When it was over, I had some time before THE CLOSER started, so I flipped over to TNT on Demand (which is free on my cable service), and watched a five minute interview with Kyra which was very entertaining and informative. It seems to have been filmed for season 2 (clips from season 2 are featured). Anyway, enjoyable.

Also had time to start a 1994 made-for-TV movie I found on Demand: MURDER BETWEEN FRIENDS with Timothy Busfield and Stephen Lang. Only got about 15 minutes in, but it looks OK.

THE CLOSER had a top notch episode.

SPOILER

but I really despaired over the falling out between Brenda and Sergeant Gabriel. I hope their relationship can be repaired because I love them together. Of course, even friends can fight on occasion and so can work partners, so hopefully, when he realizes she was doing her job properly, he can be magnanimous.

I spent the last hour of the evening watching the first 3/4 of SEMPER FI, the docudrama about the gay Marine Jeff Key. Part stage performance and part documentary film, he's not the greatest actor on the planet, but his story did hold my interest.

I'll finish these concluding parts of MURDER BETWEEN FRIENDS and SEMPER FI tomorrow before starting on STAIRCASE and other items on the DVR.

Back from a short and sweet LACC Foundation meeting, so that was good.  I msut finish watching a motion picture on DVD right now, but first, I need some thoughts on the following:

On one of those boards, there is a slight discussion of the song Fifty Percent from Ballroom, which Joan Ryan is doing (her act one closer).   A couple of people hate the song and feels it totally ruins audience identification with the character of Bea Asher.  To which I say, horse pucky - the world is not a simple place and there are all kinds of relationships.  Bea makes a decision to have a relationship with a married man, one who most likely is not happy, but for whatever reason can't leave his marriage.  The song blatantly says that you sometimes don't have a choice who you fall in love with, you just fall (when you fall, you fall) and that, for her, at this time in her life, having fifty percent of her fella is better than having one hundred percent of anybody else.  For me, it's a moving song, a song of almost-defiance, and a positive song for the character.

Joan has fought me on this song since the beginning, because it doesn't relate to her.  She does it wonderfully and I'm pretty positive it will work very well - and we've gone to great lengths in the setup to distance it from her personally - it's in a relationship block of songs (all different kinds - the good, the bad, and the ugly) and she references the movie and the character and how for the character an unconventional relationship obviously works for her.

What think you all?

It is a GREAT song and I "believe" it.  We all make compromises in our lives and relationships. This one works for her. Some people stay in seemingly very bad relationships because it is better to have a relationship than not. This is a mature woman who has experienced life and makes a sensible compromise that works for both parties.

This is exactly how I feel.  One of the yokels on that board goes so far as to say that it killed Ballroom.  And, of course, one cannot present any other point of view to said yokel, because only his view of the world counts and only he can be right.

As someone who accepted fifty percent in a relationship once (and lived to regret it), the song is brilliant in that moment of decision (not knowing what the future will hold). I think she'd be very foolish to abandon it.

Maybe the yokel is identifying too much with the wife?

I had a lucky thing happen today.

Last week, someone put a flyer in our mailbox for a yellow lab/golden retriever that escaped near our house next to the loft. We looked for it during the week but no luck.

Today when I went to the coffee shop, I noticed handwritten "lost dog" signs. No description, and it was about a mile from where the dog escaped. The coffee girl said she'd seen these signs in her neighborhood which actually described the dog as a yellow/golden. I called the folks who put up the posters, and also called the numbers of the flyers and gave each the other's numbers. The guy I talked to sounded like he was going to cry.

This afternoon, a woman called me to say she was going to pick up Layla from the girl who had rescued her. She had escaped while her owner stopped at the office across the street from our house---he was on his way to Oregon to be best man in his brother's wedding, and couldn't stay to find her so the office people said they would take care of things for him. The office lady was very happy because Layla was not from the area and got lost quickly.

Knowing I had a small part in reuniting them gave me a great start to the day.

We wenmt into that taffy shop because (a) it is an adorable shop right along the boardwalk; and (b) their slogan is that their taffy is (I swear I am quoting) "cut to fit the mouth."

Just in case anyone think that me or team Closer is responsible for these ridiculously hypey spots that networks make us do "you won't believe what happens next"...blahblahblah... we are being forced to because they test well. So blame the test audience yokels.

And now I've reache the end of my broadcast day...

We did walk the length of the boardwalk of Atlantic City.  The area where the fire had been was blocked off and there were a couple of local news vans there.

For those who like to play slots but don't really want to gamble, I strongly recommend the "Penny Pavilion" at the stunning Tropicana Atlantic City - the penny section included both penny and nickel games, and is thus a bit misleading, but it was loads of fun.

I think the yokel has his world view and nothing can interfere with it - it doesn't really matter about Bea Asher or her feelings and needs - to this yokel the song is demeaning,  she's a tramp and a lowlife for making her decision and, as he put it, that's all there is to it, period.

Good Evening!

Back from spending a lovely evening with DR MusicGuy.  We ate - Stand (burgers, shoestring fries, onion rings, beer and wine).  We watched musical theatre video clips - Splash (and I guess it really has been a couple of months since I was last there - there were a lot of "new" videos in the rotation).

And then since they're continuing track work on the A and D lines, it took a me a little longer to get back uptown than expected.  However, the wait time was long, but the trip up wasn't too bad since the A was running Express again tonight (when it usually runs Local).

As for "Fifty Percent"... I used to play for one of DC's "Divas" and she would sing "Fifty Percent" whenever she would perform for a Gay/Lesbian event.  It actually works in that context (in regards to gay marriage or the lack thereof).  Consequently, whenever I hear the song now, that's what comes to mind.  In any case...

I do like the song.  A lot.  However, it can come across as sort of a downer.  It is a very dramatic song.  If Joan is still having reservations about it, is there another number you could add to the set to make it more "up"?
