And as for last night's festivities...

Here I am with the wonderful Michelle Brourman. We only met each a few summers ago when I was called up to New York Stage & Film to assist with the rehearsals for their still-in-development musical, Dangerous Beauty. -It will be getting a full production this summer in Chicago at Northwestern University. Michelle became fast friends and colleagues; we both seem to have the same musical sensibilities and outlook. We've kept in touch sporadically since then, but last night was the first time we had seen each other since that summer, and even though we had missed each other in the interim, it truly was like we no time had passed at all too.

*Last night was also the first time I heard Michelle play something other than her "Renaissance Music" - a.k.a. the songs from Dangerous Beauty - and I was sort of surprised at how well she swung - pretty decent jazz chops. -And her arrangement of Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin" was a stunner. I may have to steal it!

And here I am with the equally wonderful Amanda McBroom. The first time I had heard her sing live was when Jacques Brel and Lies & Legends were running in repertory at the Pasadena Playhouse... almost 20(!) years ago. I was out there for a week or two visiting a friend, and he just happened to have tickets... And last night was just the second time I had heard Amanda sing live. Hopefully, it will be not be another 20 years till the next time.

I've always admired Amanda's voice on record, but what really caught my eye - and brain - last night was her acting. She truly inhabited each song she sang from the fluffy "I Want To Be Round" (an ode to good eating ;-)) to the tragedy of Brel's "Marieke". And she scaled it all down perfectly to the size of the room.

Amanda's husband, George Ball - who was also in Brel and Lies in Pasadena - was also in attendance last night. Alas, no photos of the very happy and talented couple.

And now, with an assist from David Zippel, here are the three us together. -And if you're wondering - or just being snarky ;-) - Yes, I did have a cocktail - just one! - with my Coconut Pineapple Cake (they only serve desserts at The Metropolitan Room). However, I also found myself tearing up a few times throughout the evening... Especially after Amanda's introduction to "The Rose...

She dedicated it to a group of "boys and girls" who are currently somewhere in the hills of Afghanistan. There happen to be a small group of cabaret fans over there, and they've been corresponding with Amanda via e-mail for the past couple of months - whenever they have enough "free time" to do so, and when they're out of immediate danger. During one of their latest communiques, they sent her a picture of a desert flower, a desert rose they came across while traversing the dusty, hot terrain... It was truly a powerful moment and rendition.

I think that GONE, BABY, GONE was a terrific picture and that Amy Ryan should have won the Oscar.

Yes, some of the dialogue was muffled, which is a shame, but I find that in a lot of movies these days.

On the other hand:

Last night, I finally saw JUNO and, although it was mildly entertaining and Ellen Page is quite good, I do not think it was worthy of all the raves it has received. It is definitely no LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE.

I think that LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD and even GONE, BABY, GONE were more worthy of a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

And, the Best Original Screenplay statuette SHOULD have gone to MICHAEL CLAYTON.

I was watching season 3 of SLINGS & ARROWS last night. I've come to really love that show! Such fine writing!

Well... Part of me wants to head up to the bodega, get a copy of the New York Times, and spend the rest of the afternoon reading it. Another part of me wants to get out into the sunshine again today since I'm going to be in rehearsal studios - some without windows! - this whole week. In the meantime, I have a load of laundry in the dryer, and I made a pot off coffee to enjoy with my Doughnut Plant doughnuts. Sooooo good!
