Here's another foodie topic.

When you want to make something and want to see a recipe...what is the cookbook that you look at first (other than asking Jose)  ;)

I have a ton of cookbooks, but I always start with Betty Crocker. If that recipe doesn't look interesting, I move on to something else

The "Quick and Easy" ones  .. I'm not much of a cook (DS Case just snickered as DR Jose just gasped) so if it has more than 5 ingredients and more than one SMALL paragraph of directions, I pass...or let DH do it -- he's the cook (and a good one) of the family ...

In line with the salad, how about potato salad recipes
We need two categories:

Regular (Mayo based dressing)

German (Vinegar- bacon fat dressing)

der Brucer

I do remember that my Mother always cooked the potatoes a day ahead (boiled, skinned, then wrapped in paper towels and refrigerated over night - then sliced cold in the next day).

My mother never did that, that I remember, but I did it the last time I made potato salad and she said it was the right way to do it.
I once made German potato salad for our Oktoberfest in Spirit Lake, I used 30 pounds of potatoes!  Let me see if I can find the recipe

Joy of Cooking and then go from there.

I think Woody would start with Fanny Farmer.

For my mayo based dressing I use yellow mustard and a little sweet pickle juice...or cole slaw dressing and mustard (my mother used to use hmm what was it called? It was a sweet and sour dressing that you can't buy any more

Woody and I are planning to go up for the last performance of The Brain.

I presume my best bet for a pair of tickets is to join NYMF Silver and snag a pair.

Good Afternoon!

Gourmet Magazine had a nice "Last Touch" column that covered different types of potato salads a few issues back.

Egg salad should have black olives.

GREEN

Although, actually, I don't like olives - black or green in my egg salad.  However, I will gladly have them on the side.

Those are cool-weather comfort foods.

How about, tuna salad, egg salad, deviled eggs...

I'll start: all of the above should be made with mustard!

Well... I have a ton of cookbooks too, but...

For "basics", "The Joy of Cooking" - whichever edition happens to be handy.  Then I will move on to Mark Bittman's "The Minimalist Cooks Everything".  Then, if I'm feeling particularly curious, I'll check out one of Christopher Kimball's books based on his very detailed - and sometime overly-fussy - Cook's Illustrated approach.

For baking, "The Joy of Cooking"... then "Baking with Julia"... Then Nick Malgieri's cake cookbook.

For Italian - Marcella Hazan and Lidia Biastanich

For Indian - Madhur Jaffrey

Etc., etc., etc.

DR Miss Karen - "Gourmet's Five Ingredients: More Than 175 Easy Recipes for Every Day" cookbook would be a worthy addition to your culinary library.

For possible discussion:

Have you ever gone to see a play or a musical (no movies allowed) where you absolutely hated every minute of it; even though everyone around you seemed to think it was a masterpiece?

I've only had that happen once: JELLY'S LAST JAM.  I've been in the monority about things like XANADU, and Bernadette Peters and Lauren Bacall winning undeserved Tonys for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and WOMAN OF THE YEAR.

I don't think anyone around me thought such dreadful plays and musicals like the following were masterpieces in any way:
  THE NEWS
  RATS IN THE THEATRE
CARRIE has its fans, but they're fixating on recordings not the horror that it was in the theatre.

DR ELmo ~ I'm just joshin' with you about your review -- actually you should do it for a living. Your knowledge and biting wit would make for great reviews.

Yes, where is Juls and her review?

That's okay, DR Miss Karen.  I suspect you love the show for two reasons: your Bookey was involved and you were drunk on your ass at the bar. :-*

In the interest of purging, I am donating 3/4ths of my cookbooks. Most of them were given to me by my mother who loves to try out new recipes, (casserole, mostly) in the hopes that I will one day become domesticated.

So far it hasn't worked.

I will keep the old standbys...Joy of Cooking, Betty Crocker, and any specialty cookbooks, but for anything else, there's always the internet (or DR Jose!).

Epicurious is my fall-back cooking website.

I was wondering if you would! Well, Der B and Miss K in the same place...I'm glad I'll be there to witness it!

Where will we find a place to have dinner before the show? Can we make reservations at John's Pizza for, oh, say...30?
