I saw THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH as a little kid with my parents. A lot of it didn't make sense to me at the time, but I know it scared me because the little boy was in danger.

I'm guessing that was the first James Stewart film I can remember seeing.

This film would be perfect if someone else were doing Kim Novak's role!  The character actors are wonderful and then there's poor Kim: every throwaway line gets emphasis and every important line gets thrown away. I can't believe she's as good as she is in VERTIGO.

For today's viewing, I know I will finish LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.

If THE CLOSER, Season 2  comes in the mail today, I will naturally watch some of those episodes. If it doesn't come, I'll continue with Droopy cartoons and later today or tonight THE BLACK SWAN.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...

And according to weather.com, it's already 81 degrees in Central Park.  And it's supposed to get up to 88 degrees this afternoon.  With partly cloudy skies tonight giving way to a few showers after midnight. ;)

As for the Topic of the Day...

"Rope"
"The Shop Around the Corner"
"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington"

And, I think I've said it before on here, but I've really gotten "It's a Wonderful Life".  Maybe I've just never been in the proper frame of mind to watch it, but I've always found the pacing just a tad too slow and the running time just a tad too long.  Great performances, great story, but still... :-\

And I believe the big decision of the day will be whether to put the A/C window units back in the windows or not.  It has been warmer the past few days, but since we're on the ground floor, our apartment tends to stay on the cool side as it is.  So... We shall see.

Saturday morning greetings!  Had a nice sleep-in until 8:30 and have been to have my hair cut.  We'll be going to our niece's high school graduation later this afternoon.

DR Danise - I was so glad to see in last night's posts that you arrived home safely and not too late.  Hope you have a refreshing weekend.

DR MattH - which Henry VIII book are you reading?  I'm reading Alison Weir's The Six Wives of Henry VIII, in preparation for reading her Life of Elizabeth I, in preparation for watching the HBO series with my book group in July and August.

TOD:

I have so many James Stewart movies yet to see, but of those that I have seen these are my favorites:

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE
HARVEY
MR HOBBS TAKES A VACATION
THE FBI STORY

...but my truly favorite Jimmy Stewart appearences are his guest shots on THE JACK BENNY SHOW...so, so funny.

I have had BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE and NIGHT PASSAGE on dvd for a long, long time but have yet to pop them into the DVD player.

I think BEND OF THE RIVER was likely my first Jimmy Stewart movie...but I was watching it because it co-starred Lori Nelson who was one of my favorite actresses when I was a little kid.

I don't remember my first Jimmy Stewart movie, but I'm a big Jimmy Stewart fan.

Favourites:

OF HUMAN HEARTS
IT"S A WONDERFUL WORLD (Yes, World, not Life w/ Ms. Colbert)
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN
SHOP AROUND THE CORNER
NO TIME FOR COMEDY
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE
HARVEY
THE NAKED SPUR
ANATOMY OF A MURDER
MAN WHO RODE SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE

I'm also a fan of AFTER THE THIN MAN, though it's not really Stewart's picture.

TOD - When I was a junior at the University of Michigan, a tour of Harvey came to town, starring James Stewart, Helen Hayes, Jesse White, etc., and it was a thrill to see them live on stage.

Okay, let me get this straight - nine-thirty in the morning, forty-nine postings, and no one in the jernt.  Oh, dear, oh, dear, there will be a bitch-slapping to be reckoned with if this revoltin' development doesn't change.

You'd think it was a holiday weekend.

Not for Grandparents! I've been off doing some preliminary shopping for the Grand;ads birthday party - this is a bit of a problem because Magic Mommie does not know how many gguests to plan for, does not know when she will know, and wonders why I keep nagging her. The party is one week from today!

Good Afternoon!

Well, I think I'm gonna treat myself to the air-cooled comfort of a couple of movie theatre today.  I've been reading about the new movie "musical", "Once", and, frankly, I'm intrigued.  So that will be first up.  And then probably one of the new French films at Lincoln Square.  We shall see.  Since I'm not escaping somewhere this weekend, I might as well escape to a movie or two.

Laters...

We will go up today and rescue the lads from their parents, and hope the parents can get some work done.

Getting work on on the weekends is a problem because Magic Mommy can get no work done if she has to watch a kid; however, it is too much to ask that she watch both kids, so son-in-law has a bit of a problem getting much done either.

I pick Woody up at 1:30 and off we go for an afternoon of watching Shrek III, going to Border's, watching arcade race-car machines devour quarters (some of these amusements are now $1.00 a turn!) and debating which CDs to play.  (They are adapting to GrandPa's "no Game Boys Allowed on car trips" rule.)

Dinner has not yet been decided.

Power of the internet department:  someone posted to the Guestbook of my website last night, which is nothing that unusual, except this person posted to tell me that my wonderful composition and theory teacher from college, Bruce Reich, had passed away.  I was stunned.  Bruce wasn't much older than I--he was probably still in his late 20s when I was in college (I started, due to testing and college level courses in high school, as a junior at age 17).  He evidently kept his cancer secret, and returned to teach at UCLA for the last year or so before his death.   He was a very funny, unbelievably intelligent guy, to wit:

My first day of classes with him, he came up and quietly said (with a twinkle in his eye), "What's a Jew doing taking music classes at the University of Utah?"  To which I responded without missing a beat, "What's a Jew doing teaching music classes at the University of Utah?"  I later earned his mock enmity after he had spent a semester trying to scare us with how we were going to "define" the Tristan chord once we saw it.  He handed it out the last week of class, and of course I blurted right out with whatever definition it was (I want to say French augmented 6th with some flatted element, but I can't recall right now--Jose? Elmore?).  Bruce just glared at me.  It was hilarious.

BTW, it seems I'm not the only one who was going crazy trying to figure out who the actor on On the Lot was--there was a thread about him on IMDb.  It's Patrick Kerr, who played smitten-with-Roz Noel Shempsky on "Frasier."  I knew I recognized him from somewhere!

A triumvirate of three-initialed people are on right now--TCB, FJL, and JMK.  I believe this makes us pre-qualified to write pretentious Broadway scores.  ;)
