As for the Topic of the Day... Well...
I do like French Fries, but I usually opt for Onion Rings if given the choice. The District Chophouse in Washington, DC, has great ones! And I've never been able to finish one of their orders even though I've wanted to. (My apologies for the dangling participle.) And there was a place in Richmond called "The Village" which had great onion rings - they were made in house and not from Sysco. Alas, they eventually switched to the pre-made frozen one, and they were never the same.
Fried Chicken:
Gus's Fried Chicken in Memphis, TN - Their chicken is marinated and then just given a coating of seasoned flour before going into the hot oil. And each order is cooked to order. Soooooo good.
Frenchy's Fried Chicken in Houston, TX - A kind of spicy fried chicken, and more of a batter-dipped type. When I first tried it, I went ahead and got the three-piece combo, and by the time I had finished my food, I found myself wishing I had ordered the four or five-piece combo. It was that good. And the sides were killer too!
Mert's Heart and Soul in Charlotte, NC - Whenever I play the fall SETCs, I always make sure to have at least one meal there. The fried chicken is good and basic. And when you get them served with waffles and maple syrup..

-Mert's also has great fried okra and hush puppies.
Fried Pickles (a.k.a. Frickles) - The first time I had them was at the Duke University Dining Hall. They had a whole "Fried Food Bar" on Fridays... "What are those?" -Fried pickle spears. "Really? OK, I'll try them." -And I continued to try them each time they were on the line. Those were batter dipped spears, but since that first time I've had a couple of different variations. Some places - like the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, TN - fry pickle slices that are basically just coated in season flour. However, Galaxy Diner in Richmond, VA, used to make some incredible dipped-and-breaded ones in-house, but the owners switched to food-service ones after the first year since there kitchen staff could not keep up with the demand. Of course, once they switched to frozen, the orders went down, so... Ah, well. -Spanky's BBQ in Times Square is where I currently get my Frickle Fix.
