DR Pogue - Ah, the Galt House.  SETCs were held there one year.  I loved the 70's decor in the rooms - and the rooms - at least the one I was in, was quite big too.

And I remember finishing that trip by having brunch in the restaurant on the top floor of the hotel.  Great views of the city and the river.

When I moved into this house I was doing consulting work and often had a break of a couple weeks between assignments. I lucked out and it happened that I had a two-month break between assignments. I used that time to paint the inside of the closets and some new cabinets, then unpack. I unpacked everything I use daily and got set up on the first two floors, then put everything I don't use often on the third floor, still packed. That worked wonderfully--until it came time to set up my office and I had to unpack and organize the third floor. No more extra storage!

TOD:

My first trip to NY was a business trip many years ago. I flew in and was shocked and disturbed at the size of my hotel room. Tiny! And with walls so thin I could hear the TV blaring from both sides (different stations). Ugh! I, of course, had had no experience with NY hotels and this booking was made from a directory. I don't recall if I made it or if a secretary did. I do know I approved it.  I gave a presentation at MetLife the next day, then flew home. No time to see any shows or do much sight-seeing.

And, no, no souvenirs.

Edi, I suspect your remark is in jest, but there's a firm here called Busy Buddies, I believe--two women who help people set up and unpack. There may be a similar organization in Atlanta.

SAFE TRAVEL VIBES, DEAR BK!

It's drizzling here in Pittsburgh, with a 60 % chance of storms now, 40% later.
I'm sitting here like so much fish with a truly serious case of heartburn, well, it's not as bad as it was last night.  Last night I sat up reading, in a sitting position, for most of the night (HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - almost done, now) so I only went into work to set up and let the other Sunday manager work the bar and dining room til 2:30.
I'm gonna try a little light lunch, then finishing watching THE RED SHOES, which I began last night after watching Esther Williams in ON AN ISLAND WITH YOU: an early film study of The Stockholm Syndrome.
Friday night, I had so much fun seeing Pittsburgh CLO's closing production:  THE FULL MONTY.
Now, I had never warmed to the OBC recording, but remain a huge fan of the British film, so my expectations weren't high at all.  Honestly, I only went because my buddy Donna Lynn Champlin was playing the Annie Golden role.  BUT. . .with low expectation, I truly loved what happened on that stage, with very minor complaints (mostly concerning McNally's book).  Donna played Vicki with a way over-the-top Buffalo accent, appropriately, she herself is from upstate New York, and her energy level was to die for.  Sally Struthers worked the stage, and the full house audience to maximum effect as Jeanette.  The guys were very, very good - and I mean this as a compliment - the were all average Joes:  James Moye, Todd A. Horman, Milton Craig Nealy, Allen E. Read, Jeremy Webb and (I'm sure that DR elmore has run into) Robert Newman of THE GUIDING LIGHT.
Tonight:  the Steelers play. . . not THEATER, they play football!

DR Pogue: I hear you're a big Sherlock Holmes buff. I just started (in earnest) a large collection of the Holmes novels and short stories. Just last night I finished "A Study in Scarlet" and started up on "The Sign of the Four." Literally starting from the beginning. I've also read a couple of the short stories, which have been lots of fun. Any favorites that you recommend?

Might I take a moment to recommend two novels by Mark (TWIN PEAKS) Frost?
THE LIST OF SEVEN
THE SIX MESSIAHS
They're a load of fun.

Wow! That's good to know!

Unfortunately, I am purging while I pack, so it's really going to be up to the two of us, I'm afraid. I am thinking about hiring someone to clean the house after we're out. I've never hired anyone to do that because we have so much stuff it would be impossible for someone else to clean, but this should be easy. I will have to be unpacking at that time and can't be in two places at once.

And then there's work...

TOD - Earlier this summer I celebrated the 40th anniversary of my first trip to NYC - June, 1967.  It was the summer between my junior and senior years in high school and my mother worked at a Detroit bank with a woman whose brother had some connection to Lotte Lenya.  We had Lenya's house seats to Cabaret (original cast) for my very first ever Broadway show.  My favorite keepsake of the trip is the souvenir program book autographed by 4 of the 5 principals (we didn't recognize Jill Haworth until she was halfway down the block and called back, "G'night, darlings!" in her husky voice).

DR Adriana Patti - I was in NYC that same week!  The night it snowed, Steve and I were seeing Urinetown.  -And we had had dinner before the show at Joe Allen with DR Jason.  It had started snowing as we were walking to the theatre, and when we came out of the theatre, Times Square was simply BEAUTIFUL covered in snow.  -One of my favorite nights ever in NYC.

I love it.....does she still wear lots of green...because it sure is HER color!!!

I also happen to see this U of M theatre dance major routine.  They are using the CAMP soundtrack....

Thank you for posting that link, Jrandalmost.  That is one thing I regret from my college theater experience.  We had no musical theater classes of any kind.  Oh we did musicals, but no dance classes of music classes were offered for those interested in muscial theater.

AAAAAnnnnnddddd....

We have a new fence! MARVELOUS MATT just left. The new fence is in and looks great. Unfortunately, it's a inch or so from where the old fence was and now the planter box that I had custom-made to fit that spot no longer fits. Ugh. The joys of renovation. But Matt and I have a couple of ideas; we'll work something out.

I've been enjoying reading all of the stories about your first trips to NY.

I've lived in NY all my life, but I remember my parents taking me on the "tourist loop" when I was very young.  We visited the statute of liberty, the top of the Empire State building, took the circle line cruise; -- things that many NYers never do.  I remember being terribly impressed and awed by the whole thing.  I was maybe 4 or 5.

If I didn't have to wear my battery pack for my microphone, I could die twenty feet off a cliff backwards down a couple of stairs AND fall out of the box when I make my entrance....oh well.
Time to call in your stunt double.

Krumm, yes, but that's Harry, not Cedric.  Look closely, you can see the frames of Harry's glasses.

When was the first time you went to NYC?
March 1969

How old were you?
18

Why did you go?
My friend and co-worker at the college radio station where I worked, and I were going to a College Radio Convention in Washington D.C.  My friend managed to find a way through a travel agency to go to D.C. with a three day stopover in NY, for less than what the college was going to pay for the direct round trip to Washington D.C.  So the flight was free for us.  The ad agency that we worked with in NY put us up in their apaprtment in Greenwich Village.  We stayed in a little second floor walk-up at Bleeker and MacDougal.  Directly around the corner was the Sullivan Theatre, where THE FANTASTICKS was playing.

What impressed you most?
Radio City, Rockefeller Center, The Empire State Building.... All the tourist stuff.  I saw HELLO DOLLY (my first-ever Broadway show), THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW with guests Eddie Fisher and Malcolm McDowell, and THE BOYS IN THE BAND (my first Off-Broadway show and first mostly gay theater audience).

What surprised you most?
The crowds of people, the excitement of Times Square, and the fact that I had my first legal drinking experience drinking beer at YOUR FATHER'S MOUSTACHE.

How did you get there?
United Airlines red-eye flight into JFK.  I think it took almost as long to get into mid-town by cab than it did to fly cross-country.

Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?
The Playbill from HELLO DOLLY with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway on the cover and the souvenir program from the show.

And I shall take the lovely large vase over today.
You'll take the lovely large vase over what today?  There are alternatives?  A sterling silver platter, perhaps?  A crystal goblet?  Plastic hosptial pan?

Welcome back, DR MusicGuy! I spent yesterday moving, too...it's going to take weeks because we're doing it little by little, in stages, as various rooms in the new house get finished. Yesterday I filled my car just with china. Boy...that Portmeirion is some heavy stuff! Today I'm doing wine glasses and more dishes...I hope the glasses make it there in one piece!

Wow, who would have thought that China would fit inside a car!
