In any case...

My parents finally made it back from the stores - where they didn't buy anything(!?!?!?!?) - a little after 5:00 yesterday, and a little after that, we all jumped into the van and headed down I-95 to Richmond.  Thankfully and surprisingly, there was no traffic.  Not even at the big outlet mall.  Whew!

We made good time heading back down to Richmond, and pulled into my parents' driveway a little before 7:00.  And since the dinner reservation that Steve had made was for 8:00, well, I hurried around a bit and got ready to head over to his place so that we could head to the restaurant.

As I was heading out the door, Steve called me and asked me where I was, and I told him I was on my way over.  Once I got to his place, he informed me that he had shifted the reservation another half-hour - whew! - and that he wanted to walk to the restaurant - What?!?!

-Normally, I don't mind walking, but since I had not packed any "warm clothes", and since the temps had dipped quite a bit last night, well... After borrowing a scarf and gloves from Steve, we walked across the James River to Morton's.

The dinner at Morton's was excellent.  The dining room was far from full, but it appeared that only three servers plus the Maitre D' were the only ones taking care of the room.  The service wasn't slow, but I could tell that they were juggling tables and doing a couple of hand-offs here and there to make sure everyone had a pleasant dining experience.

This was Steve's first time at Morton's - and at a high-end steakhouse.  He had a received a gift card from work, so he decided to treat me to dinner.  :)  We didn't bother with salads since we knew we were going to get dessert, but we did go ahead and get some Creamed Spinach and Hash Browns to go with our steaks - a Double-Cut Filet Mignon for Steve, and a New York Strip for myself.  All quite good.  And the table bread - and Egg-Onion Loaf was totally addictive - the generous loaf made the perfect appetizer.

As for dessert, we had ordered the Lemon Soufflé at the start of our meal, and it was delivered to our table fresh out of the oven a few minutes after our dinner plates had been cleaned.  My compliments to the kitchen on the timing.  It was a very good soufflé, and the choice of Lemon was a good one since it helped to balance out some of the more decadent choices earlier in the evening.

Then after we had finished our coffees and fetched our coats, we walked back to Steve's place... With our leftovers in hand.  :)

And in the small world department... I asked our waiter, Jason, what his "day job" was, and he said he was a student at VCU - which is my alma mater too.  I mentioned that I was back down for a few days from New York City, since my parents had retired down here from Fairfax a couple of months ago.  Well, it turns out that he also grew up in Fairfax, and we had actually gone to the same grade school, St. Thomas More - albeit ten years apart.  Then the backserver who was clearing the other table behind us, spoke up and said that he had also grown up in NoVA, and had gone to one of the neighboring high schools too.

DR elmore - Thanks for your e-mail.  And, yes, I believe that's who we were talking about.

-Oh, and thanks for your voicemail on Thanksgiving Day.  I went right to bed as soon as I got my brother's house that morning, so I didn't listen to it until Friday morning actually. ;)

As for "Weight Watchers" - You can actually do it online now.  They even hold virtual meetings.  I'm not doing it right now, but I know many other who are.  And the virtual meetings are also a convenient way to check in if you're not able to make your "in-person" meeting that week.

In any case...

I'm about to head back over to Steve's.  He has some shopping to do today - as do I now that I think of it.  And then we'll be heading to his sister's house tonight for yet another Thanksgiving gathering.  I'm looking forward to seeing his clan again, especially his mother since her health issues seem to be resolving themselves quite nicely recently.  She's even playing piano again apparently!  We may also catch a movie this afternoon if time and craziness permits.

Thanks for the tip on the new Holmes books, DR td. Are they as good as Nicholas Meyer's two wonderful books?

They are unique, as is their author.
