Danny Kaye in the Lloyd role. I was so much more familiar with the Kaye version, but I think it's funnier with Lloyd. The two films are very, very alike.

Next, I watched YOU'RE TELLING ME, the first film in the new W.C. Fields DVD boxed set. I had never seen this before, and it was just terrific with many laughs, especially that ten minute stretch on the first tee at the golf course which is fall down funny with Fields milking every gag and building, building, building so that one gag tops another. Just a scream.

Interesting that Kathleen Howard, who played the snooty mother of Buster Crabbe in this movie, ended up playing his wife in a later film of his made the same year - the classic IT'S A GIFT.

And, BTW, Buster Crabbe is TO DIE FOR in this movie! A gorgeous, gorgeous man.

Then came AMERICAN IDOL. Jose has already given us a blow by blow description of each act, so I'll just make a few random comments.

Best vocal of the night - Jordin Sparks on "I Who Have Nothing."

Other outstanding performances: Melinda Doolittle, Blake Lewis, Chris Richardson, Chris Sligh, Haley Scarnado, Phil Stacey.

Off the mark tonight: Stephanie Edwards and Gina Glockson. They may be in trouble.

And, of course, in the six year history of IDOL, I think the worst performance ever was given tonight: Sanjaya Malakar. That the judges congratulated him for doing something different was a DISGRACE!

It was shrieked with never a note on pitch, desperate, and he was so out of breath at the ends of phrases that there were no notes (or words) there. Atrocious doesn't begin to describe its excruciating foulness.
