Noel - I was thinking about the part of your post yesterday where you wrote, about the HAIRSPRAY material itself:

"What remains are the convoluted story, which switches racial prejudice for anti-fat prejudice as if they're on an equal plain, and those songs, which are frequently witless, pointless, or just uninventive."

We've seen countless examples of critics loving a show and the public never takes to it; or shows the critics loathed running forever.

...listen to Amour or A Year With Frog and Toad, 2 scores that lost the Tony, that year, to one of the cast albums that I can't bear to play, Hairspray.

I think, ultimately, we need to add "local theatre" longevity to the "success" equation - I suspect "A Year With Frog and Toad" will be playing somewhere in the USA long after "Hairspray" is a faint memory.

Oh, I know a question that I want bk to use as the TOD sometime -- How did each of us come to be on this here site? I know my story is a six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon type deal -- Cason, bk, The Brain and DR ELmo ....

Oh, and don't forget:  today is National Nothing Day.

This un-event was created by newspaperman Harold Pullman Coffin. It was first observed in 1973. The goal of National Nothing Day is "to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything."

Checking in. The war at home continues and no word from the exterminators.  Vacuuming the mattress, I found a dead bug, so that means yesterday's spraying did something.

Re NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, the coen's rather faithfully rendered Cormac McCarthy's novel, so a lot of the story issues being mentioned today are the novelist's, who would have needed a less faithful adaptor to resolve them for you.

I just spent twenty minutes on the phone with a market research person; her final question was "If you could choose one famous person to spend an hour with, whom would it be?"

So, what was your answer?

Noel - i agree that the attention to craft in A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD and AMOUR (two shows that i very very very much enjoyed) is better than the attention to craft in HAIRSPRAY.  But theater may have moved on from craft above all else - as we're seeing with the near-unanimity of the critical reaction to a show like SPRING AWAKENING.  This is not you by any means, but there have always been those who hold on to the standards of an old craft and resist a new craft standard that comes along - modern poetry (rhymes vs. non-rhymes and changing rules for scanning) is an example as well.  And of course let's not forget invention, honesty, appropriateness of tone to the story, raising of spirits and pure joy.

Then maybe this is one of those cases where it works best as a book and does not translate well in the limitations of film .. I'm just saying ....hey, plenty of critics and viewers have loved it so one man's (or woman's) head scratching is another man's cinematic and literary masterpiece ...

...ahh, and their faithful rendering explains why there wasn't the Cohen trademark black humor that appears at the core of so many of their films ...

singdaw - No more so than each person's brain being wired differently, I hope.  :)  We all have things that matter to us, or don't matter to us, and people that we truly adore and admire (personally and professionally) but still get our hackles up by some of the things they say.

For example, I'm sure you're looking for a picture of Cornelius Hackel to illustrate "getting our hackles up," aren't you?

BTW, before i leave that post, there is no unanimity to the idea that LITTLE MERMAID is "bad."  There may be a majority of the overnight reviews, but there were enough positive reviews so that one can say that its "overnight" reception was better than, say,  that of the stage BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

And that's the report from WOCD radio for now.
