Well, yikies! I forgot to log off yesterday -- so I've been lurking for hours and hours without even knowing I was lurking -- that's what I call some gratuitous lurking....

You mean they've colorized ruined this cinematic classic?

Yep, but the original black and white version is also there so nothing has been ruined.

I meant to mention that on that new DVD, there is both a repurposed 5.1 track and the original mono, too. So you have lots of choices if you buy this release.

Good morning!

Cold, just the way January should be. Still, cloudless blue skies couldn't make for a more perfect mid-January morning.

I agree with some of the aforementioned musicals gone wrong on film:

And maybe it's just me, but I can't stand the film version of A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, but love it the times I've seen it staged -- there was a lot of bad casting in that movie and I didn't like the way a lot of the characters were played.

My viewing for the day will be decided by what comes in the mail. If it brings me the five Criterion discs I'm expecting, I'll start with THIS SPORTING LIFE. If not, I'll have to begin HAWAII FIVE-O and put it aside once those Criterion movies come. I guess I'm a snob, but those Criterion classics will get my first attention if I had a choice, even though James MacArthur is pretty wonderful to watch at this stage of his life.

So many stage musicals have been ruined by their film versions. I agree with almost every one that's been posted here: BYE BYE BIRDIE, MAME, FORUM, A CHORUS LINE, ANNIE.

I'll add GUYS AND DOLLS which does have the Michael Kidd choreography and Vivian Blaine, but while Jean Simmons is tolerable, I'd throw out both Brando and Sinatra, reinstate the cut songs and get rid of the new ones.

TV REminder:

AMERICAN IDOL begins the weeks of audition rounds tonight (2 hours tonight and tomorrow night). I will not begin watching the show this year until the Hollywood round begins. I simply don't have the hours each week to look and laugh at the clueless who think they can sing or the wisely untalented who only want to appear on TV hoping for a few minutes of glory (or in the case of someone like William Hung, is still talked about.)

New episodes of NCIS, BOSTON LEGAL, and LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT.

I adore the movie of CABARET, but I wish someone would mount a TV version of either the original material or of the revised version, both of which are different in many ways from the film and are both equally memorable.

I don't like any film version of a Broadway musical that leaves out half the score.

Oh, and welcome back to DR Edi -- you were missed (and that from someone who is most E and T -- see, even I even picked up on the fact that you had been missing in action). Give "Oh Crap" a hug for me.

He would say that even if there were many more pages of posts. The number would change, but the sentiment would be the same.

Good morning, everyone.

I'm up and around these days, but still fighting the remains of the flu. I am NOT caught up on the posts, so I have no idea what people are talking about--shush, Bruce.

Must run some errands.

Hope to rejoin you all at some point.

And the word of the day is: NEOTERIC!
An anagram for NEOTERIC is ERECTION.

I'm not even going to try putting that in a sentence!   :o

I've never seen the 1930s version of ANYTHING GOES (TOPS IS THE LIMIT). I know it's not as far a departure from the original as the abysmal 1956 Crosby/O'Connor version is, but is the 1930s version anything like the Broadway version?

I concur with Matt on GUYS AND DOLLS, esp on Sinatra. I knew the show from the Bluth Bros production and was aghast when I saw the film.

While Mame certainly ranks as one of the biggest misfires, for me, I think the movie version of Bye Bye Birdie stinks to high heaven. What a mess. Between the miscasting,...
Huh?

I don't argue with the changes in storyline being off, but which characters do you think were miscast?  Certainly not Dick Van Dyke!

I guess it helps to know something of Broadway musicals, and their translation to Hollywood musicals...

...before being re-worked into Bollywood material.   ;)

Nope, can't quite see this as a musical.
