LoveMusik

First the downbeat comments.

It's too long (3 hours with 15 minute intermission), it ends abruptly and oddly and I think you need to be a fan of Kurt Weill (I am) to really like the show.

That being said, I think it's got some very good things going. Boy, Donna Murphy may have a reputation (due to missed performances in Wonderful Town) but when she's good, wow! I love her. She was great as Phyliss in Follies and she is great as Lotte Lenya. Michael Cerveris is wonderful as Kurt Weill. David Pittu makes Brecht a slimy, mean son-of-a-bitch but does an excellent job. For a left-leaning Marxist he was a real creep to the "lower classes" (at least in this portrayal).

The show is episodic and not necessarily chronological. Some of the music used in the first act, which takes place in Europe comes from shows he wrote in the late 30s and 40s when he was in New York and California. It still works for me. There are some lovely and tender moments between Murphy and Cerveris and both (with their slight German accents) sing beautifully.

I knew basics about both Weill and Lenya but I didn't know specifics (Larry, I'm sure you have much more knowledge about them). Even though they were "together" for many years, they had a very difficult relationship. I didn't know that.

I can see how many people will not like the show. A woman left after the first act (90 minutes) making her dislike known to all around her. She was there with friends. They had driven in from LI and she was getting an early train back. I think I was willing to go with it because I was so taken with the performances of Cerveris and Murphy. This was the first performance so things may be cut. I don't know how much work they plan on doing during previews but it certainly can be trimmed. As I mentioned, the end doesn't really work. I'm not sure how to make it work without adding more time to an already too long piece but something should be done to give the audience more of a feeling of completion.

This is getting long so I'm going to post before I lose it or it turns into a novella.

Later, gaters.

DR Ginny:  Did you say that DH Richard's surgery would be outpatient?

***continued healing vibes!***

Yes, DR singdaw, there's an outpatient surgery center not far from our house.  Thanks, again, for the vibes.

More vibes on this Friday the 13th to DH of DR GINNY - RICHARD.

Thanks, DR JRand.  Richard reminds all of us that he turned 13 on a Friday the 13th, so he's not superstitious about the day.

I'm listening to Carly Simon right now. She's the substitute host for Elaine Paige on BBC Radio 2 this week.

I'm heading out to Long Island after work. We will be there until Sunday. Our return date to the city is predicted to be full of rain, cold and possible SNOW!!! Ugh.

We won't be watching or listening to much of anything this weekend. We will be busy with shopping and visiting. We will be picking up our copy of the final season of Slings and Arrows. Rose has recorded the shows for us and we will watch them in the city.

Speaking of Weill, right now I'm listening to the title song from Lost in the Stars.

And the word of the day is: ENTELECHY!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde,
Their steps becoming the ENTELECHY
Of the band's music.

Thanks, DR George.  That is exactly where my copy says "Second Pressing", so I'm thinking that this new batch of Drowsy LPs is not numbered.
So, what you're basically saying is that this album is repressed.

Not a good thing, considering the show.

Thanks very much for your report, DR Ben.  LOVEMUSIK sounds ambitious and interesting, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Mr. Prince & Company.  Glad you could see it.

I saw a Weill review called "Jam & Spice" at the Westport Country Playhouse last spring.  The concept didn't really work, but oh, such wonderful material!

Hmm, I guess I don't know the specifics of Weill and Cerveris, but the age difference between the two of them would make M. Barnum swoon.

I'm not really sure what I've been listening to or watching lately.  It's a blur.

I'm more than half-way through Julia Child's My Life in France.  Right now, she and husband Paul are in Oslo.  But she's working on "the book" with Simca via correspondence and visits, so I guess living in France can be a philosophical thing.

Der Brucer has been reading the contract between the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and the store where I work.  I couldn't make head nor tails out of it, but it's much more his kind of reading (when he isn't reading mystery novels, of course).

I think that actually Oslo is the farthest north of the cities in France, which makes my family French, instead of Norwegian!  Thank goodness the woman could cook.

I am not illegally posting from work this morning (as some might assume), but I am home sick crippled today.  My back, which has been bothering me all week, finally decided to go out (without me).  At the moment, I am sitting; which is the lesser of all the evils while I wait for the musclerelaxers to kick in, so that I can go back to bed.

Of course, once the musclerelaxers kick in, I will feel so good that I will probably sit here posting the day away.

DR Ben, I would remove the evidence as well (or weill) were it not for the fact that this is the second time in less than a week that I have used the word "swoon."  That for me is some strange kind of record.

For some reason (blame the medication) using the word "swoon" as put me in a mind to sing IT'S DELOVELY.  I am not really sure why, although I suppose someone probably swoons during the course of ANYTHING GOES.

Thanks, Ginny.  I know that I will probably have to endure a third back surgery eventually.  My biggest fear is that by the time they finish working on my back, I will end up being shorter than Tomovoz.  My hip replacements and back surgeries have already cost me three inches of height.  When I was in college, I was 6' 1" tall; now I am barely 5' 10".

Good morning, all!  I thought I was getting sick last night but I feel better today.  I would like to go to the NYPL.

DR Ben, I want very much to see LOVEMUSIK.  I was doing some work on ONE TOUCH OF VENUS for the Kurt Weill Foundation when Lys Symonette and Kim Kowalke were editing the Weill-Lenya letters for publication.  If you're interested, Donald Spoto wrote a bio of Lenya.  I'm still waiting for a good Weill bio.

Yep.  Brecht was a pig, espousing communism in East Berlin and storing all of his wealth in Swiss banks.  From all I've read, he was indeed a pig, taking credit for a lot of the work of his mistress/secretary Elizabeth Hauptmann on THREEPENNY OPERA (the original 1928 production; Brecht kept rewriting it) and HAPPY END.  That said, I think CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE and MOTHER COURAGE are masterpieces.
