DR Ben did not share any details of the clan gathering yesterday in NJ.

I wonder if it was a much fun as DR JoseSPiano with the cowboys?

I just watched the first episode of "Mad Men," in AMC's season one marathon.  So far...it's just not grabbing me. :-\ I'll watch the second episode and see how I feel about it after that.

We watched the first three episodes and returned the second disc to NetFlix without watching it.

I have decided to stop watching "Mad Men."  For those of you who love it, that's great!  I'm happy for you!  But I'm just not interested in it, any more.

DR Jane - out British cousins eat more sweets (candy) that Australians do.  American candy is however VERY sweet!

The British are more used to  "Cadbury" (The less sweet Australian version!) and the smoothness of Belgian chocolate).

BUT it is still an interesting experience!

A shame that you never got to the truly interesting revelations about the real identity of Don Draper and who the person calling himself Don Draper really was/is. I think it was episode five where his real-life brother made an appearance. I was in tears by the end of the episode, my favorite one during the entire first season.

I'm finished writing now and will head back down, first to clean my bathroom and then head back into the den to see what disc two of HIGH AND LOW has to offer.

"The Fly" is indeed an OPERA.

Of course the HELP lines would have been quite appropriate in TV's "Hercules" too.  Twenty minutes was more than enough!

Well, I'll watch this episode and just skip episodes 3 and 4.  Maybe I'll like it after that. :)

How very pleasing to see a post from DR TCB (Not that I bothered to read it but it gave me something to ignore).

Isn't this the wedding that motivated you to get in shape?

Then, I watched Akira Kurosawa's HIGH AND LOW. I'd never seen it before.

In a word, masterpiece. A 143-minute crime drama-procedural that's so riveting I lost all track of time, and it was over before I knew it.

And the transfer is just superb. With lots of tight knit lines that on lesser encodes would be aliasing all over the place, there wasn't a second of line twitter.

Why can't all movies be this good?

Glad to see someone finally catching up with the movie I've probably written about more than any other on this here site, simply because I watch it at least three times a year.  I've proclaimed this Kurosawa's best film and a masterpiece since the day I first saw it, sometime back in the mid-70s.

The various DVD incarnations are fascinating - Criterion's original DVD was misframed at about 2:1.  Then I got the official Japanese DVD (without subtitles) which was obviously a much better transfer, but at a 2:55 ratio, which, for 1962 isn't really correct.  Then I got an Australian DVD which is almost as thin as Ben-Hur - now there is more information on the sides of those transfers, but it's miniscule - and I think this new Criterion is probably correct at 2:35, which is what theaters showed scope in in the 60s.  The Australian DVD was the only one to have the Perspecta stereo track, but I'm happy to say the Criterion does as well.  I'll be getting it first thing Tuesday.

Tomovoz, Thank you for the suggestion.  I'm not sure I can find fresh pumpkin in August.  I also prefer meringue pumpkin pie to the traditional heavy style.

Make it from canned pumpkin, Jane, so they see how Americans eat pumpkin pie.

And the word of the day is: ASPERSE!
I do not suffer from any form of PARESES, and demand that you not ASPERSE my reputation in such a manner!

(Sure works better than a sentence using the anagram SERAPE.)

Past my bedtime it is.  Tonight,  I watched Merian C. Cooper's "The Last Days of Pompeii", an interesting film from 1935 filled with great scenery, some incredible spectacle for its time, and a volcanic eruption finale that destroys Pompeii.  Oops!  I hope I didn't give away too much about what happens.

Not a problem for me...I watched the episode of "Doctor Who" where they went back in time to Pompeii when the volcano blew.

I have spent fourteen hours over the last couple of days wrangling carts.  That's fourteen hours more out in the sun than I usually spend in an entire month.  And it has been very very very humid and very very very hot.  (That's a total of six verys.  Or is that supposed to be veries?  I'm having trouble with my plurals.)

I am red.

I am tired.

I am achey.

And, to top everything off, when I took my shoes yesterday, I discovered that I'd somehow developed a blister on the top of my left foot.  About a square inch of skin just kind of peeled off and I looked down at it and said to myself "how the heck did that happ....YEOUCHHHHH!!!!!"

 :P

I am looking forward to staying indoors and scorekeeping tomorrow.

DR TOMovOZ said yesterday that the opera version of THE FLY opened in France....wonder how things went....do you think THE FLY has legs?
Or did the critics pluck them off?

I got quite a lot done this morning and early afternoon. Then I ate some lunch. And then I lay down on my bed. Then 2 hours later I woke up. Then I realized that I missed JMK's Bosa Nova band at the Salem Art Fair.

Sorry JMK....I had meant to go and see that show  :-\
