I think I know what Mamie's "method" was.

DR Laura, you have completely cracked me up twice today.  Thank you.  "Tim Rice" is priceless.

Oy--I just got two (count 'em), two boxes of screeners to review, including the latest Bette Davis set, some historical BBC boxed set on Admiral Nelson, Season 1 of Father Knows Best, some big Mariah Carey boxed concert set, etc.  Plus they just emailed me I'm getting a 7 DVD set of a BBC series called Private Life of Masterpieces.  I really just want to watch some Cholly Chan.

Well, I'm glad someone went there!  :P

Enjoyed it. But boy does it need a transfer with anamorphic enhancement. The aliasing trying to watch this from TCM was just distracting.

Wha....?

I'm going to look up "anamorphic" later, but for the time being, what do you mean by "aliasing" exactly?

I actually did burn THE SATAN BUG to DVD a year or so ago, but I can't remember if it was made from cable TV or what. Like about 200 other movies in my collection, I still haven't watched it. I was always interested because I like Ed Asner.

DR JMK:

You got all that great stuff, and you know what was in that UPS delivery I saw this morning? I thought it was the Blu-ray of COYOTE UGLY. Nope

It was a BET reality show about students trying to win some sort of college admissions game. Ugh!

A full afternoon of viewing for me.

I began with THE SATAN BUG. Very entertaining little thriller. Very 60s. George Maharis at the zenith of his looks. What a surprising cast: Richard Basehart, Anne Francis, Ed Asner, Dana Andrews, many others.

Enjoyed it. But boy does it need a transfer with anamorphic enhancement. The aliasing trying to watch this from TCM was just distracting.

There is a DVD with anamorphic enhancement - just not in region 1.

Aliasing is the series of distracting wavy lines you get on NTSC broadcasts when tight line structures like venitian blinds and the grilles on the fronts of cars are photographed. Our TVs have a hard time dealing with such lines, so you get all these distracting jagged lines and waves as the camera pans by.

The aliasing on THE SATAN BUG today was the worst I've seen in a long time. A DVD that is anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs increases the scan lines and ups the resolution so that aliasing is more controlled. Still doesn't completely eliminate it if the bitrate of the transfer is low, but it still improves it.

On high definition broadcasts and HD discs, aliasing is almost completely eliminated.

I NEVER kid about the difference between a "soundtrack" and a "cast recording."

Since it's a United Artists film, I'm thinking a domestic MGM release would probably be poor. Still, I'll think about burning my own DVD-R of the movie. I didn't erase it from the DVR after I watched.

Thanks for explaining. I don't think I've ever noticed this exact problem, but now that you mention it, I probably will. Thanks! :)

The things that bother me most about watching television are:

1. Ugly, distracting logos and promos on the screen DURING TV shows. Death is too good for the person who made that happen.

2. The fact that commercials are much louder than the regular programming.

3. End-show credits that are miniaturized and/or horizontally scaled as to be unreadable to make way for promotional content.

I have a few computer items I need to tidy up. Then, I'll head back down to continue with Harry Potter and then on to something else. I may not do THE DEPARTED until tomorrow night. Again, we'll see.

Yes. At least the disc doesn't come out until April 15th. I can put it off for awhile, next week most likely.

Hmm, this L.A. girl is from:

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio."

I lived in Pennsylvania, granted the Philly side, and I highly disagree that the Midland folks don't have an accent. ;D

In truth, I grew up in L.A., with an English accent which I lost over the years.

I saw The New Century last night. It's a group of 4 plays written by Paul Rudnick. The show is at the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre in Lincoln Center.

I did have fun though and do recommend the piece. I don't know how well it will do but the Newhouse is a nice, intimate theatre and the price was right (TDF $26) so I'm not complaining too much.

My mom and her partner have been together for about 17 years, I think. Even though they have never married, his kids think of us as their family and refer to us as step-sibs and my mom as their step-mom. I really like that, and so I may now start referring to Naz as my step-father.

So, anyway, to add further to the drama, my step-father's mom passed away on Monday. She doesn't live in town and I've never met her (she's from Lebanon but has lived out west with her grandchildren for quite some time). She was 95, so that was a good, long life. But she fell and broke her hip, had surgery, went into a coma and that was the end.

He seems to be coping well with the news...I haven't talked to his kids about it yet.

Edi, I am very sorry to hear about your double loss in recent days; and please please please forgive me for this.....  In fact I blame Jose and yesterday's T.O.D.  When I was reading about your step-father's mother you wrote that you had never met her and she was from Lebanon; but I thouht you wrote she was a lesbian.  ROTFLMAO!  Please forgive me.
