Speaking of my mother's trip out here -- I think it was first prompted by an offer of a LA Hainsie/Kimlet Reunion brought up by one MBarnum...is this plan still in effect here?

Already on page two and it's barely 1 am here on the West Coast...I smell another high-posting day!

Seeing how it'll soon be 4 for our East Coasters, I expect them to pick up the baton right away...

Hmmmm...the weather here in LA the next few days is slated to be a little chillier, with the possibility of rain lurking almost all weekend...

I need to go to bed.  I only caught up to the top of page 17 of yesterday's posts, so I'll have to go back to that when I get a chance. ::)

Good night, all!

Joe Meek is indeed a legendary producer of pop records. He was obsessed with Buddy Holly and committed suicide on the anniversary of Holly's death.

BK and Tomovoz, have you ever heard the song "Lucky Star" by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin about Joe Meek? It is beautiful and haunting.

He was a very interesting guy---a great producer but tone-deaf, if you've ever heard him sing. (WFMU has a sample of that in their archives.)

He killed himself on my birthday.

"Joe Meek - The Alchemist Of Pop" is an excellent introduction to his work.

You can find some cuts from Joe Meek: The RGM Legacy / Portrait of a Genius on Irwin Chusid's archived show on WFMU:

http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/16795

Where else on the internet can you get Joe Meek, Eartha Kitt and the cast and chorus of "Love Me Tonight" (not to mention The Mghty Sparrow performing "More Cock"?) I ask you??

Coram Boy

It's quite a spectacle. It's too long, just shy of 3 hours with a 15 minute intermission. It's Dickensian in both scope and subject. It takes place in England in 1742 and 1750 (Acts 1 and 2 respectively) and concerns two boys who meet in a Cathedral choir school and become fast friends. Act 1, perhaps because of the length (90 minutes) is not as powerful as I think they want it to be. It drags and needs trimming (IMHO). Act 2 is more powerful and gives you the emotional charge you were hoping for, although the plot is rather standard issue boys become friends, evil man working for an orphange, dismissive father with reconciliation, etc. I do wish there had been a better resolution of the disgustingly evil orphan seller. I recommend it but I do have to say the buzz about the London production made me think I was getting another Nicholas Nickleby but that's not what happened. It's a good, solid production with an excellent performance by Jan Maxwell in a smaller role but I didn't feel it was the amazing play it's built up to be.

Mr. Moore has arrived so you are in good hands.

I will now retire to the kitchen where I will wash the bowl.

But before I go, Jose, even though it's in my neighborhood, you would know better perhaps. Does the sinfully delicious Little Pie Shop (discussed in depth last night) still have an outlet on 14th Street and 9th Avenue? That Sour Cream Walnut Apple Pie is amazing!!! A slice of that and a cup of coffee while sitting at the counter before going to the theatre is heaven!

And now off to the kitchen.

So... I get into bed around midnight.  I decide to go ahead and sleep sitting up since my acid reflux seems to be kicking into high gear.  Which it did.  With a vengeance.  So, I took a Pepcid AC to help thing out, about an hour later my coughing stopped, and I think I got a few winks.  Then I suddenly woke up again, coughing and with a rather upset stomach, so...

Long story short, I'm up... And I'm just waiting till I'm a bit more awake to head down to the Duane Reade on the corner.

DR JoseSPiano - that's awful.  I know you were coughing a lot the other evening.  That's ALL you need, with tonight's performance approaching.

May Duane provide the antidote to all your symptoms!

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember PLAYING a dance on a wedding reception/dinner cruise in Richmond.  My band was on the second deck with all the kids and teenagers.  All they wanted to do was "The Electric Slide".  So, for 45 minutes straight, that's all we played.  Thankfully, we had a drum machine - those two(!!) chords songs get old fast.  Really fast!
